Yes Nigeria has never been a major beneficiary of the Canadian PR system . Coming here you’ll think many people from Nigeria are migrating but it has been an average of about 400 ITAs per month with a good number of applicants applying from within Canada. My guess is this:
The Asians have a very strong support system in USA, Canada , U.K. , Kenya and South Africa such that they tend to facilitate migration and share opportunities among

Personally once I see you fit into express entry criteria, I take it upon Myself to tell people, “oh have you heard of express entry”

I work as a State Govt primary school teacher. Please when filling my application Post-ITA, should I put as Government or Employment under activity type? I am asking because Lagos State Government is boldly written on my work place's letterhead. Thank you.

@bold hits harder, @ednut1 you are 100% right with that assertion. An average Nigerian will not even help even though he owns the whole company in Ontario... we see ourselves more as competitors which still play down to the poverty mentality. its well.

I don’t believe the Chinese and Indians always had money. This culture of theirs over the years is what has brought generational wealth their way.

In Lagos the Indians patronise each other. Grocery shopping from Indian stores , dinner from Indian restaurants and many more.

During the lockdown members of the Indian keralite tribe came together and chartered an aircraft ( Nigerian airline) and also lobbied their embassy to facilitate a landing permit for the Nigerian airline which evacuated them to their hometown (kerala).

On my part I was added to a whatsapp group trying to get a flight back home and it was one confusion upon another with no level of consistency and some members of the group even vowing not to entrust their money with any Nigerian airline . To my amazement I saw Nigerians basically begging British airways to accept them (not for free). Plans eventually failed and we ended up relying on the high commission.

This is an example of how we differ from the Asians. No collective interest in any form .

All the same things will get better

Good job brother. Don’t relent or be discouraged . I saw the attitude of Nigerians first hand when I lived in Upper marlboro area of Maryland as a student. It was all about competing over who owned the best clothing, who partied the most and other frivolous activities.
On Saturday a friend mentioned BCS to me and how he could earn 33 points if he passed it. Between then and now I’ve mentioned it to about 5 people who I feel may be interested or may stand a chance. I may not have POF to offer them but it’s my own little way of contributing

You have a valid point. I was bent on going through the study route since I'd get a study leave + few benefits from work. Not after i weighed the costs involved in a study route and my budget, I realised I was chasing shadows. I calmly returned to EE route.

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that Nigerians are rich. Overall, the standard of living is very poor in Nigeria and Nigerians are generally not as rich as many other nationalities in the world. Certainly not as rich as indians or chinese people. The average middle-income earner in Nigeria earns less than $600 a month or maybe around $7000 annually, and that's even stretching it. One can't compare that to what the middle class in China earns. And it's the middle class in Nigeria who make it to Canada using express entry. So, Nigerians who arrive in Canada come with way less money than other nationalities.
And of course, that's including the fact that Nigeria itself is a poor nation, resources notwithstanding. The country's budget is a pittance compared to the budget of smaller states in the United States or of cities in China. Most of us in Nigeria grow up being told that we are rich and the politicians are just stealing everything. On the contrary, if the politicians stop stealing today, it will still take Nigeria many, many years to get out of its poverty rot. The country is simply too big and resources too inadequate to go around.

There are lots of Nigerian setup groups and associations helping each other for free. I am a part of these groups. One is called NIPCA, check out website and LinkedIn. They have helped a lot of Nigerians get training in IT related areas like Salesforece, servicenow certificates and partnered with tech companies to help members secure jobs. We run trainings and help each other out with projects and challenges in workplace. Another WhatsApp group, GTAgroup, very helpful for people who just landed in ontario. Nigerians are more cooperative than you give credit for. This group on nairaland started with people's journeys and experience shared freely and we have all benefited.

Hmmm. Interestingly, having lived across West Africa, the perception is that Nigerians help each other: You see a lone Nigerian today, the following year he has brought members of his family. If he starts a business, you can bet he'll go get his brothers to help run it.

You articulated my thoughts perfectly. I don't know where people get the idea that anyone is competing. If people are competing, this thread or the living in canada thread will not exist. We need to have a mental shift and stop imagining things that aren't necessarily true.

Decision to Travel: I made up my mind to travel after an uncle of mine reminded me about express entry in June last year, before then, I felt its a difficult process so I didn't really bother my self about it

IELTS: registered for the exam in June 2019 but missed it because it clashed with my NNPC interview. Imagine me o, I choose NNPC over IELTS, in the end the job sef no click. I later registered for the exam in November and passed it once. L8.9 R9.0 S7.5 W7.0. Did the exams with BC and used youtube and Cambridge materials for preparation.

ECA: I did my ECA with WES, I evaluated both my bachelors and masters degree. It took me about 3 months to get it done. thank God say ASUU and NASU never start their wahala

Express Entry: I jumped into the pool with a CRS score of 478 in march 2020. All thanks to the delay in conducting draws (which I’m thankful for) I got invited In August 06 after missing the first July draw due to tie breaking rule.

Work experience: I used my NYSC (10 months) and my current work experience (2 years and 3 months as at submission). I went to my PPA to collect reference only for them to claim that I only worked for only 10 months. Had it not for the long delay in conducting draws I would not have had some more months in my current job to make up for it. So if I had gotten ITA in March or April I would have probably had to reject it. I used two NOCs to make up for my three years. I attached all the NYSC documents such as my reference letter, posting letter, acceptance letter. I didn’t attach my discharge certificate though. I also attached payslips and reference letter from my current work experience too

POF: that was easy, got a gift deed from my dad and notarized it for 3k in a notary public

Medical, PCC and passport were a breeze

POST-ITA: After filling all the documents and submitting my profile, I thought the wait would be very long. From time to time I anxiously checked my profile to see if there’s any update. I later realized last month that WES made a mistake in the year of graduation of my bachelor’s degree, I became tensed. I sent a mail and FAX to WES and within one week, it was corrected and I sent it via webform to IRCC. I also decided to ask the status of my application by calling IRCC. mehn, I called tire over 300 times in a day. On some days I will speak to the agent, and their system will either be down or credit will finish during the call. Finally I was able to reach them and was told my file was moved to ACCRA. I was really scared, especially because I was using NYSC as part of work experience to claim points and the NYSC was clearly and boldly written in my reference letter. I ordered GCMS notes two weeks ago but alas, I never need it. PPR came it just this morning.


Glory to God for what he has done and Thanks to the seniors in the house @mamaroon, ednut1, crespo67 (for creating that wonderful whatapp group). Finally thanks to this thread for the wealth of information that has helped me in this process. I read this thread almost every two hours. See y'all in CANADA

Nigerians can be very cooperative and uncooperative too at the same time and I’ll like to believe this exists in every ethnicity all over the world. I’m on a certain group where a group of lawyers took it upon themselves to help others with their licensing process and the whole process can be slightly costly, most especially buying materials to read for the exams and these ladies and gentlemen shared notes they purchased with over $1k to those struggling and couldn’t afford it on the group but guess what ? Some Nigerians went to inform the writers of the books and you know how big a thing copy right can be abroad . These people were even being threatened from being barred by the law society abroad just on top help to people they don’t even know from no where . But this hasn’t deterred them from helping but they’ve stopped sharing notes , now you use your money to buy notes yourself.
