Drug trafficking is considered a grave offence in the world, and as such measures are put in place to curb the act. The question is "Do you feel this is a pertinent situation in the country?" or the government is still struggling to curb the menace.
In Nigeria, there are agencies for this purpose; they include The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency was established by Decree Number 48 of 1989 to eliminate the growing, processing, manufacturing, selling, exporting, and trafficking of hard drugs, while the latter was established in 1993 under the country's health and safety law to checkmate illicit and counterfeit products.
The duties of NAFDAC and NDLEA are different but at the same time quite related in terms of uniting Nigerians and working towards the improvement of Nigerian lives as well as fighting against illegal activities that impact the lives of the people and the country's economy.
Also, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) controls the entry and exit of people in the country in all recognized gateways. More so, NIS issue travel documents to bonafide Nigerians home and abroad. The Nigeria Immigration service also issues residence permits to foreigners in Nigeria.
In recent times, some agencies seem to be performing the same role as stated above. The Nigeria Police Force, for instance, is seen arresting and punishing offenders who are involved in drug trafficking. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have also engaged in arresting and prosecuting offenders of this same crime.
This duplication of function by these agencies has aroused a lot of controversy and confusion among the Nigerian citizenry.
To resolve this issue, proper and continuous training of personnel should be incorporated in the orientation programme conducted in these agencies to foster cohesiveness and effectively reduce abuse of power.
