THE Presidency yesterday described as “totally false, malicious and repugnant”, a report that President Goodluck Jonathan has voted N2.9 billion in order to capture the votes of the South-West geo-political zone.
The report is a “product of the mischief-driven imagination of its authors,” according to the Presidency, which stressed that on the contrary, Jonathan has been on a tour of all the states and the six geo-political zones to meet the people and sell his “agenda of transformation” to them.
President Jonathan “urges all political parties and interest groups to put the unity and well-being of the nation above sectional, group or individual interests and avoid doing irreparable damage to hallowed national institutions through falsehood and political skullduggery.”
Defence Minister, Adetokunbo Kayode, spoke in the same vein, describing as “wicked, untrue and totally baseless,” allegations that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has earmarked N2.9 billion “to capture” the South-West political zone in the coming elections.
“Such insinuations can only come from perverted minds.”
Speaking in Akure, the Ondo State capital yesterday where he came to prepare the grounds for the PDP presidential campaign scheduled to hold on Wednesday, the former Labour and Justice minister said the allegations were merely campaign of calumny against the ruling party by those who knew that the party was going to win in the zone.
The Presidency’s statement, signed by Presidential Spokesman, Ima Niboro, said Jonathan has shown “by word and action” that he is committed to free, fair and credible elections and that he is convinced that the meet-the-voter-campaign tours is working, going by the “tumultuous crowds” that have attended the rallies “and the increasing endorsements of the ticket by other political parties, royal fathers and interest groups.”
On its part, the Edo State government has denied a news report (not in The Guardian) yesterday with a headline, “Power show: Jonathan locks Oshiomhole out of Benin,” saying “the Governor was not locked out of the state as the story tried to portray.”
A statement by Peter Okhiria, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, added: “The issue of VIP movement is an age-long routine and it was clearly not target at the person of Governor Adams Oshiomhole. The incident was a normal security routine and we cannot query the judgment of the security agencies charged with the responsibility.”
In the meantime, the Alliance for Democracy (AD) rose from its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the weekend with a resolution to support the presidential aspiration of Jonathan and his deputy, Namadi Sambo.
The AD’s National Chairman, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, while addressing the meeting in Abuja said that unlike some politicians, Jonathan had remained a symbol of humility, and transparent leadership.
According to him, while it is a fact that Nigeria’s political landscape is populated by ‘bad opportunistic wealth-seeking political adventurists,’ whose primary purpose is seeking public office for wealth and family aggrandisement, the life of Jonathan has been that of humility.
He added: “We in the resurgent AD are proud to be identified as followers of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and respecters of his legacies. If Awolowo were to be alive today, not as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he would have no hesitation endorsing the Jonathan/Sambo ticket because of all founding fathers of our nation, he was the only one who identified and promoted the cause of the nation’s ethnic minorities for a fair and equitable deal within the Nigerian polity.
“The Jonathan/Sambo ticket is seen as a fulfilment of this age-long vision and a fulfilment of the struggle and we as Awoists disciples, see it as crowning jewel on Awolowo’s earliest crusades.  
Thus in supporting the Jonathan ticket, we are not just supporting the man Jonathan, we are supporting a cause, a cause to which Awolowo devoted most of his political life; a cause that is now symbolised by the candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan.”
And, a former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Bola Tinubu, has “wished the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its media allies well in their campaign by demonisation.”
But he warned that only solid and clear-cut programmes, not demonising political opponents by purveying falsehood, win elections.
[b]A statement by Olakunle Abimbola, his Chief Press Secretary, quoted Tinubu as saying: “If the PDP and its media allies feel the demonisation of Bola Tinubu would save them from the electoral hiding to come from the South-West and other parts of the country, they are entitled to their costly delusions.”
Reacting to a newspaper story (not in The Guardian) at the weekend, which claimed that the Federal Government was filing a charge against him for alleged breach of code of conduct when he was governor, Tinubu said the authorities were free to press charges if they had any proof.
But he warned that “if all the noise was still on the so-called foreign accounts, then the government was embarking on a 12-year blind alley, at the end of which they would have found it a waste of time.”
“I have said it before and I will say it again: if they have any evidence, let them go ahead and prosecute.  The so-called case is an object of cheap blackmail, from which nothing would come.  In any case, let us meet in court, if they have any case,” Tinubu stated.
He stressed that the alleged sale of some five houses in the United States, purportedly belonging to him, “added new comic to the blackmail and demonisation game.
“For 12 years, they have bandied around allegations about the so-called foreign accounts, with absolutely no shred of evidence.  Now, they are adding comical sales of non-existent houses.  It is election time, of course!” he remarked.
Tinubu said: “The PDP should keep on distracting themselves with these old wives’ tales,” adding: “By the time they are buried without trace after the April election, they would wake up to find it is too late.”[/b]
