Kanu Asks Fg To Absorb Biafran Scientists by AljUche: 12:45am On Mar 09, 2011 |
By Japhet Alakam The Federal Government has been urged to absorb Biafran scientists who produced the technological and scientific innovations that sustained their efforts during the thirty months civil war, despite the adverse conditions which they operated. The submission was made by Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, former military governor of old Imo and Lagos States and member of the Supreme Military Council, during the presentation of a new book, Scientific and Technological Innovations in Biafra, The Ogbunigwe Fame 1967-1970, written by one of the brains behind the feat, Dr. Felix Oragwu, in Lagos. According to retired Navy officer, the loss of Biafra robbed Africa of what would have been a world power technologically, economically and politically. He said: “It is most unfortunate that Nigeria could not imbibe and absorb any lesson from the scientific and technological innovations in Biafra. “That is why 50 years after, along with the underpinning problems of faulty foundational structure, the country can hardly generate electricity or refine crude oil.” Speaking on the state of the nation, Kanu, who chaired the August occasion, bemoaned Nigeria’s leaders for failure to learn from the lessons of the war. He said: “It is also unfortunate that Nigeria in real terms, did not learn anything from the war itself.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/03/kanu-asks-fg-to-absorb-biafran-scientists/ |

Nigerian leadership have been HUGE FAT FOOLS otherwise, they should have done that a LOOOONNNNNGGG time ago! Should any SANE country need advise on using it's talent wherever they may be? Wasn't this the same thing that the ol' USA did with "Operation Paper Clip" as soon as it overcame the Germans in World War II? If you have never read about this very important operation that was the spring board for a lot of the innovation in the USA, you should do it ASAP! |

50 years is a long time. . .Gowon and subsequent regimes failed to help Nigeria scientifically after d war due to fear and ethnicity and the wartime experience was not passed on to younger generation. . .most of the actors are already dust, so who will be absorbed? their grandchildren?. let them rest in peace. Currently, Biafran children are a product of Nigerian educational system which we all know has collapsed. |

It's unfortunate that we have been having leaderships that don't give a hoot about technological innovations. These Biafran scientist should have been assembled after the war and the government tap from their experience. It's unfortunate that quite a good number of them are late. This brings to my mind Late Engr.Roy Umenyi, former deputy governor of old Anambra state, who was one of these great scientists. |

Re: Kanu Asks Fg To Absorb Biafran Scientists by PeeDaVinci: 12:32pm On Mar 09, 2011 |
ibsorb "ghosts" in this case, the problem is not about biafran or fulani scientists but focussed, purposeful and willing leadership which is able to impact a shared/common vision to nigerians. it was business as usual in eastern nigeria until they found a leader which is guiding them towards a cause -"becoming a new republic" |

Granted most of them are already dead anyway, what exotic knowledge did they possess that this generation doesnt. their inventions were the result of necessity. let the government embrace and utilize the current generation instead of wasting time with old senile scientists(apologies). We would be better served by creating a sense of urgency to motivate the current generation to invent and innovate rather than refight old tribal conflicts all day on Nairaland. |

Many of those scientists moved to Europe where their talents are appreciated. Gabon, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Tanzania should be the ones absorbing them after all they contributed towards advancing the Biafran cause. Should they even bother coming back to Nigeria or getting absorbed? Hell NO. Not for a government and nation that sponsored genocides against their people. The main thing Nigeria needs to gain from Biafra experience na lesson but since Nigerians have proven that they are not ready for that those scientists should not contribute a dime. Help em make shyt that will use in future against us? Hell no. |
Re: Kanu Asks Fg To Absorb Biafran Scientists by debosky(m): 3:57pm On Mar 09, 2011 |
How come the 'Biafra scientists' have not been utilised by the South Eastern states till date? Last I checked, the war ended a long time ago and the SE receives allocations monthly that it can use as it deems fit. Let them turn the SE around first before getting carried away. |

It is sad that tribal and religious sentiments did not allow the country to make use of their talents after the war. I remember the efforts of General Ogbemudia who tried to collect the manuscripts from the Biafran scientists and replicate the American tactics of using German scientists after WW II to achieve great inventions. His boss then, General Bisala collected most of the manuscripts and set it ablaze with a rider, that this is what those fools used in prolonging the war. Unfortunately Gen Bisala was executed for the murder of Gen Murtala who incidentaly led the massacre of a generation of young men in Asaba during the civil war. We can only move forward when we start removing tribal and religious sentiment from our system, thats why PDP stands the best chance of winning the next presidential election because it is a party with the best national spread, others are either regional or ethnically based and the opposition is struggling to come together with Maigaskia in the North and Asiwaju in the SouthWest holding strongly to their power bases. |

Guyman02: When ACN fix the SW, do not flock in as if you all do not have villages (generally speaking). Most of you are ones that will not vote for ACN and still be one of the first people to enjoy what they have done in the states they control. Infact, most of you stay in the same SW OR NORTH. While your PDP eats you all up. Oh, I wish there is migartion control in the North and SW. Hypocrites! Always voting to mediocrity!!! |

Guyman02: More fool him. . . . @ Gen. Ogbemudia. What does he expect Bisalla- a latent enemy to do with such valuable documents? He ought to have kept them in a safe place until he can pass them on to a credible fellow indigene to utilise for the benefit of their people. So with all the moneybags in igboland, he couldn't find anyone to entrust the documents to but Gen Bisalla. shooooorrrr!!! |

jason123: @ Bolded, GBOSA!!! When Awo was initiating free education in the western region, these are the same people who were taunting him but no sooner had he got the scheme up and running and they were all over yorubaland like locusts, singing "One Nigeria" and in the process helping themselves to free education that their own "nationalist" father couldn't afford them. But mention Awo's name now and these people and their descendants will start foaming in the mouth like rabid dogs, calling the man all sort of names, conveniently forgeting that their fathers/mothers/uncles/aunties benefitted from the man's policies whilst he held sway in the western region. |

jason123: Yes keep wishing, I am also wishing to be the next President of Nigeria and Bleep Beyonce on the regular. You want one Nigeria when it only benefits you and your people. And if I may ask you where do you currently live? |
Re: Kanu Asks Fg To Absorb Biafran Scientists by T9ksy(m): 7:15pm On Mar 09, 2011 |
yarodin: And you only wants ONE nigeria when it doesn't benefit your ilk, huh. Keep deluding yourself. No one wants One nigeria except your people. Its a fact that neither the west nor the north believed in "united nigeria" whilst the east were all for it UNTIL . . . . . . . . And now they sing "one nigeria" whilst still nurturing their dream of the "Land of the rising sun". When they want to marginalise others in their fathers land, they claim one nigeria and the next minute (when it suits their purpose) they claim "Biafra". |

I know that this will generate ethnic sentiment, and that is why we find it difficult to make progress especially when it comes in-terms of healing old wounds. This is not about Biafra, it is about our country, Nigeria. If we must be the giant we all crave for, we must go for technological know-how, no matter where it found even in the hands of so called enemies. However, for some who have little knowledge about the Biafran's ammunitions and technology, just take a visit to National War Museum Umuahia, like they say, "Neccesity is the mother of invention", you will be appaled by the ingenuity deplayed by the Biafran's Scientist and Engineers, considering the adverse conditions within which they operated. Notable among them are the famous Ogbunigwe (weapon of mass distruction), Armoured tank named Red Devil, hand grenades, guns etc. These technologies should have been sustained and improved upon by the Nigerian goverment, certainly not Biafra anymore or even the Easten state goverment. Today, Aba is a shadow of its old self due to negligence and lack of support by the goverment. This is a city nicknamed Japan of Africa, noted for their infamous production of Substandard goods known as Aba-Made. Taiwan started that way as well as china, we can see where they are today. |
