Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has petitioned the State Security Service, SSS, alleging a bid by Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN to use members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to rig next month’s election.

The party’s publicity secretary, Isiaka Danmairomo said yesterday in Ilorin that the alleged plan could threaten free and fair elections.

The PDP’s petition entitled “Inducement of corps members by ACPN to perpetrate electoral malpractice”, were sent to the state Electoral Commissioner, Timothy Ibitoye

But the ACPN spokesman, Abdullahi Oganija, described the allegation as spurious, urging the PDP to stop “using diversionary measures to cover its expected defeat during the April polls”.

The development came as about 200 PDP members in Asa Local Council defected to the ACPN. They were received at Ballah by the ACPN’s national chairman, Dr. Olusola Saraki, during a campaign tour.

It would be recalled that Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana, had earlier written police authorities demanding the arrest of alleged PDP thugs who demolished the billboards of opposition politicians in Kwara, particularly those of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN governorship candidate, Muhammed Dele Belgore, on the eve of President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to the state.

Falana claimed in a letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) that the thugs demolished the billboards and unleashed violence on the community at the behest of some government officials and bigwigs of the ruling party. .

Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of Democratic Peoples’ Party, DPP in the state, Gbenga Olawepo, has told the people it was time for change, saying the PDP, which had held sway in Kwara in the past eight years, had not made any significant difference in their standard of life.

Addressing a crowd of supporters when he launched his campaign at the party’s secretariat around Sango Market, Ilorin, he said the wind of change blowing across North Africa with the recent developments in Tunisia, Egypt and the battle against dictatorship still raging in Libya, couldn’t elude Kwara State. He stressed that it was time for the people to be liberated.

Olawepo promised to create 4,000 jobs during his four years in office if elected and called on his supporters to cast their votes for the candidates who would pursue their interest and asked them to defend their votes.

Olawepo, a former students’ union activist and founding deputy national publicity secretary of PDP, questioned the credentials of some governorship candidates in the race, saying “Those now wielding brooms around should be asked about their pedigree. Where were they when we began the struggle?”

He also took a swipe at the ACPN governorship candidate in the state, Senator Ruqqayat Gbemi Saraki, asking her to wait for her turn.
