My guy went to meet his uncle in NNPC to help him with a job, uncle say make my guy go learn tailoring after bachelors and masters haba. What's the essence of going to school then? This entrepreneurship isn't for everybody, there are professional courses we study it because we wanted to practise such profession.

You are among the few who got my point. If I most attend a University or polytechnic as the case may be, the programme should be relevant to the profession I want to practice. There is BSc in Textiles, HND in Fashion Design etc. How can I become Chartered and you will be telling me to be making small chops? You should have told me before enrolling in the programme.

ICAN trained you in accounting, financial management, performance management, etc. You should be able to leverage what you learned in those courses to make a successful entrepreneur. You need to get it, it's better to be an entrepreneur than an employee
ICAN told you the truth. If you don't get it now, 20 years down the line you will and then it might be too late for you
ICAN trained you and you should leverage on it to make a successful entrepreneur by establishing your own accounting and financial management firm.
How many exams did Igbo business men passed?

People are still trying to get admission and also write these exams. Ican is not in charge of industrialization or creating enabling environment for businesses.

They (not ICAN) should create incentives for these people to look elsewhere and embrace entrepreneurship. And guide them to get relevant training in Vocational institutes instead of trying to gain admission just to get an irrelevant degree and useless charters.
We need to refocus.

Is so obvious they just want your dues and don't care about the profession, is not just your association but telling chartered accountants to go into fashion or baking is uncalled for.

Each day, I read new OKOTO MEOW'D posts. For goodness sake, everyone cannot be an entrepreneur! Nowhere in the world are there are more entrepreneurs than employees. So, where did you sniff out the statement that "it is better to be an entrepreneur than an employee"? With all the preaching regarding entrepreneurship, what is Nigeria's unemployment rate? Poverty rate? I security rate? GDP growth rate? GDP per capita? C'mon! Did you people not study economics in secondary schools? What sort of ridiculous posts do I read daily?

In other parts of the world, no one postulates to accountants to be entrepreneurs or even MBA grads to start a business because the nitty-gritties for entrepreneurship differs greatly from just being an accountant. But only in Nigeria do I read posts from seemingly educated people that everyone should go into entrepreneurship. BTW, what are the businesses constituting these entrepreneurship? Baking? Bead making? Soap production? Barbing? Sewing? Mushroom private schools? Fish ponds?

Damn! angry

Let me drop this:

Legionx:

The average Nigerian lacks the common sense to understand the way the economy works

if you like learn all the skills in the world as long as the Nigerian economy is not promoting new businesses or startups no skill can save your business from crumbling.

Without favorable government policies there is no skill you can learn to move forward.

what we should be asking is what can we do to improve the standard of education in Nigeria so that the courses that people study can have an impact

the poor man teaches his children to study in universities so that they can get a certificate and then get a job and live a comfortable life

We don't go to school just to study and get the certificate.

we go there so that we can learn a course and then use what we have learnt to improve the economy that is why school was created

so if you guys keep running around learning skills how will the economy improve when the people that are supposed to get the intelligent ideas to change things are shying away from scoring high points in school.

if you think enterpreneurship will save Nigeria then you have learnt nothing from 2014 with all their enterpreneurship programs when recession came you saw how many people committed suicide. you all have come together and start bringing the solutions ourselves.

we can't expect the government to do anything impressive when we made the wrong decision by voting the wrong people.

You can never expect a goat to act like a lion, lead like a lion and protect like lion because it a goat is a goat. So when you bought the wrong leaders you can never expect them to improve the economy and lead like great leaders when you keep collecting bribes to vote the wrong people.. you can never expect them to act in the right way. Right now we have to come together and start looking for ways to improve the economy and improve the educational system because no skill you learn today will not be affected by the economy.

whatever skill you learn the dollar to naira rate will increase, the price of your goods make buying things unfavorable and many more things that you don't want experience.

Nigerians believe the country will be rich and become a major economy via sewing and baking of cakes. embarassed

The word 'entrepreneur' ehn.. e don suffer.

Tell a Bsc graduate about entrepreneurship, I could tolerate that. But a professional programme like ICAN? ICAN should rank alongside the NSE for engineers, Law school or medical. Imagine any of the bodies preaching entrepreneurship to their members. People did this programme through their nose, only to hear that entrepreneurship sermon? Anybody can be an entrepreneur, but coming from this body is very very unfortunate.

P.S entrepreneurship is a good thing.

They are telling you the truth and you are still feeling entitled..if the generations before you had created businesses then there would be demand for the services of a chartered accountant ..Remember only a successful business can afford to keep a chartered accountant to man it's books especially in these days where small businesses can use quickbook applications to manage their books without any help of an accountant
but ican told him he has to be chartered to be able to practice now they are telling him to throway the ican certificate and go and hustle, is it fair?

We focus too much on certificates and credentials while encouraging ourselves to embrace entrepreneurship.

Why should I train to become a chartered accountant just to end up as an entrepreneur?

Why should I go through the stress of passing an accounting exam that is meant to equip me with skills to perform a specialised task, but instead end up producing/selling electric cars, Android apps, liquid soap, small chops, waist beads, human hair and makeup?

Why should I pay annual dues to ICAN or any of these professional bodies, when infact my aim is to own a garment factory or become a fashion designer at least?

What happened to vocational and technical schools? We should be encouraged to attend these institutes If they wanted us to become any of the above.
We have lost focus and we should stop deceiving ourselves. They should just close the Universities and stop awarding BSc.

I reserve my comment.
ICAN, just like universities don't promise automatic jobs upon graduation.
ICAN is a professional exam mainly for practicing Accountants.
Due to some reasons, we apply for jobs within our regions instead of whole country.
Nothing bad in becoming an entrepreneur as plan B, while you hunt for your career job.
It may take 1 to 5 years to land your dream job with desired salary scale.

there are way many even living above the life you are living but that's not the point I am making. Why put people through stress and the end of the day give them a caveat that they should be self employed? After all they have bscs, why collect extra money in the name of being chartered? Why not allow them to pursue entrepreneurship?

I know accountants that managed average salary in small firms, while trying to get chartered. Those that went straight for ICAN without practicing cannot settle for low pay and little or no work experience will be a disadvantage.

ICAN and BSc certificates don't guarantee jobs.
However, have a plan B, while you pursue your dream job.
A times, it's good to gain experience with low paying firms than wait till eternity.
