What of those studying sociology ?
What can one do with the course sociology.

What made you (assuming you are asking for yourself) choose sociology as your course of study?

Thanks a lot. I guess I'll remove UK from my plans and focus on Canada.

Please can you be more detailed with the financial opportunities in numbers - potential earnings.

Entering into the UK is so much easier than Canada. The last time I tried Canada, they said I have no travel history after gaining admission into University of Regina.

The process of coming to Canada through schooling also takes almost a year, even skilled FedEx entry takes that long too. Maybe I'll try with the tourist visa too.

Yes, but you will get a Permanent Residence in Canada with the Express Entry from day one while it will take you 4-7 years to get its UK equivalent, Indefinite Leave.

Let me give you examples of earnings between the UK and Canada.

In the UK, qualified teachers earn between £27,000-34, 000. In Ontario, Canada, they earn $CAD 90-110, 000.

Nurses in Canada earn about two-three times more than their UK counterparts.

Doctors in many places in Canada earn over $350,000. In the UK, it’s less than £70,000.

New Lecturers in the UK earn £30-45,000. Starting rank for their counterparts in Canada is Assistant Professor and they start with $95,000-125,000 depending on the field or area of specialism.

Of course, these are median rates and salaries, and the £ is stronger than the CAD$. Both pay different taxes.

The most important thing is that it takes some time to settle into these societies depending on who is mentoring or guiding you.

Some of these jobs may require you to get licensed and will the process will depend on your dedication and how fast you can push.

Accountants who come to Canada from Nigeria can start AML Analyst and Business Analyst roles pending when they are licensed to go for full accounting jobs. These roles pay anywhere between $50-95,000, depending on your experience and who is guiding you.

In my years in the UK, many Naija UK graduates and students were happy working in ASDA, Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s, doing security jobs, carer e.t.c. These include MSC, LLM and PhD holders from great UK universities.

Since, I came to Canada. I have watched tens of Nigerians come from banks and the streets in many local places in Naija to start bank jobs...I am yet to see ANY except those just coming in today and refugee claimants do the jobs that Naija people in the UK do and celebrate.

is Geography degree relevance in Canada and UK?

Any course is relevant and can take you anywhere in Canada, depending on your vision, your mentor and your hunger. In the UK, Naija education and experience mean nothing to them.

Most art degrees are pretty much useless when compared to STEM courses. They don't produce anything that brings money or jobs.

This is me being honest here.

Your roadside mechanic in a better position than your arts degree.

studying law in Nigeria is not worth it. I am a lawyer and I have been jobless. I attached myself to a chamber, and for 2 days we didn't see a single client. Even when you attach yourself too a chamber in town, you will be paid a very low salary. Lawyers also twist the truth to favour them. Do you know that when applying or looking for a job in Nigeria as a lawyer, you will hardly see llb or b.l needed, all you will see is bsc,b.eng, ond, nceand nd. I am currently looking for federal Government job. I don't want to regret studying law.

I'm in the science field but I've known Law to be a useless course since I was in the University. Most times I laugh when I see them finishing at law school. In my mind I'd be like "Unemployment awaits these people". I'm not trying to be a bad person but it's the hard truth.

Bro, I'm surprised you said they don't even ask for LLB, BL. That's sad. I noticed most Law Chambers ain't ready to pay good money. I know much about law stuff because I have many friends in law and also during my NYSC back then I met a guy that had First Class in law at Law school. He's a big guy now, he served in Udo Udoma Chambers. I think he's still there.

The best way to enjoy law is by having First Class or 2.1 in Law school. The truth is your Class of degree in the University doesn't count at all. The law school grade is the deal.

I think some Art and commercial field are also making waves. Especially the management field. Human resources, social works, accounting (auditors and the likes).
Social works was even listed under the UK Job shortage list.
But stem courses has more advantage but if you studied any of the above courses there are still Countries looking for you

”Art courses are useless” is a Nairaland consensus unfounded in reality. Is it not the same Nairaland which believes nursing is a useless course despite it taking many citizens out of the country while securing them immediate employment? Follow these children’s recommendations at your risk.

I have a friend who studied banking and finance in Nigeria, has a masters from England, worked for a reputable Nigerian bank for over six years and is now a marketer based in Canada. If he came here for advice, Nairalanders without a means to eat tomorrow would advice him to dump any belief of securing a job if he isn’t in the medical or engineering field.

Yes, I know about FedEx PR on entry, the UK requirements are crazy.

Yes, but I still did the conversions and the average is approximately twice what UK professionals earn. I'm coming as an entrepreneur not to be a professional but I still want to have a high paying job - it mustn't be from a professional job, while I build my business. A friend started doing call centre job almost immediately after entering Canada with FedEx. I'm more of an entrepreneur.

About PhD holders doing security jobs in the UK, that is sad but it is way better than almost anything Nigeria has to offer.

Your point is very clear and well taken. Canada has better job opportunities than UK on average and I believe it applys to entrepreneurship too. Canada also shares border with USA, the second biggest market in the world. The opportunities are endless.

I will focus on getting into Canada through tourism. I know I should be able to survive better there than UK. I'll UK too though and I need to leave this country.

I am just laying the cards bare for you as I will do for a brother or sister. I did those jobs in the UK from LLB to a PhD. Security jobs with Rossi and Systematic in Knightsbridge(Versace, Gucci), banks, council houses and Westfield. I even worked at many food outlets at the Emirates and Wembley stadia...Porter job at the Queen’s palace and hospitals. They paid well and I won’t look down of them.

Just saying Canada ensures that most PRs from Nigeria get jobs that are a thousand times better than what UK offer.

I didn’t address your entrepreneurial plans because you are not coming in as one as it will require anywhere from $500k-1m to come in COMFORTABLY under any of the programs in that line. I am not wrong to say you don’t have that.

You have to come in through one of the routes I mentioned. Those are your choices and opportunities.

...Good luck.

Look, virtually any degree has value abroad. The reason you hear so many stories that contradict that is many people are lazy. They don't want to do what it takes to get their degree honored abroad and work in their sector. There's also the fact that some people are able to have a better lifestyle abroad doing a trade or low skill job than they had in their profession.

Also, some people just find that they've had to work so hard to establish themselves that they don't want to do even more labor to work in their sector. It becomes too much and they simply find something else, like nursing.

Or you enroll on a new IT/Computer Science degree and start afresh if you have the time and resources...tho when you through...you will still have to go for short courses...

If you are good you don't need to get to start afresh you just need experience and certification within the industry

You cannot use Nigerian law to work in Britain. British law is different. Japanese law is different. Every country's law is different. You only use law in the country you learnt the law.

Japan and China do tend to like English teachers. The rest countries, don't give any F*** about English. They program their internet, keyboards, phone, books and all media in their language.

You can only practice law in the country you studied it.
I know one Nigerian guy that went to UK to study law, following them to speak big English.
When it came time for work, nobody will employ him. Because no white man will like a black Nigerian to be his lawyer in their own country again.
No way.
Hunger wan kill guy man.
And the law is useless in Nigeria.
The guy now got idea to be helping fellow Nigerians and Africans with Visa immigration problem. Since it's only black people that will like to use his service. The black people will not like to go to White lawyer. The white lawyer will not even defend them sef. He too will want them to lose and get out of his country.
another illiterate.. na only u dey know doctor and lawyers..
a Nigerian lawyer can practice in all common law countries.. including the big nations like UK,Canada, Australia, The US etc..all he just need is to pass the qualifying exams..
and I know at least 2 Nigerian lawyers practising in US..

Yes, i agree it would be easier because you have years of experience.

The only problem is that if you have been a boss already, you might need to start by climbing the corporate ladder over again. Which means all the dues you paid earlier was all for nothing.

Unless they hire you as a specialist ie: Senior Auditor.
