The French probably played some role in his capture. You would be a fool to think otherwise.

Sometimes I wonder about my African brethren.

I see your point and i know where you are going with it and i'm with you on it. But we have not yet heard the true story yet, so let's wait and see. But i'm glad the animal was captured. I mean what is it with African leaders?? Don't they know the glory in doing your time and leaving with grace? Where do they want to die in office?

It would be best if you can get any book on the Ivory coast written between 1997-2000 before this conflict started. You know truth suffers in war time.

CNN) -- The self-declared president of the Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo, was arrested Monday, the French Embassy in that country said.

Security forces of the Ivory Coast arrested him, the embassy said.

A Gbagbo adviser, Ahoua Don Mello, said earlier that the French military had stormed Gbagbo's residence.

Gbagbo's refusal to cede power triggered a political crisis in the West African nation.

Is that image for real??

People should not comment on issues they know nothing about. The Ivory Coast suffers from regional and sectarian conflicts just like Nigeria. Read about the history of the Ivory Coast and you will see a North vs. South dichotomy.

This is the problem with the colonial made borders of African countries.
I agree with you on this.Arresting Gbagbo will not solve the problem on ground .

Can you reference one you read that stated this explicitly. If my memory serves me well. THe Ivorite was introduced by Henri Bedie against immigrants and northerns who were of mixed identity Alassane Quattara being a prime example of a non indigene.

What political sense would it make for him to initiate such a concept knowing his own origins. Doesn't make a squatt of sense.
Re: Breaking News: Gbagbo Arrested. by tunnytox(m): 3:25pm On Apr 11, 2011
The French are liars so I'll never believe them. Gbagbo's arrest is not the end of this political impasse in Ivory Coast, under the Ivorian constitution without Gbagbo handing over the power legitimately to Quatarra his presidency will not be deemed legitimate. Also the fact that Quatarra make use of foreign fighters will make his government even more prone to several political hiccups from opposition. And please don't forget that Quatarra can not rule as a dictator there are members of the legislature who has been duly elected from both Gbagbo and Quatarra's political parties. Let's wait and see as this drama unfolds

If you had been following the Ivory Coast crisis on a daily basis, you would recall that Quatara's first act was to appoint Soro his deputy and that Soro is the public face of the 'rebels' who have now been co-opted into the new Republican force wchich includes militias and deserters from Gbagbo's army. And that they will be the bulk on Ivory Coast's new army.
Guy if you have been following CIV since 2000 you would know that after Gbagbo was sworn in Quattara made a promise to make the country ungovernable for him. In 2002 a rebel movement led by Soro started in the north backed and armed by France and logistically supported by Campore(Burkina Faso). The rebels openly said that their leader was Quattara and they would not be peace in CIV until Quattara rules,
See go search for Quattara policies and Economic decision then you would see why the French will kill for him, Nuff said

What a shame it had to end like this,

To think this is the same Gbagbo who earned his stripes taking on despotic Houphouet-Boigny, in whose government Quattara served as prime-minister?
Irony of ironies - this one embarassed

Easy on the conjectures, superbrother! I have been following the Ivory Coast since before the time you mentioned and I know differently from the above. Like morpheus24 I will greatly appreciate one reference on your earlier assertion about Quatarra being the originator of Ivorite, something I am currently unaware of.

guys, lets get our facts right. Gbagbo has been captured, yes bt he is under d custody of d UN. He's been taken 2 a certain golf hotel where Ouatarra's forces surround bt d UN has said that he is under their(UN) protection. It means evn though he might have been captured, no one can touch him, 4 now.

The above has nothing to do with The concept of IVORITE in terms of who started it. Quattara and soro mutinied because of the very concept introduced by the South against the north. Again the southerners did not know how to handle the inclusion of the multi ethnic make up introduced into their country psot 80's and started staring up ethnic tensions which are evident in today's politics, France or no France.

I hope this is the case. I will be quite irresponsible to hand him over to the Republican forces, which is not yet truly a disciplined national army.

France is really waxing their waning muscle. I can understand why they can in Ivory Coast, but Libya's really non of their business. I hope there's peace in Ivory Coast after this. I really hope there is.

Africa still remains a western colony till date. Quite a shame.

I am bit confused  - I saw this picture some times last week.

anyway from bbc

Mr Bamba says the arrest of Mr Gbagbo was carried out "swiftly and professionally" by forces loyal to Mr Ouattara. "The nightmare is over for the people of Ivory Coast, there is much celebration. He is now being held in a safe place for the next steps to put him on trial."

Fact is a lot of Northerners are truly Burkinabe or Mixed, and a lot of northerners are closer ethnically to Burkinabe than to the south.
That is why a sensible voice like Thabo Mbeki way back in 2005/6 told the UN to trash out the nationality issue before holding any elections or it might lead to civil war, especially if the Rebels were not disarmed. As we have seen what he said have proved prophetic. Lets remember also that it was Gbagbo that gave Quattara back his CIV citizenship in 2000. Ultimately all these guys are just pawn in a resource war.

He is not of Polish descent. The man is of Hungarian descent. However, I do agree with your assertion. Remember that Napoleon wasn't even French. He was from the island of Corsica.

Quintessential change-merchant - here
Laurent Gbagbo was born into a Catholic family near Gagnoa, in the cocoa-growing central-west of the country, nearly 60 years ago.

"Cicero", as he was nicknamed because of his taste for Latin during his school days, has a PhD in history.

Some say Mr Gbagbo's wife, Simone, is the real power behind the throne
Beginning his career as a university lecturer, Mr Gbagbo was jailed for two years in 1971 for "subversive" teaching. His nom de guerre was "little brother".

In the 1980s he was involved in trade union activity among academics.

He was one of the first to challenge Ivory Coast's founding President Houphouet-Boigny in the 1980s - as soon as the long-serving independence leader permitted multi-party politics.

In 1982 he sought exile in Paris, returning six years later to attend the founding congress of the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI).

His time as an opposition leader led to spells in jail and brushes with the authorities.

His wife, Simone, is a powerful politician in her own right and some see her as the real hardline power behind the throne, preventing her husband from giving up power.

Archetypal African Strongman - here: starts off well before the slow and irreversible unpacking of megalomaniac tendencies ensues sad sad sad
But while he was in power, most news broadcasts highlighted Mr Gbagbo's daily activities.
He has a reputation for being short-tempered, in particular against "arrogant" journalists,
