DENMARK HAS SUSPENDED use of AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine as it investigates reports that some people receiving the shot later developed blood clots.

The Danish Medicines Agency said on Thursday that use of the vaccine will be suspended as "a precautionary principle" after there were reports that people who received the vaccine developed severe cases of blood clots.

"We do not yet know whether the blood clots and the Danish death are due to the vaccine, but it must now be thoroughly examined for safety," unit manager Tanja Erichsen from the Danish Medicines Agency said.

The use of a specific batch of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine has also been paused in six other European countries pending investigations, the agency said.

All appointments in Denmark to receive AstraZeneca's vaccine have been canceled and people who have already received the first dose and are awaiting their second dose "will have to wait with this for the time being."

The country released a new vaccination plan in which AstraZeneca's vaccine is completely removed "to illustrate a worst-case scenario." With the change, the ministry says everyone in Denmark who is 16 years and older could be vaccinated by July, 16 weeks later than if the AstraZeneca vaccine could be used.
