To get a gun in a country like Nigeria easily, is just through illegal means. But, if you want to be the good citizen that you are, you have to be legal.

Illegally:: You pay Fulani herders to smuggle it in for you. grin
Buy the ones carried around by them or pay cult groups to get one for you.

Legally:: You go get your papers ready. You wont get it free, you'll have to spend some good months driving back and forth on the already damned roads to make sure that everything is complete.

Economic importance::

1). You're most likely to use it for protection.
2). If you have kids, then you know what to do and how risky owning a gun can be. Especially around all this ota akara and ajekpako kids.
3). You end up killing someone by mistake.

And so on and so forth.

It is quite risky.

NIGERIANS AND GUNS are two different words that should never meet.

I remember serving in the cub military then, we had a very tight base.
We were known as machines and winds. Owing a gun then was very easy cause, the commander will be the one to sign all undertakings.

You had to be fast in every format and you definitely won't be wandering about without a B&T VP9 at least.

It was called a shitty test, anyone can pull up on you at anytime "wink
Are you an assassin??

I'm a simple guy. No time for the world's drama.

I don't buy violence when no one offers it for sale.

I have seen a lot of big men with pump action rifles especially at funerals and I would ask myself 'do these people have licences for these guns ?'. Individuals shouldn't be allowed to own pump action guns.

Nothing like a pump action rifle. You may mean a pump action shotgun, which is likely among the acceptable guns since it is closer to a hunting gun.

Getting my license was the easiest part. Please do not be confused with my first sentence. When I say easiest part I meant it was easier than getting the firearm itself. Took me several months to actually get proper documentation. After getting my license I realized there was virtually no shop you could just walk into with your license to purchase a gun. After months of inquiries, and countless offer of old rusted relics I was able to purchase a banelli m4 through a link from one of the police stations in Abuja.

The whole process took almost 10 months. This was a few years ago. I don't know how hard/possible it is to get a licence now. Guns yes i know because still use the link for maintenance. Due to not having no option in terms of repairs and servicing. Gun ownership and maintenance is a bit on the high side.

Other licensed gun owners what's your experience

Thanks for sharing. How much did you pay for the M4?

I advise everyone reading this thread to try to get a gun for your own protection... the feeling is priceless and you feel like after God you have powers to defend yourself... I was walking on an empty road with my gf to cross to a nearby ATM while our car was parked across early this January and some guys came, 4 of them ... haggard looking and stinking of weed smell.. saying: “oga find your guys something or e go bad this night for you and your fine babe”.. my girl was not scared one bit she was just looking at me smiling and waiting for my reaction... I was busy withdrawing from the ATM after I finished i turned back and noticed they surrounded our passage... I just pulled out my English pistol from my holster (image is attached below if you don’t know what’s it is) and I talked very calmly: “who wan test my bullet first?” Immediately they all took to their heels... young boys aged of 19-25 ... the oldest one of them was walk-in backwards saying, “boss calm down no be so... boss ... boss and walked the other way”.... my gf was just laughing and screaming at them “make una come na” .. i inserted my gun back to my holster and drove off.... of course I had a wonderful night with my gf later at home that night...
like a true boss grin ....respect...you for send them back to their creator faster than the speed of wind

The police can not protect us even the army are eager to shoot civilians to death. We need to protect ourselves.

Saiga 12.....I don learn new one. But even that one no reach, when we're talking about one guy against multiple AK-47 bearing bastards.

As for home invasion, I [s]think it is still better to be unarmed at all than to have a stupid shotgun against multiple invaders bearing AK-47s.[/s] You'll most likely display bravado and still be shot dead. Better to engage them with tact/charm and pseudo-surrender than to form shakabula and then get massacred.

But with a very good, very portable, very flexible, very hideable pistol, I think I stand a better chance against home invaders than a big for nothing pump action. So I ask, can I legally acquire a pistol in Nigeria?

Nope! Element of surprise always disarms the greatest bravado! Especially when they are not on a home turf.
In a home invasion, the 1st tin to do is to hit 1of the assailant from a vantage point and then kill the lights!(assuming it's a night invasion) trust me the rest of the team would shoot randomly and exit as soon as possible

In the Nigeria of today: it is better you have it but don't need it; than you need it and don't have it.

Firearms that can be licensed in Nigeria are shotguns (semi-automatic or manual pump actions) or single/double barrelled 12-guage cartridge weapons...basically for the purpose of hunting...NOT self defense.

Ensure to follow and provide all legal requirements; understanding the dos and don'ts...then you're good to go.

Nobody will issue a license for pistols or assault rifles in Nigeria. Those are completely illegal if found on a civilian.

I hope this helps.

If you are a politician... It ain't illegal ooo.... Politicians where dey carry Barretta

Pump action is actually what Nigerian firearm law allows you to purchase after obtaining your firearm licence. Those big men you see likely all have licences to carry them.

Good bless you. I was about to mention it. Nigeria gun liscence does not cover pistol do the OP can still get himself in trouble of he doesn't take care.
I can vividly recall that it only covers pump action

Having a gun is good oh, but something like this Banelli pistol is mostly effective from preventing yourself from being attacked by unarmed or under-armed psychos. You can't really use it in a hot gunfight.

Forget what you watched in John Wick movies.

An average pistol is no longer effective at ranges of more than 50 meters. And even at that, the probability of you missing your shot and wasting all your ammo is very high because of the recoil action.

Baneli Pistol has a good grip, but the recoil of the gun no be here.... Barretta is more better, easy to reload and the recoil is more better hence can handle lot of armed people

Hmm semi automatic. The maintainance required will be higher. Hope no issues with jamming.
Anyway mossberg 500 takes the bacon. Easy maintainance. With machine oil you are good to go.
Note that most folks wount comment because gun licenses were withdrawn by the previous IG (possibly to give Fulani heardsmen advantage).
Till date you cannot renew or get a new license. Infact folks were told to submit their weapons to the police. Most have not done that so codedly keeping their stuff.

Baneli has a gas system that requires little maintenance

Oga, why are you calling it English? That's street slang for imported pistols. You should simply say I pulled out my glock or beretta or browning or some other piece. And pistols are not licensed in Nigeria even before Buhari banned licensing. Its hard to come by except on the streets. So you must either be a political thug, an armed robber or a law enforcement guy.

Pump action is nonsense. You can't use pumpy to challenge bandits armed with Kalash. Besides, it is not handy and flexible enough (to compensate/counter against the advantage of automatic rifles which bandits use).

However, I would like to 'legally' obtain a very small/portable pistol. I find it handier and more flexible, manoeuvreable in combat situations. Is it possible to get a pistol legally?

Yes it's possible to get license for small firearms..... But you must be highly connected to get an approval from IG of police

You must be either a high ranking Politician, A-List Celebrity or Powerful Business Tycoon

There are pump action rifles. I’ve owned both Smith and Wesson as well as Winchester models.
