Dangote’s refinery can produce more petrol than required in Nigeria and still have capacity for exports. Why would a right thinking government spend or waste USD1.5bn on rehabilitating dead refineries when it can use that money to build hospitals or fix roads? What is wrong with this government? 5 Likes 1 Share |

Sonoyom:Some of you just talk for the sake of it. When I've kachikwu made those proposals, which were approved by the FEC, didn't the Senate block it from taking off? Didn't melaye on the senate floor described it as another means to do the shady privatisation of the past? Even when kachikwu came out to say they were not selling the refinery but returning it to the initial people who built it to refurbish it at their own cost after which they will operate it for some years to recoup their money before handing it back to FG,. The senate still blocked it. Go and check the records |

Yankee101: Which is why privatizing NNPC and deregulating....meaning NNPC is no longer reliant on money from subsides .....would make NNPC work for its money and end sabotage there...because a privatized NNPC with a deregulated market, means that sabotage=loss of money. Subsidybad21: Nigeria is a rent seeking milking system set up for the 1%. Privatization is useless. They still spend money on former NEPA/PHCN even after selling it to themselves. And your light bills are much higher. Same Infrastructure, bought with stolen money, lesser power generation, more expensive and subsidized by government (money goes to the so-called investors) Buhari said he had lifted petroleum subsidies, your gas bill went up and they're paying out some of the biggest subsidies ever Ajaokuta steel has been privatized multiples times. Each time the new investor goes in, strips and sells assets and makes more money than was paid, govt takes it back, rinse and repeat 3 Likes 2 Shares |

chaloskyx: Funding for Dangote's refinery comes from 1) Private banks 2) African Development bank 3) 3 billion dollars from Dangote's pocket. As this BBC report from 2014 put it.... Mr Dangote signed a $3.3bn loan deal with local and foreign banks to build the refinery, as well as fertiliser and petrochemical plants. No government funding whatsoever. All government has done is offer to sell crude to him for the refinery in Naira, not dollars. 1 Like |

Yankee101: NEPA problem is simple. It costs N53 to produce one kwh of power. Until recently, that kwh of power was being sold at less than N30. The money being paid or spent of NEPA/PHCN was a 'subsidy' to cover the losses being made in the power sector. A Pricewaterhousecoopers report from 2018(linked here, see page 18) put the fact that the power sector does not charge cost reflective tarrifs as one of the issues affecting the power sector. That plus the fact that 40% of subscribers as at then were not even paying bills...rich, poor, government agencies, private bodies, etc. Even with the increase, the DISCO covering my area sells power at N51 per kwh, meaning a loss of N2 per kwh sold. Same for the petroleum sector. The problem with privatization is simple...we privatized power, and then government came in and started enacting price controls because Nigerians were too poor...meaning power companies cannot earn enough cash or attract investment to fix the power supply. |

Something they know won't yield anything.... What will take them to build a new refinery? No money? Abi Dangote is richer than Nigeria? Like I always say, this administration gets away with a lot of things. |
