What on earth am I talking about?
What can 4000 naira prevent?

That amount, which is slightly less than the cost of a simple first date, can save you from misery and tears in future.

It's simple, if a man and woman like each other, and have decided to either go into a relationship with marriage in view or start having unprotected sex with each other. They owe it to themselves to each go to a government hospital together for a Genotype test before committing further.

The main Genotypes available are AA, which is the ideal Red blood heamoglobin Genotype, AS which is a carrier, the less common AC, SC, and the most painful of all, SS.

A person with genotype SS is referred to commonly as a sickler because most of the time, the person is ill in the hospital for a significant amount of their life. A number of sickle cell sufferers die before their 5th birthday. The rest struggle to adulthood. Being a sickler as an adult comes with its own set of problems that not many people know.

Nobody likes to be sick. Now imagine being sick because of something your parents could have prevented.

If a couple both have AS or AC genotype, every pregnancy owned by the couple has a 25% chance of having a child with Genotype SS or SC. This means that either some or all of thier children might be affected, none at all, or they might become carriers. If gambling with unborn children is your cup of tea, don't mind me, Stop reading here.

Does sickle cell have a cure? Yes, it does.

But this is a classic example where prevention is always better than cure. I will not use medicine to explain it to you, but simple mathematics..

Paul and Paulina are in love and want to marry and have children. They give you the good news and you advice them to go for premarital screening, part of which is genotype.

Let's assume that the cost is 2000 naira per person, for 2 people, the total is 4000 naira. Now with the increasing depreciation of our currency, it will be safe to assume that a simple genotype test costs $10.

The results are out, but unfortunately, both Paul and Paulina are AS. They now have 3 options.
1. Cry about it and call off the relationship, while promising to remain friends.
2. They have invested so much in this relationship. They can still have a happy life together, but they are not willing to take the risk. So they have decided to have a childfree marriage(without children)

3. Take the chance and continue the relationship, seeing where it goes, and hope for the best when children come. (We strongly advise against this)

Many people unknowingly choose the 3rd option.

But DrFunmisticglow, you said there was a cure.
Please be patient !!!

So Paul and Paulina chose option 3 and are expecting a baby, they know there's a chance the child might have the SS genotype, is there anything they can do? Can they know what the Genotype is before the child is born?

Yes. There's a test one can do by collecting a blood sample from the unborn baby in the womb and find out it's genotype, it is usually dome in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. The couple can then choose to abort the pregnancy if the foetus is SS. Only a few big private labs perform this test in the country. The only public place i know is sickle cell foundation opposite LUTH in lagos. As of 2 years ago, the cost of that test was 300 thousand naira. Now factor in the depreciating naira today, it wouldn't be wrong to say that for each child they want to have. Paul and Paulina have to budget about $1000 for this prenatal screening. That is not the same as $10.

The cure for sickle cell is a procedure called a bone marrow transplant. A relative of the child will donate his/ her bone marrow to the child. It has a 90% success rate.It is presently not done in Nigeria or if it is, it is still in the early stages. It has to be done in the first few months of a baby's life.
Many people choose to travel to countries like India, turkey and Rome for this procedure. As of 3 years ago, the cost of the procedure and the six months hospital stay was about 25 million, not including travel expenses and other miscallenous like visa application and so on.
But in our present economy, Budget 30- 55 million naira

How many of us can afford it?

Or they can choose to see their child suffer, while also suufering financially, emotionally, mentally, the stress if it all will eat away at the romantic bonds that they once shared.

I didn't even talk about how it affects the person, because that is a separate thread. We all know someone with this disease.

So I'll ask again.

Couldn't 4000 naira have prevented all this?

Is your love, truly worth this pain?

Know your genotype today?
