Banana island was the brainchild of Late Chief Adebayo Adeleke. The grandfather of Davido. It was hijacked by Babangida after he finished reclaiming the land. This was after Maroko was hijacked from him by Lagos state government.

Good to know.

Actually, as an economic analyst. you'll need to think more like one. First of all, skyscrapers shouldn't be a mark of development. In fact, they're the very reason that property prices in Dubai have crashing for close to ten years. Just simple demand and supply. Cities like Barcelona,London and Paris do not have as much Skyscrapers as Dubai, Shanghai, Newyork and Hong Kong, but who takes in more money in tourism? Multiple skyscrapers are only suited to a business hub. I expected you to complain more about poor house construction and the poor state of infrastructure such as roads.

I'm not asking for skyscrapers. I'm just asking for normal human development. How is it that France and Barcelona, Spain was able to built these dense Urban centers over 200 years ago, while Nigerian cities are still looking like slums despite better technology and higher levels of wealth. It simply doesn't make sense.

First pic is Paris, second pic is Barcelona. Third pic is mainland Lagos. The European cities don't need skyscrapers because they are using every meter of land efficiently.

Re: Banana Island: The Stupidity Of Nigerians by Aconomist: 11:16am On Mar 27, 2021
With the massive housing shortage, you would think these people would built at least 5 stories to accommodate as many people as possible. But they would rather built bungalows. This is basically a largescale village, not a city.

The only Nigerian city outside of Lagos Island and Abuja that has some semblance of humanity is Onitsha. Why isn't this level of density the norm in Nigerian cities?

Wonder why Nigeria is so primitive and slow to develop? Because it is full of Nigerians. Here is an image of Banana island. The colorful skyscrapers are on the part that was developed by Lebanese. The rest of it went to Nigerian developers. See the difference?

The Lebanese built these towers almost 10 years ago. And since then, the Nigerians haven't erected anything taller than 3 stories.
Go and check NCDMB headquarters in Bayelsa before u speak in ignorance. The first 17-storey building constructed by local Engineers with all human & material resources sourced locally.

While you are crying about situations in Nigeria, others are living their dreams. You are a small boy. wink
You mean 1 out 100,000 thousand?
Many dreams killed and destroyed .do you want to talk about it's nimota the frozen food seller, that Nepa successfully killed her business. Or Oride in lagos whose business was killed after investing billions. There are numerous. For one single business that is struggling to stand today, thousands have been destroyed by Nigeria. Even those whom you claim are living their dreams, guy I bet 95% are not legit.if they are properly checked alot of infractions will be uncovered most times not due their fault, but the Nigerian society they find themselves. Nigeria kill dreams. Confirm

what's special at this time and age .We should be talking about Nigerians building structure like those skyscrapers in dubai. With All the expertise,we are shouting over 17 story building. Nigerians are capable to do better,we only allowed over embezzlement to thame us,We are unable to attain our God given potential all because of bad leadership and flawed collective and individual values

I agree. But If you can build 17 stories, you can build 30. The obstacle at that point becomes cost of materials and market demand, which is not under their control. I'm happy to see that domestic companies at least have the skill to erect a modern building with local materials and no expat help. When it comes to super-tall structures like the Burj Khalifa Dubai, I don't expect that any time soon in Nigeria.

Nigeria's over-reliance on expats to do everything is the main thing slowing down our development and leading to massive unemployment. Next we need local companies to build railroads and roads instead of Julius Berger, CCECC, etc. That is when I will know that this is a serious country.

I concur. Imagine spending so much on importing rolling stock for the rail.when they could fix ajaokuta and get all the steel they need for any number of rail lines they want to do. Pounds foolish , penny wise

Why are Africans willing to copy useless things from the west? drug use, fornication, creating bastard children everywhere. But when it comes to copying the good things from the outside world -- like skyscrapers, industry, cleanliness, etc. -- suddenly you are too proud to learn from superior cultures?

Nigeria is at a subhuman level of development. Take it from someone who has traveled the world. You are living like beasts.

The bolded is the major bane of the current societal reality in this country, people tend to give attention to frivolous things copied from the developed countries like entertainment and sport etc that should have only been given attention after getting the basics right;basics like standard education, industrialization, mechanized farming, tech etc.

It's the only way to have a semblance of genuine economic development. For example look at China, Korea and the Asian tigers they ain't reputed for their entertainment or sporting prowess, but for manufacturing and production at industrial capacity.

lt leaves a lot to be desired to know that entertainment,
although an important sector in its own right; is one of the few sectors of the economy that is enjoying some level of growth at the detriment of some other more important sectors like human capital development. That says a lot about the priorities of our people and our policy makers.

The bottom line is that it's only a developed country that can afford the kinda frivolousness that is common in this country.

Abuja looks better. Nairobi looks like a ghetto, but I’m saying this only based on the pictures you posted. You're not that smart or imaginative if your idea of 'Better' is based on High-rise buildings. Reality may be different but the pictures suggest better quality of life in Abuja than Nairobi.

The Abuja pic looks lush and sophisticated while the Nairobi pic looks like an old-fashion, after-colonial-rule, 70’s African city. I do however agree that for the cost, if your figures are right, Abuja should be way better in terms of what it is trying to achieve in its design philosophy..

A sky-scraper sky-line may qualify as spectacular e.g. Dubai city Skyline but I’m not sure majority of people world wide would agree that a Dubai design philosophy is “Better” than a modern city philosophy with ascent on limiting tall buildings while concentrating on green spaces, fountains, and rivers. Besides trying to attain a spectacular reference, sky-scraper skyline may also suggest commerce and not quality of life.

Abuja needs some purple, lilac and white flouring tree breaking up the greens as well as lakes and fountains to complete what it appears Abuja planners are trying to achieve

You call underdevelopment sophistication? Abuja doesn't look like this because they want it that way. There is not enough demand for office space to make the city grow. A tall skyline means a city has strong companies that need huge amounts of office space to employ huge amounts of white collar workers. Abuja central business district (which is zoned for tall buildings) has been largely empty for decades. The only things being built there are government-owned buildings.

Also what is it with Africans and trees? While other races are building unique architecture to beautify their environment, Africans are worried about trees. If you love trees so much, go live in the forest. That's were savages belong.

6 pages later and this Aconomist has blatantly ignored what he's doing to improve development and infrastructure in Nigeria. The sad thing is, he doesn't realize that HE'S the EXACT reason why Nigeria is like this. Idiots who think they're smarter than they are, who don't have the balls, fortitude, and desire to build their own. And would spend the rest of their lives working for white society. He would rather live in the U.S. because he's too fucking lazy to actually contribute to Nigerian society. There's a special place in hell for those who know how a country can be improved, have the ability to do so, REFUSES to do so, and at the same time SHITS on the people there for not getting it done. He exudes what many FAILED black people do, blame every one else instead of shutting the Bleep up and DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Aconomist, do us all a favor and just leave. You're useless in the United States, many other white people can take your place in a heartbeat. And you've chosen to be USELESS to your kinsmen in Nigeria. So you're an overall USELESS person who will come and go without making any significant mark on this world. Your complaints are for your own ego, because if you truly cared, you would be DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Go stroke your ego somewhere else.

Setting aside current environmentalists trends in urban development of which you appear oblivious, evident in your ignorant comment - “what is it with Africans and trees? While other races are building unique architecture to beautify their environment, Africans are worried about trees. If you love trees so much, go live in the forest. Abuja's attempts at a mixed blend of buildings, trees and shrubs is far in advanced of Nairobi’s 70's recently-independent-banana-republic-in-the making-stodgy- high-rise-slum-buildings- architecture picture you posted..

I'm fully aware of environmentalist architectural trends. But that's not what you Africans are talking about. You like trees in the same sense a monkey likes trees ie glorifying underdevelopment and primative living.

The first pic is the Asian ideal of a "green city". The second pic is the African ideal.
