JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER!

If you are twenty-something, your destiny does not have to be tied to Nigeria.

If Obama's dad had not relocated from Kenya to America, he would not have had Obama on U.S. soil, a constitutional requirement to become a president, and Obama would not have changed the world: the first African American to be elected the president of the most powerful country in the world.

Look, this thing called destiny can be destroyed by geography.

Don't become a victim of a bad geography: leaving your motherland, Nigeria, doesn't make you a coward. When the condition is right, you can return. Didn't Wole Soyinka return?

Stop listening to your old uncle, who is perpetually hopeful (encouraging you to stay put), and annoyingly telling you to continue to pray for Nigeria.

Even in the Bible, Moses prayed, but he also led his people out of Egypt.

Am I speaking to somebody?

Your theory has been proved in the book outliers. Success in life 98 percent geographical environment while the rest of the 2 percent is up to your personal effort. Imagine Bill gates being born in Somalia, a country that had no ATM until 2014. His school in the USA already had computers when everyone in Africa didnt even know what is a computer.

Even that 2% is a function of luck: good genes, good genes, good genes. If you have the genes of a drug addict/lazy person you're not even accessing that 2%. And then of course how those genes get expressed in the external environment matters. Are you thrust into prosperous circumstances in a first world country or are you born into some sh.t existence in Afghanistan? And then luck with timing which the book also discusses. If Bill Gates was born a decade too early, he's not the one leading the PC revolution of the 80s and 90s. National boundaries are myths we've told ourselves for whatever reasons to make us feel good about ourselves. You always have to take the 40,000 foot view of nature to give you the best chance of maximizing your talents and abilities.

He changed it for the worst Sha. Destabilized the middle east and Libya and then made sure Buhari was president of Nigeria.

Environment influences success or failure to a large percentage, say 60%.

From the biblical stories of Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Joseph . . . to this contemporary time we live in.

It's an undeniable phenomenon in human existence. However, it affects different people in varying degrees with a coalescence of other factors such as gene, education, EQ/IQ, time and chance.

This is absolute rubbish! Yes, you have greater chances of being financially better in a saner environment/country. But no, Obama didn't change the world. And Trump is a testament that being US president doesn't necessarily mean you are smart or sane even.

The Bill Gates story is a good but weak argument. Without early access to computers, the world might not have Microsoft today. Yet, you overlook the fact that Gates is an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs solve problems. They push human race forward. The bring new and better solutions. Gates only saw the kinda solutions he could see with the problems around him. Aliko Dangote is doing exactly what Gates did. Just different industries, but they're solving the problems they see. Mukesh Ambani, Carlo Slim, and several others. The Bill Gates and computers argument is weak. If Gates was born in Nigeria, he definitely would never be one of those repairmen at Computer Village. He might have been one of the founders of the big banks (FUGAZ), a telecom entrepreneur, or a big industrialist himself.

Japa with sense!

Dangote isn't really solving problems. He's creating more and destroying the Nigerian economy. Nigeria has the most expensive cement price in the world despite having limestone in excess. You just can't compare Bill Gates to dangote at all. Microsoft has really helped the American tech industry in ways that can't be imagined. How has dangote helped anything in Nigeria aside destroying it.

Outliers was an average book about great people, written for average people to be content with their average lives.

PS: I'm not replying the senseless mentions above.

You're overrating entrepreneurs. Humans solve problems period. In the value chain of problem solving, entrepreneurs rank much lower if we're trying to get all pedantic about it. I'd put thinkers(Aristotle over Rockefeller), scientists(Newton over Musk), and world class political leaders(Obama/Mandela over Bezos) over any of history's best entrepreneurs. And yes occasionally all those qualities can be found in one person. Without Obama's green friendly policies for electric-car companies, it's possible progress may have slowed and we don't have Tesla today. We haven't thought or lead our way through the problems we've had in this country, an entrepreneur isn't doing that for you.
