My Cucumber Farming Dairy (pilot Phase) by ChuksDaVinci: 7:59pm On Mar 28, 2021 |
So, I've decided on adding Cucumber to my farming activities this year, 2021. It's been years since I last grew Cucumber (6/7 years ago), and even then, I did it at a small scale (garden) level for personal consumption and limited sales. This year, I want to try something special, and I'll be starting with a Pilot Phase, to test run some of my ideas, and train some of my farmers. This is what I've done so far.

LAND PREPARATION I did all farm work myself (ably aided by my Muse ). So, I have zero labour cost. Used left over bamboo from Yam farm of the previous year. Bought Polythene bags at Onitsha Main Market @ #1200 for 100pcs. Cleared my small site on the 25th of March (Day). Completed bamboo trellis on the 26th of March. Started the previous night. Filled bags with a mixture of Loamy soil and ash, same day 26th (Evening). 1 Like

I chose to farm in polythene bags to better manage my limited water resources (Rainfall is currently unreliable). For this Pilot phase I, I'm using 30 bags. I left room for expansion into a Pilot phase II. 1 Share

PLANTING - 27/03-2021 Sowed my seeds on the 27th of March. Two seeds per hole. Two seeded holes per bags. 30 bags. Expecting a total of 60 plant stands. I watered before planting. And watered again at night. So far, watering has been very economical because there is less wastage. I make only two trips with my Watering Can (of about 15 Liters).

Barbsamiin: I'm based in Delta, so I got mine at Agbor. Agric Office. You can get yours wherever you're based. Just ask around for Sellers of Hybrid seeds. Produced by Premier or Technisem or any other. |

zxcvbnmlkjhgfds: Ash (wood ash) is good sources of macro and micro nutrients for your plant, they are rich in potassium, and also help in conditioning your soil (are alkaline). |

I thank God this is an experimental farm because that seed you are using is a joy killer,it is just meant for small gardens like that,if tried on a commercial scale the result will not be funny, poor vigor, low yields, poor disease resistance, longer days to maturity, etc.these are things that makes it a poor choice for commercial farming.if possible the pilot test will be complete if you plant another variety like cu 999 by the side and compare,I don't know your location but I can send you the small satchet of cu 999(70-80 seeds)for you to also plant and compare the performance,if you are ready for the challenge send your name, location and phone contact to my WhatsApp 081+199+420+49. 2 Likes |

noeloge82: I'm glad I can learn from this, and show my results here. Like I stated earlier, I've not grown Cucumber in a long while (6/7 years), I was focused on other Crops and Livestock.... And if I recall correctly, I used several varieties: Alpha-Beta, Marketer (Not Market-more) and Murano. The result was encouraging. |

DAY 6 - 01/04/21 Between 80 -85% of the seeds have sprouted. There are signs that some would soon emerge. Since the start of sprouting, two days ago, the plants have more than tripled in size.... They grow very very fast. 1 Like
