So what is your business with Medicine and other medical courses when veterinary medicine is this prestigious and lucrative in Nigeria.
Face your animals and rest. At least, even start the course and finish instead of pulling out your research to hype the course. I don't even get the reason for your rant. But your insecurity inferiority complex is obvious in the way you are going about it.
It seems like you are trying to motivate yourself with all these arguments and facts to study the course that you are not excited about. Motivating yourself with facts to study a course I believe is a good idea, than motivating yourself with falsehood and delusion, then afterwards finding out you have been mislead and lied to, like many folks on this thread |

No you can lecture anybody, In UNILAG some of my Lecturers in Pharmacology are BSC some are B.PHarm some a MBBS.
So it depends. But in Pharmacy their are some department you can't lecture in if you are not a Pharmacist.
But Anatomy even final year student self dey take tutorial talkless of Research Fellow. My chief, this area is my field, I studied Bsc Anatomy as my first degree so I know what I'm saying, infact during our conference this was among the major bone of contention, I believe I've furnished you with evidence on this thread. And even those ones who are your lecturers would be gradually eased out and replace with "medically qualified lecturers" You know the funny thing Mbbs, DVM, and BDS are recognized as medically qualified to teach a course I studied for 5 years while I can't. I provided evidence earlier in the thread. 1 Like |

Zeeknow3245: Allied Health refers to professionals out of the 'Medical' sphere. They include Nurses, Pharmacists, Optometrist, Laboratory scientist, Radiographers, Physiotherapist/Medical Rehabilitation in Nigeria. Medical means 'Medicine'. I don't want to talk the US here because they offer some Degrees which can't be used in many places of the world as it is used in the country. In Nigeria there are only three existing which is ; Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. These professions operate independently except in Nigeria and some countries where Dentist are with Medicine because the country has poor oral health. Now the problem in Nigeria now is more of a matter of greed rather than 'delivering' essential services. Many professions in the Allied Health have extended their "degree" to six years because they want to bear the "Doc" title not because of creating better ways of helping the patients in general. One thing we must remember is that no matter how long you make the duration, it can never be a branch of Medicine. Radiographers are Image Technologist whose job is to use advance Technology to get right images of the internal environment of people or Animals if need be. They also prep patients for Scan. Once this scan is made into radiographs it is sent to the Radiologist for reading and Diagnostics. The Radiographer has no right whatsoever in any country to diagnose patients. It is of recent that Msc in Diagnostic Radiography which has given Radiographers a bit liberty to read Radiographs as a result of the tedious jobs done by Radiologists. Even at that, a Signature of a Radiologist is needed. In hospitals it under the 'Radiology' department. Laboratory scientist major aim is similar to Radiographers which is drawing blood and running various test as prescribed by the Doctor or Nurse if need be. Diagnostics isn't part of the scope of Laboratory science world wide. Then the test results are sent to doctors for reading. Direct sending of results to doctors to read is done only if the Pathologist is unavailable in the region. Pathologist 'Medical' doctor reads the test result, analyses it for defaults, make suggestions and send it to the Medical Doctor. In Hospitals in all countries have a Pathologist who mans the Lab. Medical Laboratory Science was created as a need to make work easier for Pathologists who wouldn't be able to run tests, research and still read results. Simply put it as 'Fill a void' In countries Like UK, US they're under the Pathology association but here in Nigeria it is a rift because they can't subject themselves to higher authority. A Radiologist goes overboard by operating machines, A pathologist goes overboard when he decides to start running an Analyser etc. One other problem is asking for 'Equal' pay which isn't feasible considering it is not done anywhere in the world. My prayer is for everybody to know his /her Job and do it effectively. Good morning I wanted to ignore this rant but I was prompted to check your previous posts. Seeing you are still a greenhorn in the medical field, it will be pointless to argue with you. Rather, I'd advice you review your purpose and reason for being in the medical field. If you graduate and start practicing with this mentality, you will only succeed in propagating seeds of hatred and discord in your workplace. I hope and pray you find true peace and acceptance within yourself. 1 Like |

seunH: I believe at this juncture, I'll have to step in. I want to implore both parties especially @zeeknow to stop this bickering. There is no profession that is not important or does not have a role in the scheme of events. "MLS is useless, MLS is useless" but you cannot get a confirmatory diagnosis without a medical lab report !!! "MLS is useless, MLS is useless" you cannot be admitted for surgery without a medical lab report and can not even be discharged!!! "MLS is useless MLS is useless" they form an important component of ANC. My point is that, there is no profession that is not important in the scheme of things, if these professions were useless they would have naturally gone into extinction. However in as much as all these professions have their roles, we have what we call "professional heirachy" or you could say ranking. For example, no matter how highly educated a MLT(Technician) graduate is, he/she cannot be placed in the same level or above an MLS (Scientist), that is what is called professional heirachy. Professional heirachy is determined by many factors, some of which include 1) Duration of study 2) Credit load of course 3) Impact of the profession in the scheme of events etc. In Nigeria today, the professional heirachy in the human health profession include the following 1) Medical doctors, Dentist and Optometry+/- 2) Pharmacist+/- 3) Medical Lab Science/Nursing/Radiography/Physiotherapy etc 4) Basic sciences: Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology etc 5) Technicians: MLT, Dental Technician, CHEW, X-ray Technician etc. At close observation, you would observe that I did not include Veterinary medicine, that is because Veterinarians are not under human health workers rather animal health workers, that is why there are not part of Johesu and even when going on a joint epidemiological survey for example during Ebola, Bird flu pandemic they come under animal/Veterinary component. But the wisdom behind it, is that 2 captains cannot sail a ship. If Veterinarians are under human health, who would then sail the ship because as far as professional heirachy is concerned, Veterinarians are at the top of the food chain, same heirachy as Human doctors (as shown in the publication above), whether we feel they are relevant or not, it is what it is. In conclusion, I would wish for all these bickering to stop, everyone is important in their own respective ways, let's concentrate on making our respective profession more useful to the society and we would see that respect would be a natural sequalae!!!! God bless you!! |

Embryologist I think ought to be working with fertility centres right or IVF? If you've read what's on page one you would have understand where I am getting at. Anyways I feel humbled to have replied to an Embryologist. I don't think they are many in Nigeria but I am pleased to have quoted one. I apologise for the mix up. Yours was more explicit. So you are not aware that Medical Lab Scientists can also train and specialize professionally in Clinical embryology and fertility Science. Go and google Dr Faduola Paul and Abim fertility labs? You think the medical laboratory field is a joke? This is a Canadian Insitute that trains Scientists on Clinical embryology practice. https://cellmolecules.ca/national-clinical-embryologist-training-centre/ |

You're wrong my sister in Saner countries, Medical Doctors head the hospital the only rival they have are those with MBA(Masters in Business Administration). JOHESU have lied and will continue to lie. In the US, UK and Canada, MLS, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Optometry, Orthotics and Prosthetics are under the following departments: Pathology, Radiology, Physical medicine,Opthalmology, Orthopaedics respectively.Nursing is somewhat independent in some states in the US but not in the UK. Why were these professions created? They boss everything. Can a Medical laboratory Scientist perform a full autopsy in a crime scene? In my Profession Veterinary Medicine, Our Veterinary teaching Hospital , Laboratory Scientist have no guts whatsoever to make one decision about a patient. We have almost all the departments in our profession. You give people opportunities, they abuse it. In the UK and USA, Radiography has its Licensing board but are under the Radiology board. In MLS , American Society of Clinical Pathologist house the Licensing organisation Association of Clinical Laboratory Scientist. In the UK, Royal College of Pathologist License Laboratory Scientist. So have your facts first abeg before coming to defend these Liars JOHESU asking for equal pay and opportunities. In many countries a Nurse can never ever sign a death certificate. A Physiotherapist can never perform surgery and many drugs are restricted for Physiotherapist administering. If it was to be a position of Minister of Health, Commissioner for health, special advisor for health, then anybody can fill in. In the UK a Nurse earns 18000 pounds for a start and then move upwards after many years of practice to 35000 pounds per year. A Medical doctor earns 25000-28000 thousand pounds per year and move up to 750000 pounds over the years. In the US, a Nurse earns 65000 dollars as an RN for a start and move upwards after specialities to 127000 dollars per year. Let me not talk much abeg.

I have been an embryologist for 5 years and jobs are hard to come by. I am in Canada presently and same thing over here, i am even looking for funds to go back to schools. In my opinion, it is better to study a course with so many job opportunities there is no point in being so specialized that you cannot work. it is just like being a ''space traveler'' ( cant remember what they call them now) and there are no readily vacancies. = you can study nursing and specialise in fertility nursing. wonderful aspect, consider this That is my advise. However, to be an embryologist, you have to be lucky to find an organization willing to give you your first big break, then you grow from there. You just must have a science background . |
