In every cat's life there comes a time when owners are required to give him medicine in syrup or a pill. Sometimes it is a routine medicine such as a worm pill and sometimes it is an antibiotic given due to an injury or illness. Most cat owners are familiar with the problems of cat medication. In some cases the cat foams the medicine (due to its taste) or it bites and scratches the owner. In addition, sometimes the need to give medicine, puts the owner in fear of harming the cat.

Because of this, we decided to help you and provide some tips and methods for administering medicines and pills to cats in a simple way at home and without "wars" with the cat.

If the methods described do not work we recommend talking to your veterinarian about restraining by various methods (such as wrapping the cat in a towel) or injecting long-acting antibiotics that will save the need for medication to be given to the cat by the owner.

So how to give pills to a domestic cat with minimal risk of scratches or injuries?

• Opening the cat's mouth by applying pressure with the finger and thumb on both sides of the cat's jaw, in this way even moderate pressure will cause the cat to open its mouth. Using the other hand, the drug is inserted deep into the cat's mouth.
• Mixing the medicine with food - an old and well-known method of mixing the medicines with yoghurt or canned food (effective only for a medicine that is not too bitter or has a strong odor). You can also use canned tuna which due to its strong taste and smell can be used to camouflage the smell and taste of the medicine.
Use butter to give the cat a ball - Using a sharp knife, cut a thin layer of butter and use this layer to wrap the ball that should be given to the cat. The butter-wrapped ball should be put in the freezer. The cat's mouth and put the butter-wrapped ball.In this method the ball slides easily into the cat's throat and it also does not feel the taste of the medicine.
• Another method is to use a commercial product such as a "bullet gun" that allows the bullet to be inserted deep into the cat's throat without the risk of a bite.
• Another commercial product is easy pill or pill pocket. These are actually tasty snacks meant for sphynx cats where there is room for hiding pills (and so the cat cannot feel the taste or smell of the medicine hidden inside the snack).
Important Note - After giving a medicine to a cat, close its mouth and pat its throat to make it swallow the medicine.
