5 Things I Have Learned From Working In A One Man Business by Nobody: 11:12am On May 18, 2021
I was previously a banker in one of Nigeria’s leading banks until I got frustrated and left about a year ago. Honestly bank work is a scam finally, when I package with my suit people think I am doing well but in reality nothing dey my pocket. Moved to a smaller organisation that offered me 2 times my salary in the bank, and here are my observations so far:

1. Learn How To Do Eye Service:
Always try impress the company owner. Initially I had no idea of this because I was coming from a more structured organisation but with time it has become a way of life to me.

2. There Is Nothing Like Job Function And Delegation:
In a one man business, do everything you possibly can. Even if you are assigned to an administrative office you should also try to get involved in sales and marketing. This is the only way you can earn the respect of the boss.

3. Be ready to deal with the different moods of the boss:
Today he can be happy and all, while tomorrow he can loose it and snap at your slightest mistake. Don’t take it personal just move on. *Work smart not hard, always try to focus your energy on things that the boss would easily notice.

4. Don’t Be A Peoples Person In The Office:
Always remember that the only person that matters is the boss. Avoid unnecessary side talks and gossips.

5. Lastly Know When Its Time To Move On:
There is limit to the level you can attain in a smaller organisation. Make sure you are making contacts and plotting your next move during your time there. In fact, the owner can wake up tomorrow and decide to close the company, so shine your eyes.

Op didn't stress very well on the eye service, in a one man business, it's very important to paint yourself like an angel of light before your boss, be at his office before he even calls you and ask him if there are any errands he will like you to run, build a very close relationship with him and you'll get promotions and salary raise you don't merit.

One man business is like a church setting, where you have the senior pastor and other junior pastors assisting him, most times, when it's time for promotion the senior pastor promotes the most loyal junior pastor and not the most qualified. This is how it is in one man business. This I have seen.

Until Nigeria has a better labour law, one man Busines's employees would be in a dangerous trap

You practically have no rights like a beggar, and your boss can deny you anytime

Good thread, let us add more for the benefits of sane members here...

Advantages Of One-Man Business

The following are the advantages of the one-man business.

Personal interest of the owner enhances efficiency.
Decision taking is quick since the owner does not need to consult anybody.

He enjoys profits from the business alone.

The owner enjoys independence since he is his own boss.

There is personal contact with his employees, so employee's motivation is thus enhanced.

The sole proprietor can have more than one occupation.

Disadvantages of One-Man Business

There is limited capital for expansion purposes.

This is partly due to the inability of the owner to borrow money from banks.

The sole proprietor has unlimited liability as his personal assets can be sold in case of business failure.

The business is not a separate legal entity, therefore, it cannot sue or be sued.

Sole proprietor business lacks the certainty of continuity because the death of the owner or poor management can result in the death of the business.

The owner of a sole proprietorship has the disadvantages in the area of specialization because he is involved in too many activities.

His decision, in most cases, may not be effective because two good heads are better than one

The biggest scam is bank job...Sai

You tie rope for neck from Monday to Thursday then on Friday you comot rope keep find small native or normal clothe wear go work.

You go fresh coz AC dey hammer you daily till weekend but at the end of the day after paying rent and transportation you're left with nothing.

unless you're a top guy or a bank manager, it's difficult to build a house with that salary. but thank God sha.

Meanwhile LMAO

I learn how to lick ass the hard way. to succeed ,especially working for an old boss, if you no lick ass, no show.

You have to learn how to please the boss(at all cost). The OP is on point here!!!

Thank God those days are gone!!!

You forgot this important part
you will do job beyond the job description
In one man business, just be praying so they won't sack one person.
If one person gets sack, others will have to do the work of the sacked individual. He might not be replaced, increasing the workload of other innocent folks.
you might be promoted but you are less likely to get a raise
This one everybody salary is stagnant, and yes your supervisor salary might be slightly higher than yours.
you will be threatened everyday with getting sacked
Like the OP said, the emotional abuse will be too much, and the pent up negative frustration needs to be released somewhere, it is more Likely that individual brings the negative emotions to his/her home. OP no one I repeat no one can withstand emotional abuse, it needs to be channeled out.
working harder than the rest won't grant you favor
Never give 100% of your energy working one man business, people will get used to your performance, the day you will slack will be the day they will complain about you, while the other lazy staff won't get any complain because they are used to their working lifestyle.
