FG Promises N5m Each To Families Of Slain Corps Members by Beaf: 10:07pm On May 10, 2011 |
FG gives N5m each to families of slain corps members By Vincent Ikuomola, Abuja2 hours 9 minutes ago The familes of the ten corps members killed in the post election riots that rocked most states in the North after the April 16 presidentail election have each been promised N5million by the Federal Government. President Goodluck Jonathan who announced the gesture today also said the names of the deceased would be permanently immortalized as an enduring source of inspiration to all. The corps members are Adewumi Paul, Ekiti, Okeoma Okechukwu Chibudom, Imo, Ukazeone Amsalem Chukwunonyere, Imo, Olawale Tosin, Kogi, Akonye Ibrahim Sule, Kogi, Gbejo Ebenizar Ayotunde, Osun, Adeniyi Kehinde Jelil, Osun, Anyanwu Agnes, Imo, Okpokori Obina, Imo and Adohe Elliot, Bayelsa. With regards to those who suffered varying degrees of injuries, the president said in addition to his earlier directive that the respective State Governments take charge of their medical bills, the Federal Government would give each of them automatic employment on completion of their National Service. These gestures, the president said are not meant to compensate for the lives lost or for disabilities suffered, adding no amount of recognition can adequately compensate for the deep void that their passing away has created in the individual families. The token according to him is the country's way of demonstrating its appreciation for the great sacrifice which these young patriots have made in the national cause. President Jonathan also used the opportunity to warn that the culture of impunity must stop in this country. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news-update/5690-fg-gives-n5m-to-each-families-of-slain-corps-members.html |

Skanas: The bolded shows the sheer scale of the job to be done, in depth and breadth. When you consider our police force from all aspects, discipline, orientation, training, equipment, skills and abilities, intellect, weaponry, financing, mission scope and understanding etc it just seems impossible to fix the current police force. Where does one begin without flooding the labour market with each and every single member of the police service? I don't envy the FG. But reforming the police as the most important visible arm of the security services is a task that must be done. |

GEJ has done well for that compensation, thou it cannot be measured to the loss, but it will go a long way to pacify the families |

Arrant nonesense! If these families accept this money with mounting pressure on the government to thoroughly investigate and bring to book both the killers and the government officials who failed in thier duty to nigeria, then truly thier ward died in vien! FG giving each family 5million is slap on the face!Given how much GEJ reportedly (though not confirmed yet) spent on his election. 5000000/253 =£19,685.03! Thats utter rubbish. In civilized climes, all you would have heard is un disclosed sum 'cos of the wright of the fine the government would be required to pay the victims' families. May the soul of the dead in christ rest in peace, Amen. |

Beaf: The Federal Government has no problems disbursing large amounts to Governors and campaign managers at a minute's notice; however, in this case, they "promise" the families a paltry N5 million. Give me a break . What would it take GEJ to have them paid the money (whatever the amount immediately)?? Which one be "promise"?? The total of N50 million does not have to be promised by a serious government. It is just done once and for all. No need for promises. |

This is an insult to the families, imagine if the corp members were told the value of their lives was N5mil b4 the election and how many wud have accepted the job?? This shows that FGN is out of touch with reality hitting the masses. N5mil can not cover the cost of 4yrs higher education in Nigeria which includes: Transport, feeding , accommodation, handouts, school fess, levies, clothing, projects and other cost not to mention medical expenses. Anything less than N50million is an insult. Where the senate president earns 250mil quarterly allowance those who were killed in the process to conducting election that would enable the political thieves earn such money to the detriment of the masses are been rubbish with N5mil. I hope future corpers will knw that the FGN has pegged the value of their lives at N5million. Why INEC had no life Assurance coverage for them beats my imagination. Why military Jets were not scrambled to the hot zones or paratroopers dropped from the sky is beyond my understanding. The painful part of it is that they died avoidable deaths. FGN should cut the salaries of political office holders by 50% for 2yrs including that of the president, senators, govs, chairmen etc and use it to pay families of the slain corp members, the announcement of N5mil will only bring more tears to the family because its like saying they couldn't have earned anything close or above that amount if 30 more yrs had been added to their lifespan. It is simply disgusting! If the FGN refuses to pay N50mil the family members shud decline the amount and sue the govt. |

What about those that have been killed as a result of accidents (bad roads) while serving their country? or armed robbery attacks on the highway? or kidnappings? and the other innocent victims that have lost their lives as a result of instability, lack of security and infrastructure? Those who died in Jos?? Will those families also be compensated?? or they are not heroes because they did not die in the election violence? Weren't they also serving their country when they died? The issue is not the compensation. It's about the program. It needs to be fixed, readjusted, updated, reviewed. It needs to change. N5m? smh. I would rather hear that the government is working on adjusting the program and improving the infrastructure. We need permanent change. What makes us so sure that 3months from now, a crisis wont arise elsewhere that will result in the death of corpers? |

Here is the full story and kindly read the bolded parts. President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday announced a token N5m monetary compensation for each of the families of the 10 National Youth Service Corps members killed in the violence that trailed the presidential elections in some Northern states. In addition to the monetary compensation, one unemployed graduate sibling of each of the late corps members will be offered automatic federal employment. Also, all other NYSC members injured during the riots will gain automatic employment into federal establishments on the completion of their service. Addressing the 10 bereaved families at the Council Chambers of the State House, Jonathan said the NYSC members did not die in vain. He promised that they would be immortalised “as an enduring source of inspiration” to all Nigerians. Jonathan said, “Your sons and daughters may be gone, but they have not died in vain. You can take some solace in the fact that they are today national heroes of whom every patriotic Nigerian is immensely proud. “Our administration holds them in the highest esteem and we are determined to ensure that their names are permanently immortalised as an enduring source of inspiration to us all. “I appreciate the fact that no amount of recognition can adequately compensate for the deep void that their passing has created in your individual families. “However, in demonstration of our gratitude for the supreme sacrifice that they have paid in the service of Nigeria, I have decided that each of the 10 families of these gallant young men and women will receive a token monetary compensation of N5m. “You may wish to proceed directly from this meeting to the NYSC secretariat as I have directed the Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Ismaila Tsiga, to pay out this money immediately. “In addition, each of the families which has an unemployed graduate who is a direct sibling of the deceased could forward the names of such persons to the Director-General for processing automatic employment in the Federal Civil Service. “With regards to those who suffered varying degrees of injuries, additional to my earlier directive that the state governments take charge of their medical bills, the Federal Government hereby guarantees each of them automatic employment on completion of their national service.” Noting that the monetary compensation was not enough, the President said his gestures were “not meant to compensate for the lives lost or for disabilities suffered.” He described their deaths as tragic and vowed that perpetrators of the post-election violence would not go unpunished. Jonathan said, “Let me seize this opportunity to state in the clearest terms possible that this administration is resolved to ensure that all those who may have been directly or indirectly responsible for this national tragedy face the full weight of the law. “The culture of impunity must stop in this country. Tomorrow (today), I will formally inaugurate the Fact-finding Committee which will undertake a thorough investigation of the unfortunate incident. “I want to assure you that those found culpable will be brought to justice.” The President enjoined all Nigerians to honour the memory of the dead NYSC members by rededicating themselves to the peace and unity of the country. The dead NYSC members whose families were represented at the meeting are, Adewunmi Seun Paul (Ekiti); Ukeoma Chibuzor (Imo); Ukazeoma Chukwunonyerem (Imo); Oladele Tosin (Kogi); Ibrahim Sule (Kogi); Gbejo Akintunde (Osun); Adeniyi Jelil (Osun); Anyanwu Agnes (Imo); Okpokiri Obinna (Abia); and Adohe Elliot (Bayelsa). Speaking on behalf of the families, Mr. Atuche Okpokiri expressed regrets that the NYSC and other relevant authorities did not get in touch with them in time to inform them that their children had been killed in the riots. “Communication was nothing to write home about; most of the families did not know anything about the death of their children until several days later”, he said. Okpokiri also told Jonathan that some of the families were denied transport fares for the trips to Abuja by NYSC offices in their states. Calling for a review of the NYSC scheme, Okpokiri stressed that “no compensation would be meaningful until the perpetrators are brought to book.” He urged the President to ensure that “this sacrifice which these children have done should be the last sacrifice towards the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria and the unification of the country.” Meanwhile, the Presidency has described as “unfortunate and regrettable”, reports that the Congress for Progressive Change justified the killings of the NYSC members. It said in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ima Niboro, on Tuesday that the CPC action amounted to an open admission that its supporters were indeed behind the violence. The statement reads in part, “This attempt by the CPC to justify the unfortunate carnage and bloodletting is vexatious in the extreme. “It amounts to rubbing salt on the raw wounds of families who lost dear ones, and those who were maimed and lost valuable property to the carnage. “It also amounts to an open admission that the party’s supporters were indeed behind the violence, and that the party may well have planned it all. “Obviously, therefore, the riots couldn’t have been as a result of the conduct of the presidential elections in those areas where the bulk of the killings took place. “The CPC justification of murder and arson must be condemned by all. It is wicked, callous and insensitive.” http://punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201105113284815 |

xremmy: I dont mean to sound harsh but, those who were affected by the violence will be guaranteed immediate employment upon completion of service? So they are the only ones who deserve employment? and the thousands of others who were not injured yet risk their lives everyday to serve their country? Maybe they should have also been part of the violence so that they can also benefit from this employment and be FORTUNATE/LUCKY. I am seriously not moved by this. We need to look at the bigger picture. How about addressing the issue of unemployment?? where will you even give these victims automatic employment?? which office?? Those responsible will be brought to justice? we are yet to determine these people o. Na so so promise em always promise. Everybody wey die, " the culprits will be brought to justice". It's been how long now since they been singing this song? I have worries that the whole issue will soon be put aside. Im waiting to see the true culprits (not the one that the police will falsely arrest) being brought to book. |
