Vacation is here again. Time for students to rest and experience life outside the four walls of a school. But Summer Lesson has been abused and misused. Both parents and their wards have no idea what summer break should entails.

I stumbled on a letter on the net recently, which I deem fit to be shared here for the benefit of parents and their children.

Dear Parents,

A child will go to school by 7am and close by 5pm for five days out of the seven days in a week.

During weekends that child comes home with many assignments in all the subjects he or she is offering in school and at such, there won’t be time to rest and play at the weekends.

The child does that for almost four months hoping to enjoy the holidays only for the school (in collaboration with the parents) to come up with an unnecessary activities in the name of holidays lesson.

What exactly do you want to teach that child again at this period? Is it what he or she learnt in the just concluded session or what they will learn next term?

Dear Nigerian parents, summer holiday is a period you allow a child to experience other things in life apart from formal education.

Allow them to travel for the vacation and if you do not have money for that, take them to places where they will learn new skills.

I partially concur with OP and you..Summer is meant for the children to experience stuff outside the normal educational curriculum and build their hobbies..In the school I own, we don’t do any educational activities during summer holiday rather we engage in teaching the children how to paint, swim, engage in rigorous sport, drama and all sought of fun..it’s in summer we plan our excursions and our inter house sports games..
But many parents are turned off by the price and prefer there children to be taught book and book all through summer in preparation for the next class.
Thanks for your understanding.

Bro there is time for every thing. Holiday is holiday. My kids go flex.

Sitting at home doing What?
And who is going to sit with them at home? The parents who are doing 8-4 o'clock jobs?
Or u going to leave little children all by themselves?
There is a reason parents demanded for summer lessons. It has nothing to do with academic lesson.

Just pray you don't have a slow learner child. Then, you'll see the need of a home teacher.

Some people say it doesn't matter how little time they spend with my children, as long as its quality time. But why do we have to choose between the virtues of quantity versus the quality? Both quantity and quality are important in many areas of our lives, including how we relate with our children. They need our time and the best we have to give them. Children are the best gift so when it comes to giving them time and attention, they deserve the best in both quantity and quality.

Most parent, especially mothers are not ready to spend time with their children. Aside their jobs, some parent don't have single knowledge of parenting. They look for the slightest opportunity to "dump" them with a caregiver where they'd run their ugly mouths on teachers or caregivers for their own failure.

What a world

This is an understatement bro. It is way beyond this in many cases.

I once taught in a private primary school around 2008. My class had 48 students and the school fee per term per pupil was #15000.

Guess my salary?
It was #6500.
We were 2 teachers managing a class. Our combined salary per term was less than 5 pupils' school fees. And we were mandated to ensure school fees were paid, hence no salary payment!

The same school required we resume 7am and close 5pm. Then rotational weekend to supervise boarding pupils.

It was that bad!

There's nothing wrong with Summer Lessons. It is not made compulsory by any school in Nigeria.
Besides, Most children are usually idle during the Summer breaks and parents always prefer them engaged during that period than staying home playing from morning till night.
Leave the debate on the importance of summer lessons to parents.
It is not compulsory but the teacher insists on not going back to the lessons he thought during that period and he will continue from there

The society is no longer what it used to be.

With the summer classes, the pupils get prepared for the task ahead of them. Also, the patient pupils will begin to get used to the scheme of work for the next term.

Most of these children don't play while at home. The schools have play grounds where they play. Also, they are happy seeing their friends and playing with them when they go for the summer classes.

Teachers also need to eat. They get involved in other to add to the little they are paid.

All the people involved in this summer classes: the parents, the pupils and the teachers. So, I am not against summer classes.

Please stop that. Man must chop now. For some private schools, no salary during the holiday. It is the little you get during the summer school you have to manage with. If parents are not complaining please stop it. Besides, some parents want it because it is not easy to keep children at home doing nothing. Some parents will also go out for work and the children must be at somewhere safe.
NO, you stop being erroneous instead. We cannot continue to tread on a wrong path because some people want to eat, that's the problem with Nigeria. Summer lesson is a scam.

Holiday period is the time to create bond with your children. They have been deprived of that for too long.

By the way, this image is what you need.

I'm glad I never went through the stress of after school lessons or holidays lessons.
In my primary school days we travel for holidays and play like wildcats. During secondary school, we stay at home, watch TV and and sleep.
In was in my SS3 that I did after school lesson for just a few months and stopped cos there was nothing new there. Then I studied at home after school till I wrote my WAEC exams.
I can never allow my child attend any after school lessons..if you are not okay with what you learn during school hrs then you will have to go and acquire a skill.
With all the extra lessons, they still can't pass WAEC and JAMB without copying. What then is the need?
Schools don't know the damage they cuase to kids when they faik to allow the brain to rest. They stress it so much it stops retaining information.

Oga there is no best method to train children, if your children are the noisy type, give them something to engage them.

Whatever works for you, do it.

if you think Nigeria kids are under pressure, check helicopter mum's in the USA. or tiger mum in Asia who pressure their kids to succed academically by all means.

the world is changing rapidly, kids with good education get an unfair advantage over their mates, I still regret growing up without a library

When I was little..the first assignment when we resume after the holiday is ..."write a composition explaining how you spent your holiday....."

Then when it's holiday..we are sent by my parents to bond with her sister's children in other state..we spend sometimes a month...and other times her children com to us...and we also go to uncle's families.....

Now young and new generation parents have killed that and turned Nigeria into only a nuclear family..kids DNT know their cousins anymore.....very bad!

I am also of the opinion that holiday should be used for bonding just like it was in the past

Most parents only do so to delegate their parental responsibilities.

Many people are too busy chasing nonsense up and down to give attention to their wards.
That nonsense you stated is what feeds the family, in this difficult period in Nigeria. Summer school is not compulsory so what is your argument.......the last time I checked .

This is what I'm discussing with my wife, that what is our 3years son going to learn at summer lesson? We should leave the boy to play around but madam refuse.
The thing is parent are so lazy, they can't stand their children wahala grin
Another is work, you can't take your children to work during this holiday, so parent opt for summer lesson.
Same here with my wife, my daughter is 3yrs as well, what i have concluded is for her to join a program where they are taught to read, dance, play games and generally have fun, 3 days in a week
