This is a big dent on Nigeria’s image. Both factions should’ve settled this problem last year and focus on sports development.

One question…what happened to the kits supplied? Did AFA sports kits company not supply the athletes with enough kits?

That is the big question.

The athletes wore AFA kits at the Olympics, but I don't know if the company supplied enough kits.

According to Ibrahim Gusau, this crisis is the reason that ten of our athletes were excluded from the Olympics.

The ten athletes were excluded because they had not been tested in the way that was prescribed by the Athletics Integrity Unit. The home based athletes were tested, the elite foreign based athletes were tested, but these athletes that are based in universities in the US were not tested.

The athletes said that they were asked to send their names and addresses to the AFN and they did so (I'm not sure which faction they sent it to), but they were not tested.

The Okowa faction of the AFN accepted responsibility for the problem. They said it was an internal issue within the federation that caused the mistake and that they had appointed a professor to oversee their drug testing processes from now on.

However, the Gusau faction rejected the statement by the Okowa faction. They said that the National Anti-Doping Committee (which is in charge of drug testing in Nigeria) released names of athletes that it was going to test. The Gusau faction said it noticed that these ten athletes' names were not on the list and so it sent the ten names to the Sports Ministry, so it is not their fault that the ten athletes were not tested. (I don't know if what they said is true)

There are two factions in the AFN.

One faction signed the deal with Puma and the other faction is denying that there's any deal.

The reason that the athletes did not wear the Puma outfits is because the Sports Ministry accused the faction that signed the deal with Puma of corruption. They said that the money from Puma was paid into a private account.

However, the DSS and other security agencies investigated that faction and said that they did not find any evidence of corruption.

The deal was signed in 2018.. as at when the deal was signed there was no faction then.. the faction issue started latter as a leadership tussle on who to emerge as it's new leadership.. the minister is with Okowa's brother as AFN chairman while Gusau won his reelection ..
Even world Athletics body came to Nigeria but still couldn't resolve the issue and left them to their fate..
If Puma sue them.. they would win cos.. as at when the contract was signed in 2018 there wasn't any faction, it was a one house.. making the contract legal and binding..

This is the source of the dispute.

Ibrahim Gusau was the president of the AFN. However, some members of the board said that they had impeached him. Gusau insisted that he had not been impeached.

The members that claimed that they had impeached Gusau held an election in Abuja. This election was backed by the Sports Ministry and the Delta State Sports Commission Chairman, Tonobok Okowa, was elected president of the AFN. Meanwhile, the Gusau faction also held an election in Birnin Kebbi and Gusau was re-elected president in that election.

The Gusau faction of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria signed a sponsorship deal with Puma at the 2019 World Championship in Doha, Qatar. This deal is one of the major reasons for the impeachment and dispute.

The Okowa Faction of the AFN, along with the Sports Ministry, claimed that the details of the sponsorship contract were not made public. They also accused the Gusau led faction of corruption. They said that the faction deposited the money from the sponsorship deal in a private account.

The Sports Ministry petitioned the DSS to investigate the Gusau faction and Ibrahim Gusau was invited to see the DSS. However, the DSS later wrote a letter to the Sports Ministry in which it said that it found no evidence of corruption. The DSS advised the Sports Ministry and the AFN to settle the matter in-house.

Ibrahim Gusau admitted that the money from Puma was paid into a private bank account, but he said that was because the AFN has no bank account in its name and he denied that the money from Puma was stolen.

Meanwhile, lovers of athletics have been trying to get World Athletics to come out and state which faction is the legitimate faction, but the world governing body has failed to do so. They simply removed the name of Gusau and his secretary general from their website, but they did not state who is the president and secretary general of AFN and the crisis keeps dragging on.

The problem emerged because the board members that impeached Gusau said that they were not aware of the details of the contract with Puma and that Gusau signed the deal alone for his selfish interests. The Gusau faction say this is a lie and that the AFN had signed a deal with a sports marketing company to get sponsors for them and that the Puma deal was a result of the efforts of the sports marketing company.

World Athletics confirms Okowa-led AFN, reject Gusau board

’Tosin Oluwalowo
17 August 2021

We recognised Abuja election, says WA

THE World Athletics has confirmed Tonobok Okowa as the officially recognised President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, The PUNCH exclusively reports.

WA confirmed Okowa’s choice in an email to our correspondent.

“World Athletics has received information from both elections and based on the information provided, we are now working with the board elected in Abuja.

“The meeting in Abuja was attended by the most voting members plus the National Olympic Committee, and is the board with whom the National Olympic Committee dealt with for the purposes of entering its team to the Olympic Games,” WA Head of Communications, Nicole Jeffery, said in a statement sent to The PUNCH.

World Athletics’ declaration puts an end to the leadership crisis that has rocked the AFN since 2019, which led to parallel elections in Abuja and Kebbi on June 14, which produced Okowa and incumbent Gusau as presidents.

Our correspondent further learnt that before the official recognition of Okowa as AFN president by WA, the global athletics body had sent the password for the official email of the federation and correspondence between both bodies to his camp. The Gusau-led group was previously in custody of the password.

WA told our correspondent on June 30 that it revoked the initial access of the email granted to Gusau as standard procedure after the election.
“It is World Athletics’ standard practice to revoke all access at the time of a Member Federation election until the new office-bearers are confirmed. In the case of Nigeria, we are still verifying the information we have received about the two elections,” WA said in the email.

In 2019, former AFN vice president Olamide George led other board members to impeach Gusau (in his first term), but the Abuja High Court and Court of Appeal ruled in Gusau’s favour as president of the country’s athletics body, until WA and Confederation of African Athletics directed that elections must hold latest June 14, where Gusau and Okowa returned as factional presidents.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the WA was yet to recognise any of the factions, with the world body informing our correspondent they were studying the reports from both elections.

While Okowa has continued to enjoy the backing of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, he also led the AFN delegation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Okowa-led AFN also presented Nigeria representatives for the WA U-20 Athletics Championships, which begins in Nairobi Kenya on Wednesday.
