Note...a different name from the one we saw yesterday In brief, this is the faction sponsored by the Sport Ministry Taken with a big pinch of salt. This is just war between the two factions of the AFN. Nothing to see, move along. 1 Like |

Why so much negative news about Nigeria? My years of traveling across Africa and studying various countries in the continent never had Nigeria on the negative side of things as it is now. |
Re: Tokyo Olympics: AFN Denies Contract With Puma by Nobody: 6:01am On Aug 06, 2021 |
san316: The real attraction is money. Being chair of a sporting federation , especially 'lucrative' ones like the AFN can attract cash and other benefits. Hence the split. (And Nigeria is not the only country with such issues. Kenya's football federation once split into two separate organizations) 1 Like |

This is the source of the dispute. Ibrahim Gusau was the president of the AFN. However, some members of the board said that they had impeached him. Gusau insisted that he had not been impeached. The members that claimed that they had impeached Gusau held an election in Abuja. This election was backed by the Sports Ministry and the Delta State Sports Commission Chairman, Tonobok Okowa, was elected president of the AFN. Meanwhile, the Gusau faction also held an election in Birnin Kebbi and Gusau was re-elected president in that election. The Gusau faction of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria signed a sponsorship deal with Puma at the 2019 World Championship in Doha, Qatar. This deal is one of the major reasons for the impeachment and dispute. The Okowa Faction of the AFN, along with the Sports Ministry, claimed that the details of the sponsorship contract were not made public. They also accused the Gusau led faction of corruption. They said that the faction deposited the money from the sponsorship deal in a private account. The Sports Ministry petitioned the DSS to investigate the Gusau faction and Ibrahim Gusau was invited to see the DSS. However, the DSS later wrote a letter to the Sports Ministry in which it said that it found no evidence of corruption. The DSS advised the Sports Ministry and the AFN to settle the matter in-house. https://punchng.com/puma-2-67m-scandal-new-twist-as-okowa-led-afn-engages-gusau-on-kits/ Ibrahim Gusau admitted that the money from Puma was paid into a private bank account, but he said that was because the AFN has no bank account in its name and he denied that the money from Puma was stolen. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/gusau-why-afn-puma-money-was-paid-into-a-private-account/ Meanwhile, lovers of athletics have been trying to get World Athletics to come out and state which faction is the legitimate faction, but the world governing body has failed to do so. They simply removed the name of Gusau and his secretary general from their website, but they did not state who is the president and secretary general of AFN and the crisis keeps dragging on. https://www.completesports.com/world-athletics-rejects-gusau-removes-his-name-from-afn-profile-page/ 4 Likes 1 Share |

Re: Tokyo Olympics: AFN Denies Contract With Puma by naptu2: 6:38am On Aug 06, 2021 |
LOOTERSMUSTBEJA: They didn't wear Puma kits and that's why Puma is suing them. They wore AFA kits. Puma wouldn't have been suing them if they wore Puma kits. naptu2:

Which one be not aware. Did they sign contract or did they not sign contract? |
Re: Tokyo Olympics: AFN Denies Contract With Puma by naptu2: 6:43am On Aug 06, 2021 |
Someone7: naptu2: The Sports Ministry and the Okowa Faction do not recognise the Puma contract and they ordered the athletes to wear AFA kits at the Olympics. AFA is a Nigerian sports kit company that has a deal with the Nigerian Olympic Committee. Puma has now sued the AFN because Nigerian athletes wore AFA kits at the Olympics instead of Puma. |

naptu2: This is a big dent on Nigeria’s image. Both factions should’ve settled this problem last year and focus on sports development. One question…what happened to the kits supplied? Did AFA sports kits company not supply the athletes with enough kits? |

This is clearly the greed of unpatriotic Nigerians. I cannot blame the minister, he wanted things to be done properly, but criminals at AFN will not let it be. For goodness sake, why are there factions in a professional body such as AFN. Who would the world governing body relate with? They caused the confusion and should be dealt with severely. |
