The best poverty alleviation scheme is simply fast economic growth combined with bountiful job creation.

This is what China used to lift over 400m out of poverty over a 40 year period

China went from being a desperately poor country to an upper middle income country within 40 years. The country now claims to have eradicated extreme poverty

To achieve same, government should introduce economic policies that will produce 8%+ yearly economic growth rates.

Where fast economic growth rates fails to produce enough jobs for those entering the employment market yearly, policies will need to be tweaked to encourage job-intensive growth.

Everything you said must start from the Local Governments which will create jobs in accordance with the comparative advantage they may possess, China did not start its common prosperity in Beijing. Guandong & other provinces grew in accordance with the uniformed policies of the Communist Party. You work & sacrifice for the sake of the nation, we have no love for Nigeria, all men for themselves & we turn around & blame others for our own shortcomings.

Poverty alleviation schemes like increment in the price of cooking gas and electricity tariff. The next poverty alleviation scheme will be removal of fuel subsidy next year.

Those in charge of poverty alleviation programs entice the poor to fill in their data on forms. At the end of the day, the poor gets nothing while their data are used by those in charge to cover up the looting...

While it is true most of these policies had issues, however one of the biggest contributor to the failure to lift people out of poverty is our ever ballooning population. It's surprising the article didn't mention it all.

You didn't add that in addition to above, China was able to achieve such growth due to strong, decisive policies on population control.

We may not take the drastic one-child policy they did, but we need to urgently do something about our population growth.

No matter all the beautiful plans we roll out, as long as an average Nigerian sees nothing wrong in birthing 7 or more children (particularly those at the lower economic strata - no disrespect intended) we are in for a long ride. sad

"But by 2013, poverty in the country had become so serious that about 70 per cent of the population were said to be living below the poverty line"

The Data above shows the hypocrisy of those praising GEJ clueless President regime in power, its a fact that PMB has failed, but the truth is the day Nigerians grow beyond tribal sentiments & religious fanaticism, that's the day Nigeria will occupy its place in the international communities, the class struggle between the rich & poor is the true war in this country not the one cankerous of worms & mumuism they want us to believe.

Meanwhile, when Jonathan left office in 2015, the poverty rate was said to be about 39.1 per cent.

Am sure you intentionally ignored this part of write up.

The opposite of poverty is not wealth but justice. When the poor man cannot get justice then poverty becomes the order of the day. The Nigerian government does not want poverty eradicated from Nigeria. They know what to do but they sure won't do it. The masses came out en mass to speak against police brutality, which the political elites use to intimidate the citizens of the country and the true owners of the government but to secure their power which was threatened but such actions they unleashed the armed forces on the people. No body is going to give you justice in life. If you want justice then you should be willing to rise up and fight for it.

If am to reply about Nigeria's problems I can write a book base on the topic of discussion, what a big shame that since 1999 uptill now the poverty is just increasing it hasn't come to a meaningful level, the biggest in West Africa it's a pity, I keep saying this the big politicians in general are just focus on what they will get in their pocket, sometimes when the boss releases funds for projects or empowerment for example the ones in the middle and the last are the parasite it's like in a business company u have the top middle and low level management CEO, MD, D, LABOURERS, money is release from top but the average person and the village or low individual doesn't benefit from it which is the highest percentage from which d poverty is, not to talk of other stealing there and there from the men, contracts given out later the work get abandoned,or do we talk about the corruption or bribe, or funds signed by the presido to give out for youth empowerment the once in the middle benefit from it they either pack more than half to themselves or put their family members that don't need or both e.g the recently nirsal, 96% of the politicians in this country have the Same mindset, angry angry angryI don tire for this country I swear, COUNTRY NO BALANCE [CNB]. angry AT ALL

Until the people let that wind of revolution blow through them and through Aso rock, Nigeria will remain its lawless, third world definition.

This country was put into the ground in 1986 by IBB.
Since then, it's been on a gear 5 downward spiral with same negative news daily.

Nothing will ever change until the end of time.
Sad but true.

There's nothing like poverty alleviation program in Nigeria.
Any of such is an avenue for the serial looters in power to loot. In case you wonder why government come up with such programmes to distribute money to the masses, and yet end up killing startups with tax and heavy levies, the reason is simply because the politicians already have their looting plans for those cash meant to be distributed.
The only poverty alleviation program that's going to work in this nation is providing ease of business, good roads, constant electricity supply, quality social amenities and tax alleviation. Any other thing is nonsense
Good point made read my post please smiley, CNB

Another scam is the school feeding program where the supervisors pocket the cash and cook trash for the students.
