Lets face facts here, nobody is saying Akala does not inflate contracts awarded, like the N20 million Naira spent on/per " poo-holes" in Ibadan but one thing I would give him thumbs up for is he did not put the state in serious debt. He spent what was giving him with reckless abandoned but did not go "a borrowing" to spend what he does not have, that I call greed. At the last count, Gbenga Daniel's Ogun State is owing N49 Billion and nothing on the ground to show, haba Mallam Shekarau of Kano is owing N110 Billion and nothing to show too. This was a man who had only N100,000.00 in his account when he first ran for office. No wonder he fell out " Buhari" Ole jati jati- bloooody thief. Fashola N154 Billion at least we are seeing the money spent albeit it at a very high and inflated rate. Does Lagos really have to borrow? Governor Oni of Ekiti State gave out spurious contracts worth over N5 billion, I am not too sure wether it was borrowed money or the state money. There are others, can you guys on Nairaland furnish us with the other debtors leaving power, at times I wonder why would any sensible credit institution borrow a broke and poor state like Ogun State N49 Billion that is almost £400 million pounds. |

With what I've seen, Akala has done what he is capable of doing in Oyo state. Compared to those that have governed the state in the past. Let know focus on how the new regime with it's vision will move the state to greater heights. |

Ogun state isnt poor, its only being mismanaged. Its currently more industrialized dn any onyher SW state except lagos. Property and real estate is appreciating fast just as d population is faster developing dn other SW states. All due to r position in closest proximity to Lagos, thus serving as receptacle to d socio economic overflow. |

First, Lagos is not N154 billion in debt. It is N124. Second, no one has to borrow in life. . . but this limits whats you can accomplish and how quickly you can grow. |

Yeah, I got the Lagos figure wrong, but I knew it was above 100 billion Naira, I just use that figure figuratively, it makes no difference thus, it is still a huge sum. 1 Like |

Gbenga Daniel is thief of "epic proportions", this is a man whose hand is permanently stuck in the cookie jar. How do any sane man explain how he blew N49 Billion on thin air. I cannot recollect the FG holding Ogun's monthly allocation throughout the rein of this ruthless rogue and shady character. Akala is a spendthrift("of the Barkin Zuwo stork"he mismanaged the funds at his disposal, do we blame an incompetent man at the helms of affair of a state or the man who imposed him on Oyo State, I think OBJ should take the flak of whatever happened in Oyo State. 1 Like |

I think most people don't really understand why Akala seemed so demonized in Ibadan. Rather than fiscal policies (though quite a few seemed bad) and the supposed inflation of contracts, his problem was based on 2 major issues 1st was his flamboyance - a 60 year old carrying designer canes, wearing ankle chains, bracelets left and right and there was the claimed "bleaching". Most saw him as loud, crass and irresponsible and if you ever heard him laugh, na wa! But these things were his choice and I could not see myself judging him over such - to each his own. 2nd and definitely bad, was the takeover of the State by NURTW and allied thugs. I am certain thousands died & I believe it was this that showed him the way out of Agodi Government house. Nobody felt safe as if you were unlucky enough to have them hit your vehicle in traffic, you could end up a dead statistic on the spot - it was that bad. I prefer not to describe the day they came to the high court beside my home. It was terrible! Eleweomo & co "owned" town and everyone suffered for it. For allowing them such free rein, Akala became hated & lost his mandate. Other issues remain but the above stand out 1 Like |

Rather than fiscal policies (though quite a few seemed bad) and the supposed inflation of contracts, his problem was based on 2 major issues But having said all that, he gave Oyo State and Ogbomosho in particular one of the best teaching hospitals in the SW Region. Lautech University Teaching Hospital, he spent some serious dough on that facility. He renovated the acclaimed Mapo Hall, I mean all in all we have to give him his dues, the state remains indebted to no one( so he said and if confirmed, kudos to him). |

@knowall, u got me wrong. i am not making case for OGD nor his ways, rather i gave some economic strenghts of d state to correct ur earlier allusion of d state to be poor in ur originaal post. also, its not too much a debt for ogun state economic strenght at N45b, only issue is dt it wasnt judiciously used. the state will get out of it, but it should only hav been there for tangible reasons. ogun state is one of d fastest developing state non oil economies presently. what it needs most is a disciplined and focused leadership |

What is YOUR criteria for best teaching hospital? I hope its not the amount claimed to have been spent that you're considering? Come to Ibadan - I doubt if people wouldn't prefer their dead children back rather than acclaimed "zero" debt. By the way, I know him personally & he's a nice friendly man. But here, I saw too many weep for their lost ones and all for what - assertion of power 1 Like |

I would seriously find the prospect of holding court for OGD on his alleged borrowing of an extra N49 Billion to line his pocket a difficult one to swallow and defend irrespective of the financial and potential capabilities of Ogun State. Especially after nothing can be reasonably be identified as an accomplishment warranting such a huge debt-burden to the state. I wouldn't have minded if he only misappropriated funds given to him unwisely but to go and borrow is like adding salt to an injury. |

Knowall is a very funny person, you castigate Fashola, yet you are understanding of Akala. Akala was a disaster in Oyo state, the state regressed during his tenure, the teaching hospital you are talking about was given to his son in law who knew absolutely nothing, he did nothing in Ibadan, at least some governors will still do something in their capitals, he did absolutely NOTHING. 1 Like |

I am not praising Akala, you need to read through my post again. I heard from reliable source that Lautech Teaching Hospital is one of the best in the state, OBVIOUSLY this project cost Oyo State Billions of Naira, inflated of course " Akala Style" but he did not go "a borrowing" to achieve this feat like some of our over-celebrated Governors you mentioned. Akala is like a Carpenter asked to perform a surgery, obviously he would be out of his depth like anyone would expect but can that be said of those highly educated ones who are sophisticated and clandestine in their thievery- NO. I Can imagine a converstaion between Akala and OGD Going as thus: OGD: You know you can borrow N50 Billion Naira if you so wish !! Akala: Oh mean e( You don't mean it) don't U think one would be playing with prison to embark on such a weired proposition, OGD: When never you need the money we can arrange it for you, obviously in connivance with some very close friends of mine- Bankers. Akala: Do you know the money I am getting from the Federation account, I cannot explain with facts and figures of how I spent it, how much more a loan OGD: just let me know when u are intrested, there is nothing coming from the sky that the ground cannot take, Akala: Don't worry I would get in touch with u If I win my second term, And we all know what happened, as providence would have it, Akala lost his re-election. |

Do not mind Knowall, a governor who has not done anything and keeps spending moneyis expected to be indebted abi, the road done in my area is far longer than the one done in the whole of oyo state by Akala, his son in law built a teaching hospital in Ogbomoso and that is the only achievement in 4 years when Fashola built far far better hospitals in each of the local governments in Lagos. |

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=421024&page=42 This sub-urban train running from Accra- Tema(a distance of about 35 miles) cost the Ghanian Goverment $35 million Dollars, How much is the Ojo -Marina line costing Lagos State Goverment- $500 million dollars. I am not glorifying Akala's reign, I am only saying the guy said he left no debt for the in-coming Goverment. It remains for the in-coming Goverment to refute his claim. How do we reconcile Fashola's deceit over an inflated and bloated contract with those of Akala, are they not birds of the same feather the only difference is Fashola is a " lovable rogue" and Akala is not. Are we not talking of the same Fashola that built Lekki at N1 billion per mile, abeg u people let us be objective, You and your dirty mouth! @Knowall, Various discussion groups may have deliberately distanced themselves from the reality that is essential Akala. His boisterous being actually beclouded our better sense of judgement. In righting wrongs, Akala stepped on powerful, entrenched toes and a media-hate campaign ensued. Its either the Olubadan, Alaafin Vs Soun and the rest of them. Secondly, his rabid dog, Dotun Oyelade made nonsense of whatever finer political achievement Akala had. Rigged or not, the election was quite close and as the saying goes, you rig only where you are popular. 1 Like |

Nobody is praising Akala to high heavens, the man did not have any business being a Governor, how many Deputies end up becoming Governor, so he is lucky to get 5 years out of Oyo State. The bottom line is the same vigour and energy we use in critising Akala must be used on others too. Obviously Akala step on toes bigger than himeself when he took on the Obas of Ibadan and Oyo Town and he paid the ultimate price for it and rightly so. 1 Like |

The govt did NOT contribute not provided even the bond/guarantee to the concessionaires. For your information, work stopped sometime ago because of issues of tolling and percentage of work done. KnowAll:He did his best within his ability. He left no debt and the people actually like him.
