Ileke-IdI:

Look okay, someone has to explain why Nigerian men are so disgustingly boisterous.

I've read alot of psychological journal on aggression and how the characteristics may be linked to a chromosomal locus.
i hear ya  wink i think you are trying to kill a fly with a sledgehammer though. me thinks its purely environmental.

@OP,

Isn't this psychological? I think it is. Think about it this way, Nigeria is a very "fast" environment where everything is almost done by the use of force; whether with firearms, fists or shouts which all require aggression of some sort. And so, the under 50s have grown in such ruthless, unruly environment where it has been programmed into most people's brain that aggression is sexy, or a better way of communication.

A lot of Nigerians have mental issues or to put it mildly, psychological behavioural problems. Ask other nationalities about how they view Nigerians. The answers you're most likely to get are quite shocking. But yes, I see most of my country people in those answers.
Re: Why Do Most Nigerians Shout When They Speak? by pleep(m): 8:15pm On May 29, 2011
Yes!!!! This is a huge thing I noticed in nigerians. So many odd behaviors undecided

People in the city are rediculously arogant and unnecacarily loud even indoors angry while people who are from the village or rural areas actually act like normal people.

I think the loudest tribes are the Igbo/youroba while the hausa are almost unnaturally passive.

Friggin weird country grin

On my very infrequent visits to the northern Nigerian cities of Kano, Kaduna and Maiduguri many moons ago, before the cancer of Boko Haram Islamic fundamentalism spread to the area, I was struck by the low, subdued tones with which Hausa people engaged in normal conversation.

The quiet, understated conduct of the Hausas stood in stark contrast to the ear-splitting bellowed volume of "conversation" that I was used to being bombarded with in southern Nigerian cities.   There was, in fact, something almost, well,  British, about the stiff-upper-lip reserve displayed by the Hausas I observed in their homeland, so it is little wonder that Hausa emigrants blend un-noticed into Western society with such ease.

Walking into a post office in Maiduguri during a week-long stay there back then, I was almost relieved to hear a group of men hollering and carrying on in the "usual" African fashion which I had come to expect.  As I drew close enough to distinguish the language the loud men were speaking, it became apparent that they were not Hausa men, but Yorubas, doing what they do best, shouting each other down at full volume, while gesticulating wildly with their arms.

In general Nigerians like to shout. There are exceptions to the rule. Posh and well-educated ones like me, are quite gentlemanly and courteous.

Its the poor riff-raffs that shout like Ileke-Idi

Yoruba is not a language you can speak softly because the language is based on vowel intonation. Yorubas no doubt started this trend in Naija, and other tribes picked it up from them, most likely in Lagos.

Most times, when Yoruba women start discussing, I need ear plugs.

Who taught you linguistics? What is "vowel intonation"? Nothing like that exists. Intonation is a phenomenon that encompasses a whole sentence. Even English, French, German and other European languages are based on intonation. There's no such thing as "vowel intonation". Intonation is a sentential property. If you meant to say that Yoruba is a "tonal" language, which Nigerian language isn't?

@Topic, no be small thing! Can anyone remember watching a Nigerian movie without an angry screaming man in every other scene? But i think it's an African thing because if you think Nigerians are loud, wait till you meet people from Botswana!!! There are some Botswana exchange students in my building now and we recently took a short trip together after which i swore never to appear in public with them again. They were dancing and ululating and making strange noises at the train station as i blushed all the colours of the rainbow and ALL eyes were on us!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!

@poster
true
that realisation startled me years ago
and honestly you cant pin point one particular tribe as being the noisiest
i will say however that the Gwari are the most quiet, you hardly ever hear them raise their voices in conversation
but honestly speaking this trait is just not only a Nigerian thing, kos
i have also found that the Asians are very loud in communication
so are some other countries
i just pin it down to bushness oh

1- Nigeria has a high level of noise pollution - Ppl increase the volume of their TV sets to drown out the noise of the generators but don't turn it down when having a conversation, no distinct separation between residential and commercial areas and so on.

2- Nigerians have a strong mix of passion and frustration - This comes across in our use of wild gestures when we speak.

3- The need to be the Alpha Male/Female - Often with nothing of substance to back it up.

4- Nigerian phone etiquette dictates that "the volume of your voice should be directly proportional to the distance of your listener" FACTtongue.

Then again, I dont think this trait is specific to just Nigeria/Africa, we just do it best embarassed
