me too, fearless energy drink increased price I boycotted them and opted for predator energy drink, Nigerians don't really do brand loyalties once there is a cheaper alternative people would go for that, no one buys sardines these days because it became expensive suddenly, naso e be

Market association everywhere adjust their pieces at same or close range hence consumers are left stranded.

Then again , the options we have are limited, or can you find alternative cement to use in building your house or alternative for agege bread which is the cheapest around or the alternative to cooking gas or petrol.

The inflation hits at fundamental areas that have ripple effect on the others e.g. change in price of cooking gas, petrol, flour, sugar, cement, salt, tomatoes, these items will affect price of food, transport, rent etc.

Nigeria is the only country in the world where a product will jump in price by 50% and sales of that product won't change.

It has made corporations greedy and they milk Nigerians with reckless abandon at the slightest opportunity.

Why can't people just boycott those greedy brands, move to cheaper ones and let it sink in the heads of this corporations that no brand is too big to fail, irrespective of product or distribution network.

As someone that has travelled a lot around Africa,I can boast that Nigeria is the only place where this happens and consumers will show vulnerability and dependency by simply continuing patronage and showing these people that "we don't have a choice".

It really is sad. Nigerians are actually poor. Not just financially but mentally too. That’s why they are able to encourage criminality. Nigerians believe they are showing strength and capabilities by rolling with the “challenges” whereas in most cases, they are just being docile, sheeples if I may. It’s really frustrating that the few voices who dare to dissent are quickly drowned out by those they seek to liberate.

It is because of the 2 stupid religions, Christianity and Islam. The gullible followers of these religions are taught that no matter the level of inflation their sky-daddy will keep them fed. Some of them even turn hunger to fasting and prayer. These two religions have turned Nigerians into zombies.

That’s because we Nigerians lack cooperation to speak in one voice and protest against any kind of extortion, so many of us are too proud to show they can afford it but dying in silent, Imagine the rise in cooking gas supposed to trigger serious protest if we live in a country were people corporate to voice out their grievances.

I ask myself this same question a lot. I've not seen it happen once that commuters, for example, will protest hike in transport fares by trekking and actually showing these danfo buses who's boss.
In America, black people started walking as a form of protest to segregation in buses. Na beg dem beg dem las las to please come back.

You guys just like to heap blames on the average Nigerian. Lots of commuters refuse such hikes in lagos and would rather wait. You definitely don't expect everyone to stick with such refusal. In Lagos for example, the population far outweighs the supply of buses, so you already have an inelastic market and transporters are king. Commuters have little to no leverage because even if 80% decide to trek, the available buses isn't enough to ferry the left over 20%. Heck even such hike in fares happen all over the world especially when there are large events, only challenge is every single day is a large event in Lagos. So you are out of options.

Also we should stop making it seem like Nigerians don't fight back. Let those same countries experience half of what Nigerians go through and see how they respond.

Only scarcity of fuel happened in UK for few weeks. People were hoarding fuel and even fighting at stations. Some even started looting fuel from cars and others were buying at hiked prices.

When the system is rigged against you, you either just flow with it.

For example. Who do your report price gouging to?

How effective are those agencies ?

What processes are in place by gov't to protect consumers against such?

it is because years and decades of consecutive bad Presidents and Governors have destroyed Nigeria so bad that Nigerians have come to accept evil as normal and anybody resisting evil as a mad person.

Years of bad governance have destroyed the psych of majority of Nigerians, they have come to have this natural belief that things can only get worst in Nigeria, so no matter how bad things become, Nigerians accept it cheerfully and take as natural.

Decades of corrupt government have made Nigerians to believe that they don't have any other choice but to accept whatever the society throws at them, so everybody tries to hike the price of whatever he or she is selling as a way of recovering whatever he lost from buying other commodities.

Another reason is the religion factor. Prosperity preachers have changed the mentality of Nigerians so bad, they only focus on miracle wealth so they can afford anything no matter the price as preachers have made them to believe that's the sign of being righteous.

Don't complain, a born again ought not to complain but respect the leaders and pray for blessings

PERFECTLY SAID. WE ARE IN MEGA TROUBLE IF WE CONTINUE THIS WAY.

The thing is not a brand thing.

Check it, when inflation occur it's usually with certain products like pepper, groundnut and palm oil before the whole thing spiral round.

These producers have union that control prices. When inflation occurs, it's affects all the products both high and low brand.

Check when bread priced was increased. Even plantain and onions. All traders were seLling same price that you won't have any option.

It's a Nigerian thing.. That 'i no get choice mentality' (and e terrible) every person selling a thing to you feels there are doing you a favour.. If u no buy 20 other pipo go buy am like dat.... Once I'd wanted to use POS to withdraw some money.. Elderly lady, told me she would charge 200 naira.. I accepted told her i will transfer the money to her.. She told me she would give me a number to call and tell the person am sending money... Then he will confirm when he sees it before she gives me the equivalent amount in cash.. Told her to call the person herself because its supposed to be a part of her business, she said i should call because she is doing me a favour..that if i can't call the person i should go.. Lol.. Sounded truly funny.. Maaami! Doing me which favour? And i will still pay ur 200 naira POS charges...? I told her she wasn't doing me any favour, that am paying for the service. The funny thing was, everybody there started murmuring that i don't have respect, am not greatful and plenty other murmurs... You can imagine the mentality alot of us hold!.. That's why even in leadership, we can never stand with one voice...

Wetin concern southerners with this topic?

Do northerners boycott?

PoliticallyLeft:

You'll be surprised that 80% of Southerners are happy that things are hard in the country even though they are suffering.

If they purchase cheaper substitutes, how will they post on Instagram that they purchased something worth 1000 naira for 2000 naira and blame Buhari? grin

Check any post that criticises the incumbent government, it always goes:

Under Jonathan T was 2 naira , under Buhari it is 5 naira.

They do not ever blame the retailers who are doubling profit.

Put differently, for most of Nigerians inflation is a payback for voting Buhari in 2015 grin.

It is very bad and terrible out here honestly, price hike across a value chain and people keep patronising like nothing happened.
It is making me think that Nigerians are not as poor as they claim, they just want to play pity party.

Majority of Nigerians like forming Rich even when they are being short change.

While you're busy protesting, you will now see like 1 million people ready to pay for that price hike.

Boycott or protest is more expensive than the good and services in Nigeria.
E.g boycott bus because of 50% increase in T-fare and you start to trek with empty stomach on bad road full of frustrated drivers. If you survive hit-and-run driver incident, who pays the expensive hospital bills? You can save yourself the regret by simply sacrificing the extra charge.

https://www.facebook.com/428018987269090/posts/6257671770970420/?app=fbl
Or instead of buying adulterated products that can endanger your life because you are looking for cheaper product, is it not better to stay alive to fight another?
To even lodge complain of fake product to security personnel is more expensive. The highest bidder gets favorable judgement in Nigeria.
Ordinary sit at home in the east, government is killing in response.

Wider audience will get you nothing.

You see, Nigerians worship money and are spendicrafts by nature.

They buy those expensive stuff for several reasons including...

1. To belong in a world of show offs

2. To put themselves on a higher level than their friends and neighbors

3. In a country where fake products is the order of the day we ignorants look to price to give us an idea of quality. This one reason why ridiculously expensive stuff like peak milk will always sell.
