Yes, in most cases it is safe to use hotel showers, however, it is always a good idea to inspect the shower for cleanliness before you use it. You can determine how clean or dirty the shower is by looking at the shower head, handle and knobs.

Look out for rust spots on the faucet handles (especially in older hotels) and mold growing around the seal of the showerhead (or inside of it). If you see any of these signs, do NOT use the hotel shower.

You will also want to check and make sure that all parts of the shower handle work properly. You may not be able to tell if a hotel's hot and cold water knobs actually turn on and off until you try them out yourself.

Also, on the subject of hot and cold knobs, you will want to make sure that the knob turns easily. If it doesn't seem like it's going to turn or if there is a problem with the handle breaking off in your hand when you try using it, DO NOT USE THE HOTEL SHOWER .

In addition to checking for rust and mold, check the shower head to make sure it doesn't have any small holes in it. If you see a hole of any size in the showerhead, do not use that hotel's shower because you don't know what might be on the other side of that hole.

As a last resort, if you really want to use the hotel shower, you could always bring along a pair of rubber gloves and then take showers using that same bare hand. This seems rather unappealing because who really wants to touch their bare skin with dirty hands? It will be much more sanitary if you just don't use the hotel shower and opt for another one instead.

You can also ask to use the hotel's pool or hot tub instead of using their shower. Although it is not as clean, at least you are able to sit in a body of water while cleaning yourself off.

To conclude, always inspect the shower before using it. If you notice any signs of rust, mold or holes in the showerhead, do not use that hotel's shower.
