Today there is pizza in numerous variations, which are particularly adapted to the preferences of the respective country. In the USA, for example, they are the best sellers with particularly thick floors, rich toppings and filled edges. It has been known in the USA since the 19th century.

In the 18th century it was common to use fresh tomato slices, olive oil and the typical Italian herbs oregano and basil as toppings.

The foundation stone for the pizza that is known today is said to have been developed on June 11, 1889 in Naples for King Umberto I and his wife Margherita. It was topped with green basil, white mozzarella and red tomatoes, which corresponds to the national colors of Italy.

This is how the mother of all pizzas, the Margherita, was born. And that is still the basis of numerous pizza variants today.

In addition to the margherita, there are other typical Italian pizza variations. The Napoli, which is topped with anchovies, sometimes with capers and black olives, in addition to tomatoes, mozzarella, olive oil and oregano.

Other toppings used in Italy include garlic, mussels, various seafood, boiled ham, and mushrooms.

The salami that is so popular today can only be found in Italy itself with the typically Italian, very hot salami varieties.

Instead of mozzarella, other types of cheese are also used, including Parmesan , Gorgonzola and Pecorino, collectively known as the quattro formaggi with 4 types of cheese.

Italy is also particularly fond of pizzas with tuna and hot peppers, while the Hawaii variety was probably developed in the USA.

Spices such as oregano, basil, rosemary and also sage are typically Italian. Sage is one of the most exclusive and expensive spices in the world. It is said to have healing powers and is known primarily as a remedy for coughs and sore throats. In addition to its disinfecting properties, it is also said to help with sweats, digestive problems and even infertility.

When cooking and baking, it can be easily combined with cheese, and this spice also goes very well with onions.
