[b]Former Nigeria World Cup skipper Nwankwo Kanu has been appointed a special adviser on sports to newly-elected the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha.

Okorocha announced Kanu’s appointment at a special dinner in honour of the former Arsenal and Inter Milan star, who called time on his international career at the weekend in Lagos.

“The Governor announced Kanu’s appointment at the gala dinner after the testimonial on Saturday,” head of the Kanu Heart Foundation (KHF), Onyebuchi Abia, informed MTNFootball.com

Okorocha was a special guest of honour at the Kanu testimonial.

Kanu, 34, was born in Owerri, capital city of Imo State and played for the state’s top club Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC) before he moved to Europe to pursue a professional career.

Fans and some of Africa’s top stars like Samuel Eto’o Fils, Kolo Toure, ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Rigobert Song, Michael Essien and Emmanuel Adebayor defied the heavy rains Saturday in Lagos to pay tribute to Kanu, who will now focus on his club career as well as his heart foundation. [/b]

I disagree with you. Who is the one person that universal in sports. Kanu fits well as an adviser. As someone that have passed through the sector from ground up. He is in a good position to advice the Governor on the needs at the grassroots.

As for all those saying Papilo is now an APGA member or politician simply for agreeing to contribute his quota in building Imo, let it be known to you all that in Nigeria today, we need apolitical (nonpolitical) technocrats in Government.

While Football and Sports generally differs, I think the appointment of Papillo is a step in the right direction. The truth is Football has more than 80% follower-ship in Nigeria. Athletics has less than 10%. Other sporting activities may take up the remaining 5%.
Kanu's appointment is sound because he can interface with big clubs in Europe for screening and subsequent contracts for talents in Imo state. If he was able to get hi younger brother a club then he can equally do it for other budding youngsters.
Again, Kanu from experience know the bureaucratic bottlenecks involved with LOC and will be in a better position to advice the government on it.
