Why did the apostles baptise with water?

Good question. They were still growing in knowledge. It was Apostle Paul who later grasped the understanding of the doctrine of baptism. He said;

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, ONE BAPTISM, (Ephesians 4:4-5).

After over 17 years of ministry, he said he said he only baptized a few people among thousands of converts he had probably won. He even said Christ did not send him to baptize. Read that narration below;

1Corinthians 1:14-17
14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Our Lord Jesus cannot give the instruction to church to baptize with water and give a contrary instruction to Apostle Paul who wrote about half of the books in the New Testament.

There is one baptism. It was done with water during the ministry of John the Baptist but now it is been done by a more perfect means, the Holy Spirit.

John prophesied about it;

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (Matthew 3:11)

John in the passage above said he does his baptism with water but Jesus will do his with the Holy Spirit.

Even our Lord Jesus said the same thing to his disciples before his ascension;

For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. (Acts 1:5) .

He said John baptized with water but his disciples will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. So, the church is not supposed to duplicate baptism. There is one baptism and it is now the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

By water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

John 3:4-5 (KJV) Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Jesus Christ never said anything of the Holy Spirit there in that passage which you quoted. So why do you assume water baptism to be of the Holy Spirit? undecided

1. Have you been baptised by water immersion in the name of Jesus? If yes, have you received the Holy Ghost?

2. If no, are you ready to be baptised now? Once you're baptised, I'll pray for you to receive the Holy Ghost and once it comes upon you, YOU ARE BORN AGAIN because you have become born of the water (baptism) and of the spirit (The filling of the Holy Ghost)

Now go and model Christ, be beautiful for Christ, be free, live a life of power and authority, heal the sick, cast out demons. These are the duties of a born again christian
Also, Jesus Christ never said baptism had to be of immersion either. In Ezekiel 36 vs 25 - 33, where God spoke to us of what was to come, He, God, said He would sprinkle water on His own .. so why do you declare it is by immersion, suggesting that God is wrong? undecided

2. Another thing, if you carefully examine what Jesus Christ did in fact say of how to become born again.. you would note that from John 3 vs 1 - 21 , one has to

■ Believe in Jesus Christ
▪︎ acquire eternal life through eating of the body and drinking of blood of Jesus Christ- John 6 vs 47 - 58
■ Be born of water
▪︎ Repent or change from following the Old way of living to following the New Covenant by submitting to and obeying the teachings and commandments of Jesus Christ. - Matthew 3 vs 7 - 11
▪︎ be baptized in water to show that one has made the change
■ be born from Spirit - God installs a new spirit inside of those who are born from spirit- Ezekiel 36 vs 25

Matthew 3 and John 1 were talking about John the Baptist talking about how he knew Jesus was the Christ.

Matthew 2 vs 38: Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Matthew 2 vs 41: Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls
Acts ch 8 vs 35 - 38: Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him
Acts 10 vs 45 - 48: The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the holy Spirit should have been poured out on the Gentiles also, 46 for they could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter responded, 47 “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people, who have received the holy Spirit even as we have?” 48 He ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

There is baptism by water and baptism by the Holy Ghost, usually the baptism by the Holy Ghost always comes after the baptism by water but in Acts ch 8, baptism by the Holy Ghost came first to prove that the gentiles can receive the Holy Ghost as well.

If you choose to be a soldier of the cross without the promises of the new testament, you are OYO.
Grace can cover you in the event that you are in a circumstance where you cannot be baptised, but if you know and refuse to be baptised, goodluck!
Acts 1:4-5
4And while they were gathered together, He commanded them:
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss.
5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit
.

John 14:26
But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf],
He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.

Acts 11:15-16
15As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, just as He had fallen upon us at the beginning.
16Then I remembered the word of the Lord, as He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

Of course, there is baptism by water (i.e. operating under the law) and baptism by the Holy Ghost, just as there is physical circumcision (i.e. operating under the law) and spiritual circumcision. I know which ones are better, loll.

Matthew 2 vs 38 is totally and theologically wrong because the cancellation of sin, is not done in the name of Jesus, but rather remission of sin happened on the basis of the shedding of Jesus' blood.

Now watch this, if Jesus clearly stated Holy Spirit baptism in Acts 1:5 seen up there, on whose authority is Apostle Peter gone to say water baptism in Acts 2:38 gives remission of sins, when I John 1:7 clearly says 'and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin [by erasing the stain of sin, keeping us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations].' and Hebrews 9:22b supports that truth by saying 'without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness [neither release from sin and its guilt, nor cancellation of the merited punishment].'

Equally why would Philip, the Apostle, also slip on this theological banana skin of operating under the law, by carrying out water baptism for the Ethiopian eunuch? It simply is because of Acts 2:42, that is they continually and faithfully devoting themselves to the doctrine and instruction of the apostles, and not of the instruction of Jesus. They were operating under the law. Smh.

Jesus, in Acts 1:5, said Holy Spirit baptism but Apostle Peter, in Acts 2:38, drifts away from Jesus expressed instruction, about Holy Spirit baptism, to go prescribe to water baptism (i.e. Acts 10:47–48)

Apostle Philip too, succumbed to pressure to facilitate water baptism against Jesus' expressed order of Holy Spirit baptism. They were operating under the law. Smh.

It wasnt until Acts 11:16, that Apostle Peter came to himself, which is, at the point when John 14:26 got fulfilled. It's at Acts 11:16, that Apostle Peter remembered that, its actually Holy Spirit baptism what Jesus taught them and not water baptism (i.e. Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’)

Apostle Paul, because of the at Acts 19:4-5, made a u-turn departure from operating under the law, with at I Corinthians 1:14, literally saying:
'I thank God I didnt water baptized any of you'

Again, God Himself decreed from the time or Abraham that the one He sent to the Descendants of Abraham, He would use to bless the nations with. So, yes, Jesus Christ was indeed promised and sent to the Lost sheep of Israel, just as He declared. And He was promised by God to bless the nations of the world as well. undecided

Now the same Jesus Christ, who said He was sent to the Lost sheep of Israel, is also recorded to have taught several times of Gentiles gathering at the same table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(Israel) in God's Kingdom - Matthew 8 vs 5 - 13 is one such place - the same Kingdom which He brought down to the Lost sheep of Israel. undecided

So yes, the very same Jesus Christ also welcomed the Gentiles into the Kingdom of God by sending His very own disciples, God's workers,into the world , to teach the New Covenant agreement which He brought,to all who will accept Him. undecided

It is OK if you chose to believ Jesus Christ was being double-mouthed by that. undecided

Lol, so the apostles were wrong by baptising with water and you are the right one...

Where in the old testament was water baptism carried out?
Water baptism started with John the baptist which was a fore-runner of Christ so where is the law in that? Moses was the law giver, where did Moses baptise with water?

In the time of the apostles, some people still baptised unto John's baptism and needed to be re-baptised in Jesus's name. After the apostles baptised with water, the baptism of the Holy Ghost follows.

Its our job to baptise with water, its the job of Jesus to baptise us with the Holy Ghose and fire.

After over 17 years of ministry, he said he said he only baptized a few people among thousands of converts he had probably won. He even said Christ did not send him to baptize. Read that narration below;

1Corinthians 1:14-17
14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

John prophesied about it;

Even our Lord Jesus said the same thing to his disciples before his ascension;

There is one body: The body of Christ is one, we are all heirs of the father, the bride not brides.

and one Spirit:: The only Spirit God gives us is the Holy Spirit, that one Spirit can manifest any gift or change in the life of an individual. There cant be 2 HolySpirit in an individual, only demons do that.

even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord: Our God is one, we dont worship anyone not even the highest angels or creatures

one faith: Our faith and doctrine is one, anything that deviates from that is false

ONE BAPTISM, (Ephesians 4:4-5):
Acts 19:3-5 (KJV) And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
Then said Paul
, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Interestingly, there's another baptism mentioned in this same chapter by the same Apostle Paul

Acts 19:6-7 (KJV) And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
And all the men were about twelve.

What does this chapter mean by saying that they were baptised in the name of Jesus?

In 1Chor Apostle Paul was settling a quarrel in the church where the church split into 4 factions ( Paul, Apollos, Cephas and Christ)

1 Corinthians 1:11-17 (KJV) For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Paul himself admitted to baptising Crispus, Gaius and the household of Stephanas. So if God told Paul not to baptise, by the higjlighted here and the text in Acts 19 vs 6 - 7 does it not show that Paul practised water baptism in the name of Jesus?

Being born of tbe water there is: Water baptism, Being born of the Spirit there is: Baptism of the Holy Ghost

The 2 work together.
But this isn't what Jesus Christ said.. undecided
5 Jesus answered, “Believe me when I say that everyone must be born from water and the Spirit. Anyone who is not born from water and the Spirit cannot enter God’s kingdom.
6 The only life people get from their human parents is physical. But the new life that the Spirit gives a person is spiritual.
7 Don’t be surprised that I told you, ‘You must be born again.’
8 The wind blows wherever it wants to. You hear it, but you don’t know where it is coming from or where it is going. It is the same with everyone who is born from the Spirit. - John 3 vs 5 - 8
There is no indication that the Holy Spirit is involved in that at all. And if you read closely Ezekiel 36 vs 25 - 27, you wil see that God made clear what would take place When one is born of Spirit, same thing Jesus Christ teaches here in the above passage...a new birth of the Spirit kind. undecided

Recall, the reason Jesus Christ gave as far as being born-again, it is in order that one gain access, through a door/gate, into the Kingdom of God. undecided

There are two doors into the Kingdom of God - Matthew 7 vs 13 - 14
● the broad Gate which leads to destruction
● the narrow Gate which leaders to true life.

And Jesus Christ admonished us to ensure we enter in through the narrow Gate - Luke 13 vs 22 - 30. undecided

That spirit Jesus was talking about is the Holy Spirit

1 John 5:4-8 (KJV) For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

On earth here, the water, the blood and the spirit bear witness. The water spoken of is not the water of the word but water baptism.
The blood of Jesus was shed on this earth 2022 years ago on the cross so that also speaks.
The Spirit (The Holy Spirit) in a Christian speaks too .

When you as a Christian has been baptised in the name of Jesus, the water has borne witness of you
The blood of Jesus in who you were baptised bears witness as well.
When you step out of the water, you are prayed for and the Holy Spirit comes upon you, this Spirit also bears witness to heaven of you.

Let me give examples of how these can bear witness.
When the devil comes to strike u maybe through ancestral curses or evil inheritances, the water testifies that you have been buried and that old lineage is dead.
When the devil tries to strike you through your sin, the blood of Jesus bears witness that Jesus has paid for that sin.
When you are binding the devil and the devil tries to challenge your authority to command him, the Holy spirit bears witness that He is inside you and its by His authority that you are comanding.

Jesus commanded His disciples to baptise whoever believes and the disciples baptised with water so which other water was Jesus talking about?

There is no indication that the Holy Spirit is involved in that at all.

Which Spirit was Jesus talking about
