he Presidency has aborted a scheduled meeting between the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, and commissioners of police, assistant inspectors-general of police and deputy inspectors-general of police in Abuja.


THE PUNCH learnt that shortly before the meeting, the IG was summoned to the Presidential Villa for a discussion with the National Security Adviser, Gen. Owoye Azazi (retd.).


No reason was given for the Presidency‘s action.


The sudden invitation of the IG fuelled rumours that he had either been sacked or asked to resign over the wave of killings of policemen in some Northern cities by members of the outlawed Islamic sect, Boko Haram.


A powerful bomb ripped through the car park of the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja last Thursday, a day after Ringim returned to the federal capital from the main area of attacks on policemen, Maiduguri, the Borno State capital (North-East Nigeria), and declared that Boko Haram‘s days were numbered.


About eight persons were said to have died in the blast, which also destroyed 77 cars.


Seven policemen were killed in attacks on police stations in Borno and Katsina states on Friday and Monday respectively by suspected Boko Haram members.
