Hello Nairalandlers.

I'm asking for a friend, as a student living in a rented apartment in Nsukka where the landlord and his family are also living there, now the issue is that my friend does not know what she did to her landlady who confronted her saying she shouldn't exchange any form of placentaries ( greetings) with her. To the best of my knowledge there hasn't been any record of quarrel between them.

Nb: the landlady loves it whenever you're traveling or going out, you have to tell her and this my friend don't have the stomach for such familiarities.

Nairalandlers should she continue to greet the landlady or be on her own.
Please your advice is needed thank you.

Maybe she caught Mr Landlady eyeing that coochie already

He said it was a typo, though there's no autocorrect word such as that... but he is a quick learner and has corrected it by now.

Are you a new grammar Nazi? Miss them.

If you are not comfortable in somebody's house, calmly pack out when your rent expires.
I don't pay more than one year rent at a time. Would have been paying for six months if possible. You can't give me headache when I have a choice.

This is one of the reasons naija should switch to monthly rent. It'd benefit both the landlord and the tenants.

Imagine a country like Togo adopting such system whilst we here screaming giant of Africa.

One Month rent, two weeks deposit, two weeks notice before moving out or stand a chance of losing your deposit.

With such system in place, a lot would change positively.

I have to trust him on that.

But the IELTS are not really useful in a country where everyone speaks English. I was disoriented reading what an American and Brit wrote. I think this guy is as good as they are. As such IELTS should be abolished!

So the I see the IELTS as a means of screening those who plan on migrating to the countries that require it. Think about it like a recruitment. Most businesses insist that only people with 2.1 and above apply. It serves to reduce the pool so that filtering from that pool is a bit easier. Most people complain about IELTS because it's expensive. If it was free and all they had to do was pass, no one would complain. And yes that registration fee is a means of reducing the numbers that plan to migrate to those countries.

True. ±

If they are serious about it, though, they ought to keep it strictly on spoken tests. Because that's why we have that type of typo.

Remember that people planning to migrate would need to work in a proper professional setting to sustain themselves abroad. That means they would need to know how to write proper professional emails that can be easily understood by others. I have seen all manner of rubbish written by people from a our climes who claim to have a good grasp of English because they were educated in pseudo-English (Nigerian English).

The most horrible I have seen is:

"Are my to inform him of the meeting?"
"I didn't know we where to make a reservation"

And the really outright ugly.

"Please, kindly close the door".

While I'm not sure if this last example is grammatically incorrect, the word "kindly" is so antiquated in modern British and American English that Americans now associate any communication that includes "kindly" as potential fraud.

We NEED to be examined in both written and spoken English

I'm not by this insinuating that I am flawless in my use of English o. Heck I'm prone to mistakes in the language. And I am very open to being examined on it either through IELTS or any other test of English.

Don't mind me. I have my own "kolo" issues

Those buildings were poorly constructed.

Back then when i was still in school i used to ask myself what kind of heartless contractor built the Zik flats.I never entered any of those building then for fear of collapse.

Onuiyi is very likely to have such dramatic landladies.

If she can endure till her rent elapse then she should before getting another apartment elsewhere. But if she has the means she should move out ASAP. To forewarned is to be forearmed... No be so them talk am?

As for the greetings she should stop. There's no need

Are my to take these you're submission serious? grin

I'll admit to that kindly being one of my peeves. And that people need to quit the antiquated letter writing indentations etc.

Overall, I think Nigerians do well with grovelling rubber stamped emails/letters. That is letters that don't need creativity and are constantly humbly requesting this or that. The main problem is that they never pay attention to what they are being taught. They all follow one pattern, good or bad. If you send in something, you see everyone copying it. I still think they aren't that bad they need IELTS. Just spoken tests. They can copy the right way to do mail when they get in.

However...

Isn't it in Nigeria that people write kneels instead of knees with such boldness? "A advice"? I'm not a grammar Nazi, so I'm going to keep shut on it... But I feel it's the pronunciation that causes that problem.

We are all bound to make mistakes, though. Even native speakers, otherwise English classes would've had much better grades. Plus I feel I'm that terrible at foreign languages.

It isn't kolo issues. It's observations on happenings in the language sphere.

Please your advice is needed thank you.

I will advise your friend as follows:

1.) By all means, avoid quarrelling with her;
2.) Never be careless with your place or things in that compound;
2.) Plan to pack out asap.

My reason is that I know someone back then in school who's landlady used to behave in a similar way to what you've described here. So one day they had an altercation, and then the landlady saw it as an excuse to carry out her wicked plan. She reported the babe to her mammewater gang, presenting the altercation as a reason why they should punish the little girl. The babe ended up suffering unduly for it.

In a nutshell, let your friend avoid her landlady by all means.
