French President Emmanuel Macron called for restraint in both words and actions in dealing with the Ukraine conflict, after U.S. President Joe Biden described Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "butcher" and said he should not remain in power.

"I wouldn't use this type of wording because I continue to hold discussions with President Putin," Macron said on France 3 TV channel.

Biden, speaking in Warsaw, had said that Putin "cannot remain in power". A White House official later said Biden's remarks did not represent a shift in Washington's policy and were meant to prepare the world's democracies for an extended conflict, not back regime change in Russia. read more

"We want to stop the war that Russia has launched in Ukraine without escalation -- that's the objective," Macron said on France 3 TV, noting the objective was to obtain a cease fire and the withdrawal of troops through diplomatic means.

"If this is what we want to do, we should not escalate things -- neither with words nor actions," he said.

The French president on Friday had said he was seeking to hold more talks with President Putin in the coming days regarding the situation in Ukraine as well as an initiative to help people leave the besieged city of Mariupol.

President Putin sent his troops into Ukraine on what he calls a "special military operation" to demilitarise and "denazify" Ukraine. Ukraine and the West say Putin launched an unprovoked war of aggression.

Far-right French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said she backed Macron's approach.

"Obviously, those are words that add oil to the fire," she said, when asked about Biden's comment.

"The fact that the president of the Republic is not entering into this escalation is a good thing," she said, speaking on France 3 in a pre-recorded interview that was broadcast on Sunday.

If Macron was the president of USA, or France was world power this conflict would've been 100% avoided. Joe is just a sleepy, floppy, deluded old man who only cares about his sleep and nothing else.

I guess the European countries are beginning to take note of Biden's choice of words. While countries like France and Germany are still talking to Putin, to try and de escalate the situation, old man Biden has called Putin 'a war criminal', 'a butcher' and now he has openly called for regime change in Russia.

Isn't it obvious that the US is adding fuel to fire in this crisis now. And they are doing this for selfish interest.
If Biden continue along this path of making it difficult for France and Germany to de escalate this crisis, I see a situation where they will abandon the sanctions placed on Russia. The sanctions are biting all of them anyway.

As long as Russia can continue to avoid huge loss of civilians lives. I believe one of the reasons Russia does not want to invade Kiev and other major cities anymore,is that it would result in huge loss of civilians lives. This would give their enemies weapons to use against them, when you consider the fact that they, the western media control the narratives of this war.

You can imagine the outrage, headlines like 'RUSSIAN BOMB KILLS 2000 CIVILIANS IN KIEV' would generate across the world.
Putin is aware that's what the US and their allies want him to do, that's why they continue to taunt him that he has not taken any major city.

The invasion of Ukraine in itself is bad enough, I don't think Putin wants to cause more problems for Russia, by invading Kiev. He can find a way to justify what he's doing in Donbas, but their can never be any justification for invading Kiev.

That's a trap I'm not sure he'll fall into, because at the point where you have bombs killing like 2000 civilians in Kiev, even countries that are neutral now will have no choice than to distance them self from Russia.

Putin may be anything they call him, but he's nobody's fool.

Truth is, If five USSR countries all agree to join NATO at the same time, Putin will not have the personnel and equipment to attack all five of them at the same time talkless of attacking NATO.
