This is one of the many backwardness religion has caused. Rather that critically thinking to solve the simplest of problems, we are made to see sky daddy as the only peerson with the power to solve problems
Also imagine many doctors, engineers, mathematicians, professionals, professors, I.T guru, etc who invested heavily in acquiring knowledge from higher institution of learning dumping thier knowledge to take up pastoral job where the only thing they will be doing thier is just reading, interpreting and possibly deceiving the gullible. How are such people going to be useful to the society. Some kind of mindset will be that let me just acquire certificate, then I will take over my fathers church. . Nowadays all you need to do is just acquire certificate, be able to speak one kind of english, then go and open a church. The process continues. Some Nigeria G.Os are professor of mathematics, doctors, etc.. they dont know they are useless. Who religion help.?

I want to make my contribution based on my limited education and how what I encountered shape my opinion on issues. Op thinks standard of education is falling, but it is an erroneous belief by many.

Decades ago I used to read this page from daily times.it was about event in history,a flash back and reprint to articles written years ago that falls on that day. On this particular day that I can't remember the year,it was about falling standard of education in Nigeria of 1930s

That falling standard produced Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka etc and still producing internationally recognized innovators, inventors and top notch teachers for European and American institutions

Survey may conclude mass of students to be unserious but despite the hunger wey dey, those wey dey learn dey learn

Of course, the standard is dropping gradually. It can't fall in one day but it would drop from generation to generation.

Those who went to school during colonialism, ironically got better so called education. Why? Because they heard from the horses mouth- they learned directly from white people the owners of the education. And almost all of them went for further studies in Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, depending on the nation of colonial master.

Remember, they were few of them.

Then we had independence and those few became the instructors themselves who taught the rest of the continent.

So they got the original copy from white people- and passed it to the next generation of Africans- who in turn passed it to others. And so on.

Here's what everybody needs to understand......

That copy from white people is the original copy. Just like you have the original copy of a document. But the more you photocopy the document (pass it to another generation) and photocopy and photocopy and photocopy and photocopy, etc, etc, it would keep losing print quality because you're printing from a photocopy of a photocopy, not from the original copy. I hope someone would understand what I just said.

That's why the standard of education must fall from generation to generation because it was never our's.

In 30 years in future, you could read another article saying that standard of education in 2022 was better because the standard would continue to drop from generation to generation. So many books I read in primary school is now read in secondary school. Those I read in secondary school are now used in the university.

The solution (which everybody is either scared or ignorant to talk about) is replace the Western education with a system running on African epistemological philosophy. That includes doing it in our own native language. It won't lose value as much when we become the originators and creators of what we learn.

As much as I would like to side with the writer, I still think a lot has to do with the educational system itself.
Imagine a Prof. still lecturing with a note of 2010 no addition, no subtraction. Same content recycled for every sets or the lecturers not updating their knowledge on latest trends and technology.

I'm an I.T graduate. I could remember during my seminar defense, I was to do my presentation on Nano technology while my friend was to do on Blockchain. On that day, his supervisor told him to go and rest that he has no idea or knowledge about his topic and gave him a C, mine told me to change my topic and come back for presentation. I chose Cross platform development (worst mistake) during my presentation an argument ensued about a particular concept, out of the heat of the argument, I told him to use google (Omo worst mistake ever). He started giving several histories of himself (you know how Nigerian lecturers brag), and so much talk. I apologized immediately and even went to his office to see him to make sure we are cool (don't want any extra year). Last last, he gave me a B. He said I'm proving too smart. I just laughed it off. I did sleepless night to complete that seminar paper but what do I know. You can't question a Nigerian lecturer.

But quiets numbers of them don't want their children to experience stress associated with learning. When students failed now guidance/parents frown at the tutors and sometimes even forced the school promotes them. Academically, parents plays a great roll in academy degradation

Again, like I said earlier, it is the times we live in.

In the 90s and early 2000s, people could afford to re-take WAEC and JAMB several times before they enter the university.

These days, people (both parents and their wards) will rather cheat their way through because they don't want to wait that long. Of course, they have their excuse: No one has that enough money to be dashing WAEC and JAMB as a regular customer anymore.

It is the times we live in.

this is not only specific to NGA as I teach abroad and the students I've been around honestly lack sense - they feel that understanding a concept applying that concept is literal - for instance they were meant to produce a resource plan for an organisation within the automotive industry ... the idea is that they discuss operations management, supply chain management and issues, match demand to supply etc BUT this people can't do anything unless the physically enter one of the organisations to see how operations work! You ask questions they don't even respond and shouts at you at will! worst part to listen in class or do the given work is another thing!

After a said and done, they think that they deserve a first for submission of work that literally lacks critically thinking, writing, analysis or even grammatically correct!
To shock you grade inflation is a thing as tutors/ lecturers are trying to make life easy for themselves whilst avoiding student complain! I can write more on this but ...

Thank you very much, for this beautiful submission. Your last paragraph has it for me 100%!

This is just the reality of our time. Next generation would come and still think that this generation was exceptional. Live life, build yourself and forget the trend is speaking. What will be will definitely be!

You actually raised some valid points in your submission. To me, it is not actually because many students can not engage in critical thinking again in Nigeria academic environment, the problem is that they channel there critical thinkings in negative direction. If you know what it takes to think deeply and dupe white men and foreign corporate organizations remotely in fraudulent engagement, then you will understand they apply their critical thinking in negative direction.

Some of these students are carried away with too much unregulated entertainment, movies and addition to sport-abuse. Instead of engaging in critical thinking within their academic scopes, they misuse it in negative direction. Some students can tell you everything about Ronado and Messi since they were born, remember every score they ever scored in champion league with heads, legs and all the girlfriends they ever dated. Surprisingly, Ronaldo and Messi don't even remember most of these.

When a student puts all those irrelevant things in his head outside its academic; how many space should be left for relevant academic purpose that can lead to critical thinking in positive direction. The truth is that we are all part of the problem to academic degradation in Nigeria why it seems as if critical thinking is dwindling from our academic system. We normally blame only government, but believe me; students, lecturers, government and parents have their own share of blame.

Many lecturers today don't even encourage students to think critically. Out of two hours lecture, students may not pick anything that will aid their critical thinking except lecturer's jokes, story, abuse and assignment. Many lecturers themselves can not think critically because they don't engage in quality academic researches that can boost their critical thinking; most of the researches they are boasting off are students' academic projects and seminars they converted to local and international published journals.

How do you expect lecturers that lack critical thinking to produce students with one. Like lecturers, like their students. Many of the lecturers in our Universities today don't have industrial experiences; many have never worked in industries for one day before getting lecturing work, but they want to train students who will go to industries they themselves have never been for one day. Which quality do you expect from those students? Some will even retain first class student to become lecturer even without any form of industrial training.

There are many things time will not permit me to put here, our academic system must be restructured, system of recruiting lecturers must be reviewed, students must always be monitored during research work; many students only put video, games and music on their laptop, they don't even know how to use them for researches. Eye services are usually too much during accreditation, many schools usually borrow equipment they use for accreditation to deceive government that all is well with their departments; but will later come back to blame the same government.

With the happenings in Nigeria, you don't need a prophet to answer this your question.
First of all, the educational system which is considered as one of the pillars that holds the society is at a dysfunctional state here in Nigeria. Over the years we've experienced serious educational decline because we have leaders who have no regard for education. All their children are out there schooling , so nothing like constant ASUU strike, inconvenient atmosphere for learning , hiking of tuition fees, cultism here and there etc. Is not really affecting them but the common man. Couple with the fact that when you graduate they won't be guarantee for a good job. How do you expect them to think, when almost all hope is lost.
