Does Rooney have an axe to Grind with Ronaldo?

By Soibi Versatile

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has hit out at Manchester United his former club for the resigning of Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo joined his former club after 12 years away from home. The former Real Madrid star left United in 2009 for a world record fee of £80m and went on to become the all time scorer of Real Madrid putting 450 balls in the net during his 9 years spell at Santiago Bernabue before departing for Juventus in a £99m deal winning 5 trophies with the bionconneri before his sensational return to Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo who was poised to join rivals Manchester City to play under Pep Guardiola pulled out of the deal to make his return after a phone call from Sir Alex Ferguson. United signed Ronaldo again for £13m enjoying a windfall in the sale of his jersey with the club couping back the amount spent on him in a space of two weeks. Ronaldo shone in his re-debut by scoring twice against the magpies in September 2021.
However with a drop in the teams total performance critics had come out of their shell to lay blame on Ronaldo for the club’s decline. Gary Neville and some ex players have been critical of the man who holds the record for most goals scored in football history.

Wayne Rooney, 36 a former teammate to Ronaldo has been the latest to bad-mouth the Portuguese having said in November that some players were throwing their arms in the air and complaining during matches. Rooney like other legends have thrown a plethora of allegations against Ronaldo which in truth are fictitious and dubious probably triggered by jealousy or bitterness.

Despite being 37 years of age Ronaldo since his return has been Manchester United’s top scorer in both the Premier league and the Champions league. Ronaldo has 6 goals in 7 games in Europe and was responsible for Manchester United finishing top of their group in the Champions league despite shambolic displays in several Champions league games.

In the league Ronaldo has been Manchester United’s top scorer with 12 goals. In fact he ranks 3rd in the goal rankings in English Top flight this season with the least number of games to his name. However that has not saved him from being victimized by former players who themselves were finished and totally ineffective at his age.

Of all the Premier league strikers Ronaldo has the most goals against the Top 6 teams at 7, two more than serial golden boot winner Harry Kane and 3 more than top scorer Mohammed Salah.

Ronaldo has also been credited with the most match winning goals in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season. For Manchester United Ronaldo has been named Premier League player of the month once. Champions league player of the week twice. Manchester United player of the month thrice and has won the Manchester United goal of the month thrice this season. In fact Manchester United have not won a match in which the Portuguese did not start or feature.

No Manchester United player has more personal achievements than him this season yet Wayne Rooney has laid the blame on Ronaldo’s feet and asked the club to replace him if they want to move forward. Ronaldo has been accused of the club’s league position at 7th with reference to last season where they finished 2nd. But the club’s failure to win trophies four years before Ronaldo arrived a second time has not been talked about in relation to Ronaldo’s trophy haul since departing.

Manchester United last won the Champions league in 2008 with Ronaldo winning the Golden boot award that year. In Ronaldo’s absence from Manchester United the Portuguese has won four more Champions league titles 22 more trophies in relation to Manchester United 12 and four more Best Player of the Year awards. In Ronaldo’s last 3 years before rejoining United Ronaldo had won 5 club trophies including two league titles with Juventus and the Nations league with PORTUGAL. In fact Cristiano Ronaldo won the Golden Boot of last year’s edition of the European Championship and also won the Golden boot in Seriea A and best player in Seria A. In contrast when was the last time a Manchester United player won the best player of top scorer of any competition?

Prior to Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United he had never lost a game as captain in a club side match spanning 59 matches but in his return to Old Trafford lost 1-0 to Wolves in January.
In the Champions league Cristiano Ronaldo had never been knocked out by a Diego Simeone team. But Manchester United were kicked out of the Champions league this year by a Diego Simeone team. If anyone should blame each other for being a bad luck it is Ronaldo who should blame this current Manchester United not the other way round. The likes of Neville who apparently was dumb until his friend Ole got sacked or has a veil over his face that prevents him from seeing the school boy defending from LukeShaw and Harry Macguire

Most of the criticism of Ronaldo has been his defensive abilities not his scoring side and that is ridiculous considering he plays as a striker. Ronaldo in contrast to other younger players in Manchester United does more defensive work but the pundits and talkatives like Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney would be blind to see or too daft to reason. Rooney perhaps has failed to realise that the Manchester United defense has been horrible this season and Harry Macguire has also been booed by the fans during International duty because of his horrible defensive blunders. But the likes of Rooney and Gary Neville probably have been too busy or blinded by English bias to see. Unlike in the case of Messi where the Argentinian is 97th on the goals log in League 1. Cristiano is up there with the best players like Mohammed Salah and Harry Kane and Diogo Jota.

Rooney’s Feud with Ronaldo

Rooney had been involved in a world cup chaos with Cristiano Ronaldo during the quarter finals game between England and Portugal after he got sent off for a horrible tackle. Rooney blamed his sending off on Ronaldo and it almost caused the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2006 had it not been for the intervention of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rooney’s fall in the world Cup led to Ronaldo’s rise with the Portuguese winning the PFA Player of the year both Young and Main the following season. Ronaldo became Manchester United’s top scorer, penalty taker and the golden boy of the team from 2006-2009. After Ronaldo had won the Balon Dor in 2008 Wayne Rooney was asked if he thought Ronaldo was the best player in the world he clearly said Ronaldo was not the best to him. Sir Alex Ferguson in his autobiography had snubbed Wayne Rooney when mentioning the world class players he managed but mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo as the most gifted he ever managed.

It is Wayne Rooney’s way to express jealousy over players doing better than him. In 2013 he wanted to leave the club because of Robin Van Persie had become the main man of the team, was earning same wage as him (£250k) and was getting praises for leading the team to their 20th Premier League title.

Had it not been for the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson Rooney was going to sign for Chelsea a rival team. In 2010 Rooney had held Manchester United by the balls after he had one year left on his contract by demanding a wage rise from £100k to £250k or he was going to sign for their noisy neighbors Manchester City. Rooney also accused his team mates of being average despite playing three European finals between 2008 and 2011 but now complains of players throwing tantrums when not given good passes when in a position to score. In his latest book the Derby County Manager had blasted Ronaldo for being annoying and currently not as good as his was but still annoying.

Ronaldo was everything Rooney would have wanted to be aside that he was not as talented as the Portuguese or professional as he was, with numerous controversial cases attributed to his name during the course of his career. At 29 Rooney was a finished player who could barely raise his leg to walk or run normally on the pitch but still demanded a £300k deal and signed with a clause that no player should earn more than him.

Rooney exemplifies selfishness and envy in football. He exemplifies unprofessionalism with his numerous drink driving charges and improper conduct charges during the course of his career but obviously cannot sleep well at night because someone who is older than him kept himself fit and is still scoring goals at 37 and being praised by the fans. Rooney represents the scandalous nature of a professional footballer if not anything and cannot be a role model for many unlike Ronaldo whom he constantly throws shades at with thousands of fellow players calling Ronaldo their idol and mimicking his goals celebration. If anyone cannot criticise Ronaldo it is Rooney and whatever bitterness that blindfolds his thoughts and reasoning in the midst of an overwhelming contradiction to his claims further emphasizes he has not moved on from the reality that he was simply overshadowed by the greatest goals scorer in football history.

It is Ronaldo’s decision to continue or stay in football, he has earned the right to decide that, he has earned the right to longevity after an extraordinary professional conduct and self care and the likes of Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney who at 29 and 32 respectively were already finished cannot decide his fate neither can their awful managerial records marred by relegation battles define his future.

Ronaldo has a contract with Manchester United and not any Ex -player or pundit whether Gary Neville or Wayne Rooney are in a moral position to decide for Manchester United what they do with their star man. Ronaldo has just qualified his nation for a historic 5th World Cup and holds the record for most world cup qualifiers goals by a European player. At 37 most of Ronaldo’s mates are taking coaching courses but the Portuguese has said he will play well into his 40’s it will take many more years for the likes of Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville to bleed over his longevity in football.
