Catalytic converter theft has reached EPIDEMIC proportions in the USA right now. Gangs drive through neighborhoods carrying jacks and power tools, and they are capable of surgically removing the "cats" from any car in less than 15 seconds. Here is a video of a gang removing the cats from a police officer's car in California. The precious metals platinum and palladium are removed and purified for sale due to their extreme rarity and high price as raw materials in the car manufacturing industry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlODV1eJljM Sometimes the raised car falls on the thief and squashes them like a rat in a trap, resulting in death or severe injury, meaning that Ogun, the God of Iron is also at work in the USA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC89-OzCdJs Americans never fail to spot a business opportunity, so a new industry has been created marketing metal plates that bolt underneath cars to protect the cats from being stolen when the vehicles are parked anywhere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnrtLuzAg8o 1 Like |

I belong to international lexus forums and catalytic converter does not impact furl consumption rather it worsens it by creating a back pressure when it's clogged. 1 Like |

It does not, it only ensures that NOx emitted from the exhaust is cleaned before being released to the atmosphere. 1 Like |

Buharifan: The catalytic converter doesn't directly affect fuel economy, what actually affects fuel economy is the 2 oxygen sensors, one located before it and the second on it. Using my car as example, the first Oxygen sensor (upstream) is called Air/fuel ratio sensor. This is the most important sensor with regards to fuel economy regardless of whether the CAT is there or not. It's job is to measure the level of oxygen in the exhaust gases before the CAT. High oxygen means more fuel is required (lean) and low oxygen means too much fuel (rich). The normal oxygen called stoichiometric ratio is 14.7:1, that is 14.7 parts oxygen to 1 part fuel. This sensor is responsible for maintaining this ratio and the output of this sensor is used by the ECU to increase or reduce injectors fuel supply, this is called fuel trim. The effect of disconnecting this sensor is called open loop, where the ECU supplies fuel based on standard set values which otherwise will be supplied by the Airfuel ratio sensor in a closed loop. This standard values ensures delivery of fuel enough for all situations, this is sometimes higher than required so the car consumes more fuel. The second oxygen sensor (downstream) is responsible for checking the catalytic converter function and is used my the ECU to make fuel trims that will be efficient and minimize harmful emissions. 7 Likes |

The work of the cat is to remove dirty fumes. To enable you pass emissions test. That is why when you stand behind a car with good cat, you perceive a nice aroma. You stand behind one without and your cloths will smell smoky. Removing your cat, reduced the back pressure of gases comming from the engine. It's just like you smoke a ciger ette with with or without the filter. You even get more housepower from the engine. Finally, your engine last longer without the cat as it is under less strain. My experience. My cat got bad, got them to buy and fix new ones. Then 25-30k each. The car used 3. Omo, forget, they were all fake. I knew immediately they were installed, cause the exhaust smell did not change. After 2 months they blocked, I removed them. Omo, my moto get better milage, smoother drive, more power! My dash is clean. No check engine light! I have diven without cat for 3 years now. If your cat is bad, rip it out! Watin concern naija and emissions? If your car is over 180k miles, rip out that MF to enable you enjoy your sweet ride! https://itstillruns.com/benefits-removing-catalytic-converters-cars-4899387.html 1 Like |

Abroad it is mostly stolen because of the precious metals found in it. They sell it to recyclers who extract this precious metals. It's a global menace. |

Removing Indomie does it increase fuel consumptions. Mine was just removed and I have checked fuel consumption before and after removal. No significant difference. |

HazzanTazzan:Oga, my former v8 lexus car, when the cat went bad, I removed it. I got better milage, smoother engine Rev. Only draw back is the little extra noice which personally I liked. My daily drive drive today, a Honda SUV, I have removed the 3 cats. Same thing, better milage, more hp. Smoother engine. Cat is just for cleaner emissions. You cannot drive a car abroad without passing emmisions test. In naija who does such tests? Infact I suggest if your car has high milage, take out your cat to get the engine serve you longer. 1 Like |

franchasofficia: There are 2 cases with a bad oxygen sensor. With a failed O2 sensor , the ECU goes to open loop and an error code is set which will bring on the check engine light. This is easy to diagnose. A slow response O2 sensor is more difficult to know because it may not set an error code or check engine light and the ECU can remain on closed loop but the sensor is aged and not making fuel trim adjustment as required. It could lead to fuel consumption. Only a live scan and experience will be able to diagnose this. 1 Like |
