no I am yet to. but I am quite hopeful. People who I havent spoken to for ages keep calling me up and telling me that something big is coming up for me. I'm quite hopeful really.

Thanks for the info. I was also wondering the typical cost of accommodation in travel zones2-3. I understand accommodation could be quite expensive in central london but a lot cheaper in places like South West, East and maybe North Central. Any ideas?

Okay then. My prayers are with you. I know the anxiety that is associated with visa applications. But don't worry, all is well by the Grace of God.
When you get the outcome of your visa application which by God's grace will be successful, i will then advice you on the best way to 'survive' in london.

regarding the cost of accommodation and all that, put your mind at rest, when you get to that bridge, you will definately sail through.

Working and studying in the UK- very difficult. You will earn enough to pay your accommodation, travel and upkeep. That's all.

If you are a guy, go for security course and get your SIA licence. If you are a lady, register for care training as soon as you arrive here. You get paid up to 8 pounds/hour. But please, concentrate on your course. Don't abuse your NI number else your application will be rejected when you apply for extension. I know at least 3 people who have been rejected recently for doing more that the allowed 20 hours/week.

you are very correct. i was going to advice the guy on the same thing but i just wanted him to get the outcome of his application so that i can tell him the tricks he should employ and how to avoid the mistakes that so many nigerian students have made. the secret of breaking even in UK is longer hours at work, the longer hours you spend working, the ''richer'' for you. security is not bad, but there is nothing in a guy doing care work.

anyway, in england (london and environs), just go to any agency that specialises in recruiting for security jobs. they will train you and tell you the right modalities to go about getting the SIA license. Am not sure, but a friend told me that the cost of getting the license has recently gone up and should cost close to £300 if not more.

I am new in the UK and apart from that this SIA licence thing is new over here. Scotland started issuing it from February 2007.

I called a friend some minutes ago and asked him the same question, he told me that the application and the training cost about £600, and from November 1 it will be a criminal offence in Scotland to carry out a licensable security activity without an SIA licence or for supervisors, managers or directors of security firms to deploy unlicensed operatives.

you are welcome. £600 ?? thats much. try getting the license/trainning in any agency outside london. go to places like birmingham and manchester. its cheaper.

i do not totally agree with you on that. he can earn much more. some cleaning jobs even pay as much as £6, care jobs even higher. warehouse operatives even earn higher than £5. he can earn as much as £10 if he gets attached to a busy/well established agency.

just went through the site that azoriju posted. it is best you get the licence from an agency approved by the scottish authorities. so i guess if you get the license from manchester, it might be useless in scotland, since that is where you intend to work. check this link.

just take your time to go around the agencies and find out the one that will give you the trainning at the lowest price. most times, it is even the ''relatively small'' agencies that have the best rates of pay/steady flow of jobs.

rightly said. i think minimum wage is £5.50. Some jobs are evn £20/hr. But like you said, they do not come often.

I have read a lot on the SIA website and can't wait to obtain my own licence. I would like to choose between security guarding and door supervision (Bouncer). Please does anybody know the one that would give me more time to study?

You get more jobs as a door man.
There is also the possibility of working as a bouncer on weekends
which means you could get paid cash. Getting paid cash means
that your NI will not be violated.

Yeah! I think it's more cool to be a doorman/ bouncer. Please is it better to work for a company or work as a freelancer? What is the best option? But I'm wondering how a doorman can survive in a country that is full of thugs and drunkards. Man should at least wear a stab vest, isn't it?

Sorry its taken a while for me to write back. I've been having some problems with my isp. They no longer have a fixed tariff. Sometimes the charge me ridiculously high for a very short time online. And I'm scared of going to the cafes, EFCC is taking every young boy they see there, driving a car, claiming that he looks like a yahoo boy, Nigeria we hail thee.

I still called the VAC again this morning and they say it is still not ready for collection. I really dont know if it has anything to do with the crises in Portharcourt cos thats where I submmitted. The anxiety is really unbearable. The beef I had with my ISP peope was actually a welcome development cosit took my mind of these BHC people for a while.

And yes, my dad actually paid my entire tuition in full and got a 3% discount for doing that. Also he has promised to pay my accommodation fee for one semester (Sept to DEC/Jan) as soon as I get the visa so I guess I'm a bit lucky. It doesnt mean I still dont need those sisterly lessons of yours. I'm really looking for ward to breaking the news here one day as if say na CNN BReaking NEWS
