If you know people and you are a Northerner.

Right on point. Best of them to join is the Nigerian Airforce. Followed by Navy. Army is the worst. And kiss ass all the way, especially if your CO is an influential man.

The top circle seems very difficult to get into, but I am told that once you get into it, its enjoyment from there on (Even though that is not my purpose).

I heard of a Brigadier General who joined the military and just ammassed wealth. He aquired lands and properties all over the south and even though he retired, he still had soldiers that guarded his home and etc.

Its amazing how much the so called "military men" of Nigeria are relaxing and just ammassing wealth and titles without even doing their job. If you take a look at Babangida, Buhari or Abacha's uniforms you will see a countless number of medals, pins and etc that were all aquired without any real combat. Its a shame that the Nigerian army lacks so much experience.
Once u attain d rank of a brigadier in d military, ur salary is for life, security(guards) is for life, d military stil provides u wit certain incentives until d day u die.
There r 4 classes of generals in d military, a Brigadeir is a 1star general, a Major Gen. Is a 2star gen, a Lieut. Gen. Is a 3star gen, then a Field Marshal is a 4 star gen. Which no Nigerian has been able toattain yet, U have their equivalent in d Airforce & Navy. D rule applies there alao.
Gud Luck !!!

Hey Poster, if you are a u niversity graduate you can still sign on to the military by going through a 6 month course at the NDA and come out as an officer. If you enlist this way the maximum rank you can attain is Brig . Gen. but for most in this group, they end their careers as colonels.

99% of the comments here has shown that many Nigerians know nothing or very little about the Nigeria Armed Forces. It is no longer surprising to me again when I read most comments of people on the politics thread about the Nigeria military angry Now, I know why most comments are not true reflection of the military

You dont have to be Northerner or southerner to rise in Nigerian Army. All u need is good quality education and must be an infantry soldier and be tough. Remember the likes of Obasanjo and others make their mark in Army. You too can make your mark. so go ahead bro

Let's tell the truth, you're not getting anywhere without a coup. History has made that rather clear.
Re: What Is The Fastest Way To Rise In Rank In The Nigerian Army? by kelvin(m): 4:46pm On Jul 21, 2011
Generally, the fastest way to rise in the armed forces would be by raking in lots of medals, and you can't do that by sitting in an office, only through sweating in trenches and running through mine fields while bullets buzz over your head. My advice: join the air force, then, you only have to fly over battles. And besides, Nigerian Air Force has very few serviceable planes, so I doubt you'll see action much.

There are several ways of being a commissioned officer in the Armed Forces:
1. NDA Cadetship (Regular Combatant Commission).

2. Short Service Commission (for Graduates, u hv 2 convert to Regular Combatant Commission in 4 - 8 yrs or u r retired).

3. Direct Short Service Commission (for Specialist Graduates eg Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses etc, u also hv 2 convert in 4 - 8 yrs to Direct Regular Commission or u r retired).

4. Executive Commission (for Sgts and above in the other rank cadre who have served for 12 yrs+, acquired experience and attended their career courses).

Sir, getting to the top is PARTLY by knowing people, passing yr career courses WELL, d content of yr military records and hardwork. Added to this is yr performance in the execution of tasks and intelligence. The mil is not 4 evry1 (bcse of d nature of d job), Quota system starts affecting from d rank of Colonel upwards; reason why some do not go beyond that rank. Quota System is d equal representation of Senior Offrs in rank and appts fm d geopolitical zones; Odum, U seem intrsted, go 4 it and if u encounter stress just know dt such is normal. It makes u stronger (TRUELY). Gd Luck. Ignore some of the senseless inputs fm people who don't know Jack abt d military.

As a graduate, you can join the Nigeria military through short service as a commissioned officer or combatant short service after a training for 9months (formerly 6months). The training is usually at NDA Kaduna but the military takes only graduates with at least second class lower (2:2).  They verify your certificates without your knowledge (i'm 99.9% sure of this). Note that you have to purchase a form first, register and submit all credentials & necessary papers. Screening of forms are done and based on quota system (state and LGA), candidates are called up for a 2week intensive interview at NDA at the financial expense of the Defence HQ. Afterwhich, a final list will be published for the successful candidates for the 9months training.

1, if you are very good looking. those hausa boys will all want to be your friend. i had a family friend like that. his mum is from guyana (she has indian ancestry in her ). anyway the guy is very good looking. does not look like the typical nigerian. he went to NDA. all the hausa boys became his best friend. in no time at all (less than 10 years ) he is now brigadier general and has tonnes of cash.

this is the only way i know how. lol.

If you are a graduate, then you can go for short course. A nine month training and when you are out. You become a 2nd lieutenant. In less than two years you will be promoted to a full lieutenant. The way to the top isn't that easy, you will have to go for courses, not even the chief of staff can influence your promotion without taking some essential courses (e.g YOC - young officers course). Patience is needed, withing fifteen yrs you should be in a comfortable rank.

Same as a few here, have a BA in mechanical Eng, and a minor in Analytical mathematics from Dublin Institute of Tech, Already made up my mind to give up the good and comfortable life to head home and serve. DSSC then transfer to DRC is the plan. I know senior officers in the army so that might help.

it wasnt a trolling. I would swear but I dont swear anymore. This guy is a family friend. I would post a pic of him that i have when he visited me when i lived in chicago but i would have to ask his permission first. got nothing to gain by lying. when i was in nigeria on a few occasions i hung out with him and all his hausa friends. i was very young then. what i found fascinating was how these huge bulky looking hausa guys could hang with this ajebutter looking small guy but they had an extremely good rapport. they always drank and ate peppersoup at nights and anytime we rolled through checkpoints we were saluted and passed through. thats when i knew that if i wanted to live in naija with peace of mind, i had to join the forces. checkpoints ? popo will be falling all over themselves to salute you and let you go fast. sweet life  wink

first, no one ever attained the rank of brig-gen in less than 10yrs.not even during the nigerianisation era which lasted btw the late 50's and early 70's
as it stands today, the fastest way of rising in the armed forces is by enrolling for a 5yr regular course in NDA.to qualify, i believe kostar has pretty much given the basics.note that knowing (a stand) of a rank no less than a serving or rtd major-general will do well to forward your ambition
as an officer, you are not exactly a bodyguard incase you're made to head the security details of any figure
of utmost importance, one must be medically and physically fit

there are special cases. according to my family friend, it is very impt to have a GODFATHER. thats what he calls them. his rise to the top was very swift and meteoric. if you see him today, he still has a youthfull baby face and he is a brigadier general. it happens to some people. believe me this is someone who i know personally. his oyinbo mum (ok not quite oyinbo ) will bake guinness cake and take it to all the generals in NDA when dude was a student at NDA. everybody loved him there. they all wanted to be his godfather. if you see the guy today ? he has a home in miami. he travels to america and london regularly. if i drop his name some of you may know him sef.

another fast way to the top is to go to sandhurst. then return to naija when you finish.

more yrs than u think.

actually i think i miscalculated the time. he went to NDA in the early nineties or so. nonetheless his rise was meteoric because i seem to remember everyone talking about it. like he goes off for one assignment. he comes back and says i became captain. then he goes off for another training. thn he comes back and says i am major etc etc etc. all in a short time.

@ All

Thanks you everyone for your interesting and inciteful replies. From, your replies i take it that you must enter some type of officers candidacy school at some point or take a series of exams, and then emerge as an officer. This way seems more attractive than the original method I was told (Enter as a bodyguard and etc), but I see the time as a drawback. I will continue to think about this, and I will appreciate additional replies and etc.

PS
I would prefer the army rather than the airforce since Nigeria's areoplanes are obsolete. And I would have second thoughts about the navy since there are so many unique ways to die and Nigeria's navy is also a joke.
If it were within my power, I'd suggest that Nigeria send its generals and officers to foreign wars inorder to gain some serious experience (ie Cote D' Ivoire, Somalia, Sudan, Chad, etc.
