"Can't find placement" and talents abound. Let's start with Tech Twitter: How many Northerners resident in the North interact actively in the space? Outside Lagos and Abuja, you'd find sizeable representatives even in Akure, Ibadan, Enugu, Owerri, Uyo, Port Harcourt, and Calabar push narratives about the tech activities in their cities, but almost nothing from the North.

Thriving large tech hubs and tech co-working spaces in the North? I can't think of any. But I could name 20 in my city.

Pushing narratives is how VCs notice you. Two weeks ago, we had the Akwa Ibom Tech Week. VCs, recruiters, and established coys from within and outside Nigeria came in.

In fact, some U.S. software companies came in to conduct interviews for techies during the tech week, and as at last Friday, the interviewees were being employed. You can find evidence here: https://www.facebook.com/694186442/posts/pfbid0WoWBTWjSipr4B8uRWZprzFPaD9HNQKubiDyLidnDyEngiL8hsvnHQQTYvEDbbxgel .

Lagos does this. Abuja, same. Port Harcourt hosted the Start-up South recently. Ibadan has a thriving tech ecosystem too.

I don't see bodies in the North doing this.

And I haven't also mentioned the perception of insecurity (real or imagined) which VCs fear isn't a viable option.

As a northerner in tech, I knew I had to hightail it down south or I was just going to be another woulda-coulda.

Tech flourishes in libertarian environments not in rigid authoritarian setups rife with nepotistic undertones. There’s a reason California has the most left-leaning populace and also the biggest tech ventures in the world.

Just read the accident happens while Lastma was chasing a Sienna guy. It was the Sienna guy that killed the 2 Lawma cleaners.

Something needs to be done with the way these Latsma guys behave when it comes to private cars as compared to how they just overlook danfo drivers that commit the same offense.
There are a lot of things wrong in this country. I think the state government is not serious about ensuring LASTMA officials stick to their job of managing free flow of traffic. Normally why should LASTMA be chasing a vehicle when there are already cameras taking pictures of traffic offenders almost everywhere in Lagos?

Shebi they are just expected to send direct message to the driver's phone informing him of the fine and make it impossible for him to renew his papers except he pays the official fine.

Just like izzou pointed out, sweeping on an express road seems weird and just a disaster waiting to happen. I understand there was need for LASG to create jobs for those cleaners, but the risk they are exposed to on the job is just too much. I don't even know what the government can do to protect those cleaners other than to take them off the highways

But in what sane world will someone stand on an Expressway and be sweeping?

I am not putting this on the dead; May God accept their souls and console their families, but this was a disaster waiting to happen?

Why would you give someone a broom, to be sweeping the edges of a lane where cars are doing 100km/h?

This is not to hold any brief for the driver.

Thank you. I was going to post this. It is insanity to have people working on an EXPRESSWAY. the whole point of an express is for you to drive at high speed. It is why you have Kai on ground to arrest people who do not cross the bridge.

The logical thing is to do all cleaning at night, but since there are no working floodlights here we are.

Eventually someone will countersue lasg

Was there a zebra crossing? A stop sign? Do people clean expressways during rush hour in civilized countries?

You cannot claim that it is reckless driving on an expressway.

It is actually reckless driving as most times those Lawma cleaners usually have a cone for caution whenever they are sweeping. It's not as if those women were trying to cross the road.

The system is not perfect tbh but this particular incident is reckless driving fueled by Lastma.

Everybody will blame the driver, but the truth is those cleaners have no business staying on the expressway.

That is an expressway for heaven's sake. Standing on the kerbside is risky, talk more of on the lane, sweeping.

Nigeria is not libertarian at all in my books. You can’t express your true personality in Nigeria and feel safe. We have people hiding their sexuality, political affiliation and religious ideologies for fear of their personal safety.

Nigeria would have killed Alan Turing in WW2 immediately his sexual orientation was revealed (Britain actually did that for real which was regrettable)

We’re not libertarian at all

The way those lastma guys behave as if they are bigger than life ehn.

I almost had an encounter with one of them earlier this year. I was in a danfo going to Maryland, just after Ojota where you pass that bridge, that's how these Lastma vehicles just blocked the danfo I was in from the front, we were saved by whisker that the trailer behind us didnt ran into us. I almost slap the lastma guy when I came down. How do you put people's live at risk because you want to catch an offender?

Those guys are a menace and the earlier LASG make sure they stick to their core mandate of ensuring free flow of traffic, the better for us.

A single cone on an express to protect a human being working?

Why are lasg running up and down arresting people whose cars stop on expressways and roads? We know it is a shakedown, but a car that stops on an expressway is a hazard. A person working on an expressway is also a hazard. If repair works were going on they would cordon off the portion of the road or shut it down.

You mean the cones they put 100cm from where they are sweeping?

A human being should not even be there, even if you put 10 cones.

When you have a flat tire, you look out for a safe place to park and change it. Everywhere is not safe, even if you have a C-Caution.

If those women cannot sweep at late nights, where there's little to no traffic, they should stay at home.

What they are doing in way too risky.

We’re not libertarian at all

1.
an advocate or supporter of a political philosophy that advocates only minimal state intervention in the free market and the private lives of citizens.
"no true libertarian would ever support a culture where citizens must show their papers to travel"
2.
a person who advocates civil liberty.
adjective
relating to or denoting a political philosophy that advocates only minimal state intervention in the free market and the private lives of citizens.
"he holds libertarian views on most social issues"

In a true libertarian society govt does nothing and the free market is responsible for security etal.

That's why I say Nigeria is a libertarian society
If robbers are around you have to settle police before they come. If there is fire and fire service comes you have to get water for them. If there is power issue we have to buy our own transformer.

That is a true libertarian system.

The blame is not on the victims. It is on lasg that effected this policy.

In reality the victims should be suing lasg or whoever put them there. There is no difference between lasg and those Chinese factories we were talking about in other conversations. People are being put to work in hazardous conditions with no safeguards

Before you call the driver reckless, where did you park?

Do you know that while you are parked on the expressway, with your car jacked up, the wind from other cars passing can shift your jack, and the car can fall on the person?

Most expressways are designed to have lay-bys where people can park. If your car has issues, manage it there.

Because you have C-Caution does not mean you can park anywhere.

This is what lagosians casually do everyday. Run across a road where you can legally drive at over 100km/hr.

If I hit a person running across an expressway I am not legally at fault. It cannot even count as negligence. But because it is Nigeria police and community will shake me down.

She was even using a bucket as her cone. I scattered the bucket, but didn't get to her.

The argument is not funny. No human being should be on the expressway. Even road construction companies give a lot of distance and warning signs just to work there.

How can a government give someone a cone, and expect disaster not to happen one day?
