So basically you want to lie for your friend and lose your job so that they can keep theirs? You’re not bold enough to tell them to take responsibility for their actions? They’re happy to see you take the fall for them and lose your job?

Would you, as a friend, see someone lie for you and lose their job over your mistake if you care about them?

This once happened to a man I know... The story.

They were working in the store of a government agency, it happened that they do collaborate to steal different commodities, sell and share the money...

On this faithful day, they decided to use the car of one of them, about 8 of them in the department were I'm the know, while some were checking out for securities, 4 of them lifted 2 bags of soybeans costing #40k each and put I'm the mans boot, he was to drive it out to his house in the staff quarters, park it there then later dispose and settle others, but unfortunately a security spotted h drive out of the office and followed him, tried to stop him t search but on sensing, he speed off refusing to stop...

The security kept on the pursuit alerting other security on the process, the man drove on high speed within the work facility for about 30 min, the he ran out of fuel... Securities gathered and they got a hilux to toe the car to the security outpost with the content in his boot.

Soon Information went round on what happened, everyone passing front of the security office saw the car there, everyone in the store were arranged to face a DC, they had all agreed to claim they were involved and were sorry claiming the organization could not sack 8 workers like that... On the D day the chief culprit was in the room when each staff came in one after the other, they all denied knowing anything about it, they asked one staff where he was when it was happening, he said he went to the toilet, the asked another he said he fell sick and left the office about 15 min before the incidence, the DC asked how he alone was able to carry 2 bags of 100kg from the store to his car without anyone seeing him, they said the man is strong and can carry it alone, all gave excuses, after the DC, they all had a shout out where they accused him of singlehandedly stealing. About 4 days later, they all met him secretly begging and promising to give him monthly something until his case at the DC is determined, two months later they all stopped giving him, he was sacked.

Your company has been doing well ever since until you both authored and caused the problem yet your friend is the mastermind. They (your company) never reasoned such would even happen, and now the company is about to face great deals of unprecedented crises that it takes only a miraculous intervention to counter such happenstance.

In the heat of the dreadful moment, you are torn in between and are in the middle of the devil and the deep blue sea that moment standing in front of the dreadful managerial complaints, shouting and querying that would soon cost you your job. You are put under so much intense pressure and at the heel of covering your coworker's or colleague's very expensive mistake who is the so called mastermind, in the heat of the moment. This becomes a time you can't think carefully. Would you rather lose your job to cover him/her up? Would you take blame or defend yourself to keep your job?

What would you even do?

He/She must take responsibility first for their action before I will show my support....

If you make mistake at work, you should be honest and report your error. Life/lives could be lost because you made a mistake and decided to hide it. Someone else might be unfortunate to get blamed for your error and dishonesty, it could result in a great deal of stress to the organisation.

Be honest and report your mistake. A stitch in time saves nine.

I pity Nigerian businesses

People put themselves first before the company

A company either trading or manufacturing buys and sells for say 20% profit.

And staff wipes off everything 100%. And staff will Wipe off everything.

I once covered up for a colleague like that and bagged 1 week suspension without pay.

She kept mute throughout the period.

She also watched the wrong news being transmitted as to what really happened.

She never wanted to be identified with that gbege.

If I had lost my job, I dey on my own niyen.

Never sacrificed your means of survival for anybody.

I am now very ruthless to any nonsense office friendships.

Do your job and go home, we were not meant to be friends after all.

Don't cover up for them but encourage them to own up.

Also, this is strictly a business/ professional ethics matter, so tell it. Don't let their actions impinge on your personal and professional integrity. Remember, a thief is not as guilty as someone who provides them a cover.

Yup being there....being served!

I remember my sapa era working in a factory.
The driver of the factory truck ( my friend) went as far as outskirts of Benin city ( almost delta) to sell the company goods.

The truck broke down there, the manager found out the location of the truck & driver are was heavily furious ( he thought out loud to my hearing, that the driver was not in that location on official duties but for some personal runs. He said he would be arrested pending when the truck is repaired on the drivers salary).

As a friend,I quickly alerted the driver, my friend of the managers tots and plans.

When the manager got to the location with a tow truck, an argument started and my stupid friend angrily yelled out the managers plans and thoughts as I have told him.

The manager was furious and demanded to know how he got the information, the idiot went ahead to call my name as his source .

....and I was fired undecided
Reason: you can't keep company secrets grin
