Nigerians are fooling themselves without knowing it. Govt is paying about 60% of the value of imported fuel for them, a scheme that presently costs about N4trn annually.

This means that the N4trn that could have been used to set up rice farms and achieve consumption demands, or generate power (about 10,000MW at current exchange rates) is lost in a totally unproductive cycle.

Whatever gains people think to have by the free fuel is lost twice or thrice over, annually (est), through the loss in naira value created by their unproductive subsidy Bonanza, increase in materials costs, rents hikes, food costs, general living costs and also the problems of unemployment/inactivity that will be caused by the $10bn (N4trn) unused to increase any domestic productions but shared nationally to citizens who will lose the gain before the month runs out through inflation and remittances to dependents.

If the average car owner "saves" N150,000 annually through the subsidy scam, he loses at least N800,000+ (est) in the same period through the currency value loss, living costs hike and remittances (to dependents increasingly rendered inactive through nationally unproductive $10bn). These problems are in infatuated with the production and economic value chains surrounding such a bonanza.

The next Nigerian President must man up and ban the scam from Day 1 if he is serious about fixing the country.

Premium Motor Spirit is N450/L on average in neighbouring African countries and with lower transportation costs compared to Nigeria. That means with a fuel price of N450/L, an average km of travel there by Public transport is cheaper than prices charged in Nigeria despite the free fuel. The problem with transportation costs is not the pump price.

Where are the refineries? Why are this that are meant to make the refineries work the same people in charge of fuel importation and subsidy?

When we are ready to make the country work, it will work.

You can't say you're scrapping subsidy but still turn around to fix petrol price at ₦400.

Why didnt u suggest we repair our refineries before removing fuel subsidy? U know this is nigeria where forces of demand n supply are control by cabals. U expect fuel to be N400 and not watch other commodities increase which will cause huge economic crisis for now..
Oga tell us something else.even the trillions they are quoting are false claims..so leave the matter.if one man can built a new refenery, why cant govt revamp the existing ones or even built new one...

Yinmu. Those for and against subsidies enjoying both electricity subsidy and petrol subsidy in their urban locations at the expense of poor Nigerians living in villages without electricity and roads are hypocrites.

Do not scrap subsidy, give those poor folks an equivalent of subsidies you hypocrites enjoy. They pick up your subsidy bills and the social cost so give them subsidized health insurance, free education etc or else their blood is on your hands.
Subsidy should remain and be extended to them so that you hypocrites can give them their share of the national cake you are monopolising at the expense of their wellbeing and lives.

If the price is $1.5, it should be sold at N615 and the subsidy funds rechannelled.

what stoping Nigeria to fix their refinery and make fuel affordable for her citizen
Only in Nigeria among oil producing country you will see her citizen suffer for fuel.

Why should Nigeria import fuel for the first place Nigeria and their government don't have shame.

Nigeria have right to sell thire citizen fuel whit intonational price
That should be the benefit of what God has given to them.

I agree.

People simple don't understand.

There's nothing more frustrating than the corrosive belief amongst many Nigerians that subsidised fuel is their only benefit from the govt and no one must take it away.

The whole subsidy thing is wrapped up in monumental fraud.

I disagree with you on fixing the price. Let the price be set by market forces. Government should not be involved.

This subsidy thing is killing the economy.

Since several regimes have not been able to fix the refineries, why keep hoping that they will ever be fixed

Also, if the refineries are fixed, you still want the govt to 'make fuel affordable for her citizen'.

So effectively, you want subsidy to continue in perpetuity and consign the refurbished refineries to permanent loss of profit.

When are people going to stop this ruinous socialist way of thinking.
