I can see scenarios where it could last a long time, like the Soviet Afghan War. Or could be wrapped up this year.

Let’s explore both. First the Afghan scenario. Both sides are locked in a stalemate right now. If this continues there could be small gains made by wither side but the war go on indefinitely. If Russia by some miracle were able to overwhelm the Ukrainian military, which so far they have shown themselves incapable of doing, an extended war with guerrilla like tactics would ensue. The Soviet losses in Afghanistan would pale in comparison to losses they would sustain in Ukraine.

Now let’s go to the 2022 scenario. There was a intelligence report this week that a top Kremlin official has reportedly approached the West in an effort to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine, according to a leaked document.

The high ranking, unidentified member of Putin's inner-circle claims the Kremlin is "panic-stricken" and desperate for the war to end as Russia's offensive passes its sixth month.

The document states that "A representative of Putin’s inner-circle sent a signal to the West about the desire to .”

"The mood of the Kremlin elite is panic."

if this is accurate and the condition in Russia continues to deteriorate, Russian soldiers could be home by Christmas and Ukrainians enjoying a Christmas vacation in Crimea.

Let’s hope this is the scenario that occurs and that the destruction and loss of life can be stopped.
