Umuchichi and Umueme communities in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State have protested the poor condition of the major road in the area, the Okpulo Umuobo/Umuchichi/Umueme Road and called on the two companies doing business in the area to fix it.

They threatened that if the companies do not fix the road after December, no haulage truck would be allowed to pass through the road.

Natives and residents of the two neighbouring communities marched through the stretch of the road from the Umuchichi Council Hall junction, to the gates of Glass Force Limited and GZ Industry.

The protesters who carried placards, and sang solidarity songs as they waded through the muddy road to the gates of the two companies, expressed displeasure over the state of the road.

Their spokesman, Chigoziem Okechukwu said they were not protesting because they did not like the existence of the companies in the area, but were protesting because of the problem the firms are creating for them.

"The environmental impact of their existence here is negative and they are not responsive to it.

"It took us about N20m to fix this road this year, but within six months, the companies heavy trucks have destroyed it".

Okechukwu revealed that more than 300 trucks leave or enter the companies on daily basis, using the road.

He urged the management of the companies to be responsive to know that the natives need a very strong road for their trucks; "we have endured enough", he said.

Chuks Ezeyim, a landlord in the area, regretted that the authorities of the two communities are not helping matters when it comes to maintaining the road.

He said the state government should give the companies tax holidays to enable them fix the roads and where that has been done and they refused to fix the roads, government should query them.

"This is a warning protest, if after December, nothing was done, we will not allow any truck to pass the road again", he warned.

Addressing the protesters, the HR manager of GZ Industry, Obi Nwankwor said the company has held meetings with stakeholders in the area.

While urging the people to exercise patience as the company gets approval from the state government, he assured that soon the company would start the rehabilitation of the road.

"We all are part of the community, we need the road in good shape and immediately we get approval from the state government, we will start work on the road", he assured.

They must just blame every other persons but themselves. So road construction is now the responsibility of companies, not govt? Shebi the companies no dey pay tax ni? Is the road not part of what they pay tax for?

Honestly, South East govs are the luckiest leaders in Nigeria. Pack all the money, tell them to start blaming Tinubu for the poor roads. It is now the turn of companies since insulting Tinubu is not giving any results.

Ikpeazu undeniably is clueless and the worst governor Abia state ever had. Little wonder he has now become Wike's boy, despite being a sitting governor.

Ikpeazu's biggest and only achievement is the Osisioma flyover he sparogatively commissioned after almost 7 years of starting the project.

May Abians never have it this bad again. Isee

Funny people! Instead of venting their anger on Abia state governor who has failed woefully in governance, they are holding innocent company suffering from multiple taxation responsible for their woes, or is the company not contributing its quota to the economic development of Abia State?

I feel for Abians, to think that Ebonyi state was created after Abia State is a shame. Now Abia can not meet up Ebonyi in terms of Infrastructure.
Shame on Ikpeazu

Wtf.. This is part of the reason non indigenes avoid investing in the SE.. the kind charges you will attract for a plot of land from indigenes go make you run..

This story is not even complete, coz I know of a company in same Abia state that offered to rehabilitate its access road, but the community insists they must be paid before the rehabilitation

When did it become the official responsibilities of private firms to fix roads
Instead of telling their government to fix their roads, they are busy chasing shadows.
grin

Must you criticise everything Igbo? Is Dangote and other companies not doing roads in Lagos? Do you know the volume of truck these companies run on the roads everyday? Is it out of place to request for companies to do roads which they are also benefiting from? Do the companies pay VAT to the state or Federal government?

Now,I must say this and it should stop.

If any Govt in power knows they lack the financial will to execute important road projects whether in town or inter-city road and local man(Other party polictians, businessmen & private individuals) have the will and able to do the roads in their states, especially ones close to their companies, the govt should allow them pls.

This has become the num in Nigeria and it should stop. Why do you all politicians tend to be callous? Why are you all born to be evil? Fayemi,Oyetola and other wicked governors disallowed businessmen and other politicians to construct roads leading to the company, hotels, even streets in their villages. This is absurd.

The pics above is as a result of this same factor in the Nigeria polity. There would have been businessmen who offered to construct the roads but the govt will disallow it.

When will you guys be tired of doing evil?

You didn't read where they were asking the government to grant tax holiday to the companies so they can fix the road.
Anyways, urchins don't know what tax holiday means.

They fixed the road this same year.....and before the year ran out, it's in this state!!!

This is the one of the sensible things to do. The company should be involved.
