what protection do they need? Who has been protecting Finland since 1945 when WW2 ended? Has Finland ever had any border dispute or clash with Russia since 1945? No! And why would Russia needs to conduct any special operations in Finland when they never had any pact or agreement together in the first place? So if I get you correctly, you're trying to make me understand Russia could just wake up from sleep one day and decide to take a stroll in another man's land for no reason at all? And Unlike Finland, Ukraine had agreements with Russia which they threw to the bin that promoted RU to step in militarily. Ukraine had no security issues to deal with but unfortunately the corrupt regime and clown in Kiev is too immature to deal with real politics of the world and he got baited and now using his country to pay damages that would've been NATO's. So with or without NATO, RU has no business in Finland and it would've benefited them more if they remained neutral as any potential clash with NATO in the near future will see Finland take inevitable hit. Finland and Sweden have been partaking in many low-scale NATO activities even before Russia invaded Ukraine. We can call them defacto members of NATO. This situation can be likened to the case of Japan and south korea in asia. Nato membership for Sweden and Finland doesn't necessarily offer them protection, it will only increase tension, and the probability of miscalculations in the region and make them a legitimate target for the Russians in the event of a full scale war.
