The Ogun State government yesterday frowned at the current state of the Obafemi Awolowo College Of Health Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University [OOU], Sagamu, describing the state of deterioration in the college as “unimaginable”.

The executive secretary of the Bureau of Tertiary Institutions in the state, Kayode Oyesiku, made this declaration while speaking with journalists when he accompanied the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Segun Odubela to the college on a familiarisation visit.

“The visit of the Commissioner to the College of Medicine is a landmark, because its coming at a time when the college needs the attention of the state government,” said Mr Oyesiku. “The extent of deterioration is unimaginable and one begins to see the quality of medical students that are likely to be produced.”

He, however, expressed hope of the college gaining back its lost glory given the assurances of the state government’s direct intervention in the area of assisting the college in upgrading of its facilities.

However, in his remaks Mr Odubela, said the state government, as a matter of priority, would look into how it would assist the college, adding that his visit to the college was borne out of the government’s desire to asses the situations of things in the state-owned tertiary institutions and immediately find solutions to their problems.

Welcoming the Commissioner and his team, the Vice Chancellor, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Wale Are Olaitan, described the state of the college of medicine as an “emergency” which needed to be addressed, pointing out that the college, before now, ranked amongst the best medical schools in the country.

I don't see the point of naming something after someone and then letting it fall apart/deteriorate. Better not to name it after Awo at all.
