Welcome to A New Nigeria.

Congratulations to everyone in advance! 🥂

I hope so. People that have struggled to study should not be penalised for trying to do well for their families. What nonsense. It is not like when they go to the west it is smooth sailing.

Instead of that bill they should be holding the Minister of Health responsible for the state of Nigerian healthcare. Who is even the the Minister of Health sef?

A very arguable discussion.

The main reason why doctors are fleeing the country is that they deserve better. And yes this is very true.
Unfortunately due to high level of corruption going on in the land, every sector is in deep shit. Not only the health sector.

The lecturers are clamouring for more pay, they embarked on a lengthy strike that saw students staying at home for close to a year. Who suffered?

The masses.

In the end, almost nothing changed.

If the Doctors all find their way out of the country because of the corrupt state of things, who will suffer ?

The masses.

Believe me, the masses are already feeling the heat. Go to the hospitals, you will know.
It is only a matter of time before you and I are left with only quacks to treat us. Nigeria as it stands is a poor country and can't compete with the standards of what the developed countries are offering.

Yes, on the surface this is a very wicked bill. (Despite the fact that they have the right since they provided subsidized training for the Doctors to earn their skills and license)
Let's leave that aside.
It is still a very wicked bill.

But looking inward, I feel it might not be a bad call after all.

I only wish the politicians can also make such calls for themselves too. Take for instance, they should also pass a bill neccessitating all politicians to use the countries hospitals.

That way we will all agree that they mean well.

IT is a BAD call . You see our leaders are reactive and never proactive . They see doctors leaving , they want to stop them instead of stopping the reason why they are leaving . It cannot work . Nigerians will find a way around it or those countries will find a way to make it easier for Nigerian health practitioners to circumvent whatever measures the government puts in place .

The only way is to make Nigeria better . They should stop their uselessness and be useful for this country for once in their miserable lives .

Question : if you ask any politician to give a sizeable portion of the funds he/she plans to use for medical tourism to a Nigerian Doctor for treatment , will he do it ?

You guys should just stop this currency conversion because the cost of living in Uk is higher than Nigeria,to be able to save and send some pounds to Nigeria you would have to comprise on some quality living, to me it is similar to all those northerners that travel to lagos ,save up and send some cash back home
DesChyko:
That bill made sense only to people who prioritise waste of time as a lifestyle. It costs a lot to emigrate to a country which offers better value for labour but people are doing it anyways, and in large numbers too. Hell! Nigerian medical professionals are in high demand outside the shores of our country. And instead of the government to seek ways to make here like there, they're trying their usual 'shut down whatever you can't control tactics'.

The reasons teachers don't have much advantage like doctors is the required teaching qualifications. Is the government aware though that UK for example has made it easier for teachers in Nigeria to apply for QTS which once approved, they can just emigrate and get a teaching job without having to take an additional course?

The minimum salary for the lowest level of teaching (NQT) in the UK is about £28,000 per annum; an equivalent of #25m in Nigeria.

I'll like to ask you a pretty much straightforward question since we have a low cost of living. How much do you think the average Nigerian adult citizen earns if you are to assume?

We just heard that a whooping 69 billion dollars (28 trillion naira) of looted Nigeria funds was allegedly discovered by America in America system. Imagine what it would have done if used for the betterment of the Nigerian system.

This is what you get when you keep electing dummies as lawmakers.....
THE PROBLEM: Brain drain in the health sector. Reasons for it being that medical personnels see that they are not properly compensated for their effort, they don't have good terms of service and they are generally not appreciated and valued enough.
THE SOLUTION AS PROPOSED BY YOUR LAWMAKERS AND THEIR NONSENSE BILL: After the rigours of study, withhold their license for full practice for 5 years.

So when u withhold their license, will they feel better valued? You people keep voting these idiots and one way or the other, the mess will touch everyone....you that you are enabling them, dont worry ur child will go the uni to study medicine then graduate, and will have to wait for 5 years to get full authority on his/her license... You think you are doing others, na urself u dey do.....it will surely go round.

The only condition I can support the bill is for them to include in the bill that every elected person in Nigeria will not travel abroad for any medical reason for the period of his/her 4 years tenure, since they claim that graduates must serve the country for 5 years, they should also patronize that service from the graduates for 4 years in Nigeria....

But how does the average Nigerian do all these 'lofty' ideals you stated above when he is no where in the food chain of democracy in Nigeria. It is okay to think wishfully to satisfy one's angst once in a while but the reality of Nigeria is that whatever the so called leaders want, no matter how ridiculous WILL BE DONE at the end of the day.

This is not a Peoples led democracy. It is a feudalism fed oligarchy, where the so called citizens are peons in reality who subject themselves to 'revering' their leaders as lords. The democracy that works is one where citizens are top of the food chain and engage leaders from amongst themselves to lead, a first amongst equals relationship or for worse an employer, employee house of business.

Then they consult you the citizen before taking action like a faithful servant they oddly claim to be (when soliciting your emotions to further enslave you). But Nigeria is a country full of all types of leaders, paid heavily by the citizens but not one of them has any respect whatsoever for the citizens.

They take actions unilaterally, float policies to suit themselves, spend the resources of the country the way and manner they like and on things they alone see fit, no consultation , no debates and with scant regards for the effects on citizens short or long term.

I have never seen such democracy in all the world except here. And it is all because 'the people' who are majority stakeholders in this franchise are weak, divided and ignorant. And like the Holy Book says in Galatians 4:1 by which I infer; 'as long as the average citizen thinks and acts like a child his democratic experiences will not differ from that of a slave, although he is the owner of the country indeed ....'

So Nigerians must 'grow up' or continue to suffer. And if this forum is a snapshot of what the country looks like at ground zero, then I'm afraid.

This bill is equivalent to forced labour, and forced labour is slavery which is an infringement on fundamental human rights of freedom

The bill is a very good thing and it supposed to be 10 year or 15 years, not 5 years.Brain drain is destroying Nigeria everyday there is no doctor in our hospitals anymore so this bill is super necessary before our death rate is out of the roof
Not all of us can afford to go abroad for treatment and if you know that your sole aim is to work abroad after you finish your study then you should go abroad to study not to use our system and facility to study and run abroad immediately you finished study
At the same time the government need to increase doctors salary and provide conductive working environment in order to encourage them to stay and encourage those abroad to come back
Brain drain isn’t a joke it destroy nations and that is why Indian,Russia and China always reject free visa from USA for their professional
5 years is too small must be 10 or 15 before we are all dead.
If you people don’t know, brain drain is an hybrid war
It destroy nations

Read his submission again carefully to understand why the bill can not be the ultimate solution. His suggestions are reasonable.
