Fashola: Buhari is like a coach who sits for 90 minutes | Tinubu joins the players on the field.

Babatunde Fashola, minister of works and housing, says the leadership styles of President Muhammadu Buhari and President-elect Bola Tinubu vary.

Using football managers as an example, Fashola said Buhari is like a coach who prepares his team for the game and sits in the dugout for 90 minutes — while Tinubu is the type of gaffer who gets involved with the team’s activities on the field.

The minister worked under Tinubu as the chief of staff in Lagos state and succeeded the president-elect as Lagos governor.

Fashola is presently a two-term minister in the administration of Buhari.

Speaking on Sunday in an interview with Channels Television, the minister asked those planning to work in Tinubu’s government to be prepared, saying the former Lagos governor is “very nocturnal”.

“I was his (Tinubu) chief of staff for four and a half years. I took over from Lai Mohammed,” he said.

“In terms of controlling Asiwaju’s schedule, that was a tough task because he has day and night schedules.

“For those who are going to work with him, he is very nocturnal. I hope he changes. He will wake you up at night. He does his best work in the dead of the night.

Unless you push back and claim your space at night, he will encroach it.

“He is very detailed. He micromanages — more than President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I was speaking with somebody and I said imagine there are two football coaches; President Muhammadu Buhari is the type of football coach that will prepare his team, sit in the dugout and watch them play for 90 minutes.

“He (Buhari) trusts them to do the work and believes there is nothing he can do.

“Asiwaju will be that kind of coach playing the game with them (players) on the field.”

The minister added that Buhari did not interfere in his ministry over the last eight years.

Innovators and writers share Tinubu's profile.

People that innovate don't sleep at night, even if they want to, they can't. Same with writers. I should point out that when I say "writers", I don't mean authors. Authors can create a product in less than a week, and by next year it has expired. Writers may not produce anything for 5 years, but when they do its lifespan is eternity.

Innovators and writers bring us breakthroughs.

Perfect description of both men.

Buhari is the only guy that will leave a minister alone and not check upon their activities or sack them if they performed extremely below expectation. Man just left the ministers alone and everyone was busy flexing muscle like they are answerable to nobody.

I think Buhari trust people too much and he is very slow to take actions. This affected his tenure because there are some actions that should have been taken so fast that Buhari will only action at the die minute when everything already spoilt.

In management, both tactics have their advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage of Buhari tactics is that it gives ministers free hand to operate without interference. It also allows them to be innovative and take charge of their sector with less dependence on the whip of the presidency.

Infact in the corporate world, if you let junior staff take ownership, it increases their self confidence more and it gives them rapid growth on the job compared to them depending on you everytime for guidance.

However, where Buhari got it wrong is that he should have access them periodically and an example in this coach context will be during half time. If a player do not perform to expectation and causing problem to the plan, he should just substitute the player at half time.

Buhari never substitute and that is where he got things wrong.

buhari doesn't even ever get any good person at position

From the word go when he took 1 year to make appointment he has been employing clueless fools and giving them freedom to express their cluelessness

That’s because Buhari does not have network of people (both technocrat and political genius) he historically developed or within his personal caucus. In life, human capital and loyalty is very important.

Most of the people Buhari employed are not people that share his own belief/ideology/goals and they are just imposed on him. He dosen’t have those comrade like Tinubu for example.

Buhari just need to take charge and it would have been better. But Baba never take charge at all and the ministers behave too god-like and it is as tho they don’t even fear Buhari for anything.

naptu2:
I watched an interview that he gave a long time afterwards and a journalist asked him the obvious question, how come he doesn't shout instructions to the players during the match?

He said that it was a waste of time. He said that different coaches had their styles, but he felt that shouting instructions to the players all the time was a waste of time. There was so much noise in the stadium that the players couldn't hear you anyway. Besides, he had given the players their proper instructions before the match. He always prepares very well, studies the opposition and gives his players the right instructions, so everybody knew what to do.

Stop trying to twist ..and smooth out an obviously flawed statement from Fashola.

Same Buhari said that Ministers are Noise Makers, after he became President? abi you think say, we don forget?

What this means is that Buhari was never in-tune with your agenda from the onset.

The Fact that Late Abba Kyari, wanted to smash Tinubu and his appointees was a pointer to the fact that the cabal Never wanted Political relevance with you unreliable individuals. Death took Abba away, and gave Tinubu and his cohorts the opportunity to ride "unchecked" , thereby killing that countries economy and leaving it in that sorry and pathetic state.

As for Buhari, that you supported robustly, (Obviously not because of competence ) ..Even a fuu will know its because of Political survival and relevance.

Fashola, describing Buhari as Onigbinde, is an insult...

Fashola and all the appointees of Buhari failed woefully , and you dont have any right to try and repair an already damaged set up...spits

Perfect description of both men, most especially Buhari. He is not only a coach who sits for 90mins, he is simply a tacticless coach with 18th century formation.

I remember one Modakeke man in charge of super Eagle in 2002 world cup. Baba Onigbinde would just sits there for 90mins, while his boys playing badly and doing what they like on the pitch.
