As a gentle guy in school, and known by many as such, i tried my utmost best to stay away from trouble.

But there was this mean senior prefect, female. She asked me to leave where i was cleaning up to attend to hers. I tried explaining to her to give me time but she refused. So, she asked me to kneel down at the assembly ground behind the crowd for arguing with her. But something funny happened.

While i knelt down, during assembly, almost 90% of everyone present at the assembly were distracted and kept looking back to see who was actually kneeling down..... me.

Almost everyone that passed by kept asking.....'what did you do?' Who asked you to kneel down? Even her fellow prefects approached me to ask what happened.

She was restless where she was because those prefects approached her too. Even worse, some students hissed out loud when they found out it was her. She eventually asked me to go.

Ever since, when our paths crossed, i gave a straight face whenever she looked at me.

During my junior year in high school my mom hired this other guy who was doing his senior year to walk together with me to school every morning, constantly come to check on me during break time, and to walk me back home after school.

My mom didn't even tell me about the guy until one morning I finished my breakfast and she told that there was someone waiting for me outside.

It was so embarrassing it felt like I had a bodyguard and this guy was not helping matters... During break time he'd come with his friends to the junior class to check on me... My friends would tease me and say that I've got a bodyguard.

Even when he had to stay behind after school to study, he'd make sure to walk me home with his friends and return back to school after making sure that I got home safely.

My home was not even that far from school.

If he couldn't make it to school, he'd ask his friends to fetch me and walk me home after school.

I tried talking to Mom about it and told her that I didn't need the guy keeping an eye on me, but she couldn't take a no for an answer.

I have a senior who is my friend on Facebook. He is now a pastor, any time I see his post, I will recall my terrible experience in secondary. It pains me that he didn't do what he would have done to protect me. I have contemplated blocking him on facebook so I can forget that experience but I find it difficult doing that.

If u attended The International School, University of Ibadan u will be familiar with this:

hoi! Come here! Go and buy me 1 fanta and 1 uncle Tony's meatpie!

Those are the nice ones.

There was this useless guy that will start with:

' hoi come here! Is ur fada a bastard?

Wish I can recall his name, I'd put it here.

By the way, 'hoi' means 'hey'

It got 2 the point dat i told my parent that i am not resuming school the next term, even wen i the sleep i go the dream say that particular senior the chase me 4 dream oo. My eyes see shege 4 daht senior hand.

Several years later we met nd he told me about his life struggles nd i had to talk my dad abt getting him a job. He's now working with the nigeria intelligence agency (NIA).

I didn't have any seniors being from the first batch of students the school had. However, I must insist that kids are wicked. I was silently shunned by the others. Yes they complimented my art and English writing skills, said I was quiet and almost somewhat cute, but I was extremely criticized and abhorred as a freak, an odd person, a weirdo, a funny person, a caricature, kept out of social circles, someone to be tolerated for the sake of tolerance, etc. The teachers were in on it too, I don't want to go on about how they showed it, it would seem like a movie. Only my art and literature teachers really kinda liked me. Today I don't have any close friend amongst them.

And people don't change, after ten years I was added to the classes group chat and nobody wanted to come near. The ones that came close were snobbish and proud as they had been in secondary school. One or two were nice to me though. In summary, the majority only even added me because they were curious about what happened to me after ten years. After that I was distanced and forgotten again.

One lesson here is don't think your low to somehow middle class kid will thrive simply because you put them in a school of the middle class/rich kids. It can work out the right way, but it can also work out the wrong way, like it did for me.

Senior Debo Fawehinmi was one never to forget. He was in SS2 when I was in JS1. He wasn't only wicked, he was a bully.

It was normal to ride junior students Horace, his was way above roof. He will flog us every night claiming someone touched his bed, someone came around his corner, and all unfounded reasons. He comes in after prep and so you hear is "everybody gan bunk i.e. everyone should climb on their bunk" and the flogging starts. Some juniors will promise their provisions, he beats and ensures they redeem their promise which was a double way loss.

He collected my Mathematical Set and US Army bag that was bought for me at the beginning of second term. Whenever we were going home for mid term, I had to wait for him cos I can't go home without the bag and that was the only time the bag was mine.

He would do silly things in conjuction with Senior Shola. For example, carry a junior with his mattress to the courtyard, wrap himself in his bedsheets (white was the compulsory one) and then shout Ghost causing unnecessary scare. One day, he burnt Sola Iluyemi's ass with a lantern and claimed the innocent boy rolled from his bed unto his lantern when we all know every lantern goes off at lights out.

Another incidence was by some other seniors by names: Femi Makinde, Ayinla, and Idris Saliu. Akeem had stolen Paul's money and he was suspected whenever Paul said his money was missing. The way he was eating from Iya Nuts like someone who won a lottery made everyone guess right. As a punishment, a lantern was placed on a chair and he was asked to bow and place his head between the top of the chair and the lantern while stripped off his shirt and pad beaten on the back that way. Couldn't watch that punishment because for me, it was way too much.

For this trio, another of their punishment was the day someone bogeyed by the dining hall. They flogged all juniors form by dorm and room by room except me and another guy. I was exempted because I had a leg unhurt that I couldn't walk by myself and the other guy has leg challenges. They then rolled the Quran by placing a key on a verse, tie the Quran and two juniors will place their hands on the edge of the Key. The key eventually rolled to the room of the culprit. Then they did similar thing with the Bible to get who exactly did. It was the other guy that wasn't beaten. Still he wasn't beaten because everyone felt he wouldn't survive that beating.

I was 14.

Can you believe that she did the same thing when I was doing my first year in varsity?? grin grin grin

She paid this other family friend who was doing her third year to keep an eye on me and make sure that I don't get out of line and she would every now and then report back to my mother... Me and the woman became close and I thought maybe it was because she's a family friend, but nope, she was on duty.. grin grin

I only got to find out about it during the second semester... grin grin grin

Reading this post and the one before this took my mind to Umemulo. I know it's a South African ceremony. I think Zulu people celebrate it. Does your tribe celebrate it?

Is the special protection by your Mum related to the prestige that comes with the ceremony?

From the videos I have watched the parents seem to be very proud that their female children graduate as "good girls" and kill a cow to celebrate it. Something like that.

Not South African but I'm interested in cultures. Pardon me if I'm disturbing you 🌹.
