When I was about to quit my last full-time employment, many years ago, to take the Entrepreneurial plunge; a cousin of mine told me the parable of a monkey, that did not let go of one branch until he held onto another.

I told him about the parable of another monkey, who put his hand into a jar, to take out fruit, but could not bring out his hand, until he unclenched its fist and let go of the fruit.

There is no right or wrong answer, you just need to confirm which of the monkey's you are.

Powerful parables

The best time to quit a job is now since u are beginning to think otherwise.

Or, when u notice u 're not deriving joy from the work

But make sure u save what can sustain u for at least 3 months first if u 're not going immediately into another pay.

I say all that cos over 70% in Nigeria don't work based on career but in search of what to eat per day.
So there is no specialised timing to quiting the disguised unemployment in Nigeria

My people.....have you ever taken a career break?
When is the right time for one to take a career break and is it workable in a society like Nigeria where everything seems hard and most jobs are not easy to come by.,,......

I'm asking because pleasure at work now has become so intense and it's taking other things away from my life..,..that my regular leave days will not suffice.....

But how do I explain that I just walked away?
How I'm sure that I can quickly get something else once ready to return to work?

Would advice will be highly appreciated

I understand your point. The truth is that there will always be work for very skilful people.

Not everyone feels the Rat race is something Normal. And it isn't.

In fact , it's abnormal.

However, ill advise you to endure and get some things settled first.

Things that will make you less desperate to join back and make you take your time to get what is right for you before thinking of getting a job.

Get a significant sum saved.
Get a very cheap accommodation, maybe a farm stead, a place that's not depressing, less chaotic and spiritually refreshing.
Get enough food stock also, at least for a year.
Plan plan plan. If its a 12 months hiatus, plan properly.
You also have to keep your mind spirit soul and body running, maybe by engaging in things like reading, listening to audio books, podcasts, learning a new skill, helping out in a farm stead, prayer, working for God, volunteering, and other interesting stuff.

Its mostly not about leaving but more about how you use the time out.

I am also thinking of that though.

Peace.

I remember when I resigned my job at the bank trying to get into tech.

Saved up some 1m and designed Tshirts for amazon in their merch program.

8 months down.. The 1m had depleted down to less than 100k and the amazon gig wasn't paying that much.

Omoh. I con dey see shege small small....

Luckily for me, before the shege metamorphosed into shege banza, I secured another job with a small financial institution.

Career break!

Save a lot of money. A lot of it. The Nigerian labour market isn't like abroad where you can get jobs easily.

Make sure you have a side hustle or business that can take care of you. Not one one kobo... I mean a side gif that can pay your rent, feed your family and you still have small change left.

Else..... Career break go turn to compulsory early retirement.

Well said.

The street is not smiling. You can only appreciate your job, when you are jobless for 3 months.

You can take a career break if.

1. You have an emergency reserve that can take care of your expenses for 12 months.

2. You have a side hustle, that gives you up to 50% of salary

3. You have been saving all your salary for the past 6 months and above.

4. You get passive income cash flow from rents, dividends etc and the income can take care of your expenses for at least 6 months.

Village people have made a sculptor of you. They have started manipulating the head.

If you take a break, you will break down completely. Don’t try it. Don’t let your village people to rejoice at your downfall. J did it once, I regretted it. Luckily, I am a computer professional, so it was a little not too difficult to get another job, but I am still regretting the break till date. As a matter of fact, I have .......

I don't see any village people here.....I'm not going to wake up and jump into career break...I'm taking all the steps evaluating my current options including possible renegotiation of my job and then whatever happens next, I will be good to go..

A lot of sense here...a lot
So I intend to work on a 3-6months plan of

- Keep evaluating my work environment
- Seek an improvement in terms of pay or assistant or other work options like hybrid
- Get important tools that I will need money for
- Save up
- Keep looking for other side opportunities

My current work is too chooked up and gives me no time to do other things and it's not good for me

To be honest. Depends on the individual entirely. Everytime i took a career break, it's because i needed to update and upgrade my skills.
Merit? Income and Job availability increase.
Demerit? Uncertainty, being broke for a while, leaving comfort zone.

Whatever. Just do you.

Good one

You need to give yourself a 2 year plan.

Money can never be enough, endeavour to live below your means. A minimum of what you earn should be invested for long term

Create multiple streams of passive income. Understand how to make good use of debt for creating more wealth.

Love what you are doing, that is the only way to move higher and get better pay

I was working in a big food company in Nigeria as a Production Supervisor, after 4 years I was getting a burnout, I had to resign when my leave isn't enough to recover, I became recharged after 3 months and I started working as a contract staff in a multinational food company as a Quality Technician. I was feeling lucky already but after a month I was laid off along with other contract staff and it was so promising I was going to be converted to a normal staff, I had to stay back at home than necessary. Fast forward after 3 month again I got an offer in a multinational chemical producing company as a Production Supervisor.

If there is anything I have learnt in my year of work experience

1. Before you respond to a query always sleep over it, in the morning you will find clarity, dont respond outright
2. You have no friends at work
3. Before you resign, have another job waiting, nothing is promised.
4. Its depressing being jobless in Nigeria.
5. Contract job is no job in Nigeria

I hope you picked one or two things here

Nice advice.

I believe the goal should rather be to retire after 10 to 20 years of active service. It is useless to break for 2 years only to resume working again.

The right thing is to invest wisely to create Cashflow anf reinvest the profits so as to compound it over 10 years. Then one can retire and live off the Cashflow.

I think one needs to consider their mental health as well and if you're at that stage, then a break for few months won't be bad for yourself

You are still repeating the word " career "

It doesn't exist oga!

Just do what will serve humans and get some money

Education is mainly for exposure and higher reasoning ability

Lol... you make it look like doing what serves human and having a career are mutually exclusive. Career is just an English word for the dedication you give to a specific thing that serves human. It's not even about education. It's about dedication to a domain. Just like some people are passionate about football, some people have spent their lives advancing in a specific domain, sharpening thier skills, contributing to the domain and making both a name and money for themselves while at it. When such a person comes online to ask questions like the OP, it is for like-minded people to answer.

In this part of the world people always advise you leave and jump into another job immediately not necessarily taking a break and this is coming from purely economic reasons
