What is your council tax band and which local authority? You can check online to see what your tax should be.

Tax rates are set based on the council tax band for your property. They range from A to H, A being the cheapest at approx £1,156 pa

Looks like your property is rated band C or D

Check your council tax band here:

Ok, use the link above from Zahra29 to check what your council tax should be. Different properties will have different tax bands. Generally speaking the bigger the property, the higher the council tax.

Not really, council tax bands can be so random that sometimes you question how they arrived at it.

When I was living in a terrace house my house number is 9 and my council tax band was B while my neighbour in number 8 was on band A, the same house size. The excuse my landlady gave then was that my house is end-of-terrace.

One point people seem to be missing in all this international student discussion is that regardless of your status today, so long you came in with a visa, you are not different from the international students the government and its fans are portraying as opportunists and leeches.

If you came via a family visa, you must have switched your status from dependent of ILR holder or British citizen before you have your permanent residence, and maybe to citizenship later.

If you came on a work visa, you must have done the same.

If you came as a refugee, you must have claimed asylum and then have your application granted before you had your stay.

So, does that make you entitled, leeches, a burden to the system, an opportunist?

The same thing most settled migrants in the UK did is what international students are doing today.

They came with a student visa, applied for PSW and were granted because the govt deemed them qualified, and if they feel like switching to a Skilled Worker visa thereafter, and then to ILR much after, it is still all the same process followed by every migrant today.

So, it is unfair making it look like they are migrating through the backdoor. The only people who might deserve to be vilified are those staying illegally.

So, where is this narrative of "they are trying to stay indefinitely comes from"?

I agree that the government has to do what they think is the best for their country, but they can do it without stigmatizing those who committed absolutely no offence.

Immigrant vs. non immigrant visa

Okay I think I can give you first class info about this. Jobs are very scarce for students now, in North East generally. My advice is for your guy to come only with his partner, especially if they're banking on weekly wages to pay bills and tuition fee balance.

End terraced houses are usually valued higher than mid terraced properties though because of the absence of neighbours on the other side and also larger gardens. This could be the reason for the higher council tax band.

Again, no one is castigating international students. The government has gone to great lengths to highlight the positive contribution students make to the country.

It was the unsustainable number of dependents that became an issue (which most universities admitted to)

It depends on the angle it's being viewed from. You may see it differently, but personally, I think it's wrong and sounds 'castigating' to say people are using the student route to migrate through the backdoor. This is the narrative being pushed by the Suella Braverman-led HO and it's being bought by many people.

If you don't have an ILR and no recourse to public fund, you probably should not pay council tax. It's worth checking as many dont know this

True bro. You get a refund if you challenge most councils.

I am afraid to say more before someone takes it to youtube and make a public debate of new immigrants not paying council tax.

The exemption you are alluding to only applies to Students and their dependants which is something that has been raised severally on this thread. I think the OP is on a work visa so won’t qualify for the exemption but thanks for pointing that out.

On the issue of council tax, for those that have successfully switched from tier 4 to tier 2 visa, please remember to inform your local authority so they can issue a revised Council Tax bill. You might think they won’t know but trust me they are monitoring everything and will send you the revised bill in due course.

Same advice for those that initially benefited from the single person discount but whose partners and children have now joined them. You have a duty to inform the Council when there is a change in your circumstances. If you don’t inform them, they will soon find out and send you your arrears.

Racist undertones?

A majorly white country would be more amenable to fellow white/Arab immigrants than black ones from Africa.

We shouldn't rule this out.

The UK is Afraid...they are not thinking about today but tomorrow. Nigerians are taken up everywhere... Most of these masters student and their dependents are highly skilled. Most Nigerians start out at the lower end of the food chain but in few years, we are always at the upper end.

Have you visited the hospitals, schools, banks, football academy, even the IT sector that we thought Indians were the King, Nigerians are occupying lots of position gradually. Most masters degree classes are now filled up with Nigerians.

I may be wrong but if you're observing this from the other side of the coin, it's possible. The UK works on data, the effect of 686% increase in the number of student visa applications from Nigeria is alarming. If these continues over the years, which we all know it will, then a naija kid born and raised by an immigrant family may as well be contesting for the PM in 200-300years from now.

The UK can take in 200k refugees but they can't withstand seeing their educational institutions filled up with Nigerians...This is not about the pressure on the system..

I saw some comments earlier about the pressure on NHS, my spouse and I paid around £8k for IHS, I never got sick once before leaving the UK. 100k refugees did not not pay £1 for IHS and yet it is the students that are putting pressure on the system.

Like I said the UK is AFRAID, but of what?

don't mind them and it's pretty annoying seeing Nigerian apologists who keep pushing stupid narratives like this, is the student route not more dignifying than those coming via boats through the channel?

Shut your borders to all if you don't want people to come instead of whining about challenges that can easily be fixed if the funds from these visas have not been adequately utilised. It's never the problem of the immigrants; never. This hit-and-run system of the Brits is too primitive for a so-called first-world nation. It doesn't make sense. Population in any nation of opportunities will increase as people will naturally gravitate towards it. If you don't want immigrants, then shut your borders and stop complaining of skill shortages, it's that simple

Its all nonsense like i said before, let me make this clear just in case anybody misunderstood my stand on this..

I'm not against any govt controlling immigration and making sure that the system is not abused. That said... These politicians are worst than people smugglers, no shame, just about the money.

These Nigerians who are on the news for all wrong reasons did not commit any crime, they followed law to the end. They paid for every resource they are using.

Last year the UK govt allowed 163,500 Ukraines to move to the UK and provided accommodation and jobs for them all paid for by tax payers.

In 2021 they allowed 21,387 people from Afghanistan to move here to settle all paid for by tax payer

Ukraines and Afghans did not pay a penny into the system but Nigerians who paid their way here are being humanised .

They should change the immigration law quietly without blaming Nigerians for their incompetence and greediness

We are unnecessarily being profiled and it's all wrong, when I knew It was all a joke was when Student visa processing last year was delayed for more attention to be paid to the Ukrainian refugees as in those bringing money into the country were being held back for those bringing nothing, chai we don suffer

@Goke7 I usually agree with you on most subjects but this is a bit harsh! People that are escaping a war zone through no fault of theirs should not be prioritised? Haba!

no apologies for being harsh, we are also being treated too harshly, humanity should be applied to all. Hope you were also aware that Nigerians escaping that war were also held back from leaving the same war zone

Milk type no matter.
The most important is the milk to change the taste of the kolaq cause it is bitter(Agbo). And so that it can form a perfect smoothie and you can drink it in her presence without you questioned about the buildingproject you wan start. 😂🤣🤣😂
